Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Never understood the obsession with Torts.

He holds players accountable and is a disciplinarian, which this team desperately needs, but he also manages to alienate or run out of town most of his teams talented players and is extremely hit or miss with younger players.

He is not exactly some huge winner either, guys won 4 playoff series in 20 years since he won the cup with Tampa.
So what you are saying is he’s the Chris Drury of coaches.

I might be misremembering, but a lot of people here disliked Sullivan when he was here as assistant.

To be fair to Sully, is there an assistant coach we had that is remembered fondly? I mean Scott Arniel is about to win the President's Trophy with Winnipeg and I remember nothing but complaints about him.

Kreider couldve used more time early in his career with Torts imo. Would've benefitted him long term.

Assuming he didn't run Kreider out of town, which he probably would have.

Considering how he felt about them, its a small miracle that we didn't trade Zuccarello and Kreider for talentless grinders.

What Rangers did Torts run out of town besides Gaborik?

Holy shit I just saw Bob McKenzie, yelled out the window and asked him about Torts, he said Rangers are hiring him

He's the foundation for the coach that's gonna win after him.

How has that foundation worked out for Vancouver and Columbus?

Those teams were both disasters after he left. Canucks made the playoffs once the next 5 years and won zero playoff rounds. Blue Jackets have missed the playoffs the last 4 years.

As I said in another post he laid the foundation for the players that survived his tenure but we got very lucky we had talented depth about to step into prominent roles. Its a small miracle Slats didnt trade Kreider and Zuccarello for nonsense because Torts had no idea what to do with them. How the f**k do you not know what to do with those two?

Trevor Zegras makes $5.75m next year, he has 24 points in 46 games this year. There have been rumors for a while that he is unhappy in Anaheim. The Rangers could use a center. His next contract could be one, if he struggles again, where he could make life miserable for the GM. Push for a QO and take the pay bump. If he struggles next year and is unhappy with his role, he could almost force his way out.

He's a young player that I could see taking a flier on. Play him at center which is where he is more comfortable and develop him. Miller, Zegras, Trochek down the middle.

There's already a spot for Gabe. he should start in Hartford anyway. Trade Kreider. Use picks to add Rossi. There's not point to trading laf to get him. I'd want them playing together.
We’ve been saying trade Kreider for how long? This has proved to be easier said than done.

What talented player did we have on those teams besides Gaborik? He was literally the only skilled guy we had.

I guess he ran Dubinsky out of town (technically he ran him out of 2 towns) though he wasn't super talented despite leading the team in points in 10-11.

Zegras is a CINO at this point a la Stamkos and Pavelski.

I'd rather put Zibanejad back down the middle.

Dubinsky had his best years under Torts at 2 different locations. He also retired a Blue Jacker due to injury. And if Gabby was the only skill guy we had, Torts did an awesome job as Rangers coach.

Jacques Martin was well liked, though probably because he was only here for 1 year. Any longer and people would have started hating him, I'm sure.

Zucc played most of one year in the KHL because Torts wouldn't give him more rope in the NHL. When his KHL season was done, he played the final 15 games of the 2012-13 season and then 12 games in the playoffs. After that, Torts got fired and Zucc was on the team full time.

Kreider was another frequent target of his. He didn't get run out of town, though, and Zucc came back. Still, it's Torts' MO. He always has young guys he doesn't like and often does run them out of town. We saw it happen in Philly with Frost and Farabee.

If Drury is dumb enough to hire Torts, I guarantee Laf will immediately be in his doghouse. Maybe he should be for the way he has played, but Torts will ride him like he has done with other young players. Meanwhile, he won't say boo about Mika. Maybe he'll call out Kreider, if he's still around, because he still holds a grudge.
