I hadn't really bothered the past few seasons to deep delve into the draft / top 10 prospects and the like, mainly due to the fact of there being no chance or likelihood of us picking there. Had certainly heard of Gabe and was amazed when he fell far enough to draft.

Going into this season I expected the same pattern to follow on again and cannot believe I am asking this question. Should I now be starting to look into 2025s draft, or is Drury going to be trading away first rounders like Sather on acid in an attempt to save the season?

Dreary should give Mika ownership of a Colony Grill location if he agrees to waive his NMC go to Vancouver for JT. Mika and Petey can both smell their own farts together. Everybody wins.

We don’t know. Drury hasn’t aggressively moved firsts most of his career.
However it does depend on how big a leash Dolan gave him.
If we’re a lotto team and we move several big contracts with retention for next year (thus tanking that year too) if Drury doesn’t survive that, he won’t pull that trigger even if he should.

How many locations are there? Serious question

When I look at teams that are in a playoff position or in playoff contention, I get a very short list of VAN, LA, UHC, and CAL.

Here are some goofy trade ideas
(NYR) Kreider + Lindgren for (LA) Turcotte + Greentree + draft pick(s)
  • there are obviously better players on the Kings roster I'd want to target but I think it'd be very far fetched to land those premium targets unless we are getting into even more far fetched Shesterkin proposals.
(NYR) Miller for (UHC) Lamoureux + draft pick(s)
  • I considered Simashev too but no idea when he comes over so without getting a roster player in such a deal, I think it's highly unlikely to make that type of move. Yotes also took Simashev over Michkov so they must be super high on him. Doubtful they'd part with him.
I think we're stuck with Mika. Lavi really should be scratching/benching him until he asks for a trade. And then even then, I think we get bent over to dump him. He'd control the destination and I could see us retaining salary (max of $4.25M for this season and 5 more remaining years). Maybe Drury can get someone to actually pay for a 1/2 price Mika. If you can convince the other GM that he's just under some bad MSG Mojo and they convince themselves they can rejuvinate his career, then maybe something comes of it. But too many factors so I can't imagine anything remotely feasible. Even by fantasy HF standards.

Vesey, Smith, Carrick, Ruhwedel, Borgen. See if we flip them for low round picks that we can maybe use to move up in the draft.

next season, go light, go young (maybe that's where the realism departs the post for wishful thinking)

Panarin-Trocheck-Perrault
Cuylle-Bennett (ufa)-Lafreniere
Berard-Sykora-Othmann
Edstrom-Zibanejad-Rempe

Schneider-Fox
Jones-Lamoureux
Vaakanainen-Mancini

sign McDavid the next summer. Possibly but improbably trade Panarin for Silayev+ or Bichsel+ to replace Vaak. Obviously would love if Mika could get flipped for JTM in some way but see above - that's unlikely. Use draft capital to either get long term improvements to the blueline or for getting some rentals to push in future seasons with a young core.

He's pretty much left the pick cupboard short apart from those firsts you're right, although, this is rapidly going South and depending where we are by the deadline, I think he's going to do something stupid.

The team flatlined several weeks ago. Once in a while they win a game but there's been no real revival. I don't think any one or two players that we might potentially trade for is going to change that. They might help in the future but what's been going on this year has been a team thing. I could be wrong but I do not think it likely we make the postseason. The schedule only gets harder the rest of the way and IMO this collapse is real for this season anyway.

2025 doesn't look like the greatest draft but the way the team is playing there's a chance our pick will be top 10. I don't see Drury trading our 1st rounder for a roster player. I think a far greater likelihood is Drury moves more of our roster players and Kreider might be next because he's a player that teams going into the playoffs should want and his contract is not that steep and he has two years left after this. If you think you can get 2/3 playoff runs out of a player who has good playoff numbers then you're going to look at him as a big pickup.

Drury did not get a big enough return for Kakko IMO. He needs to do better if he does move Chris. Mika has been shit all year but he's going to be much tougher to move. Lindgren, Borgen, Smith, Quick are all on expiring contracts. All but Borgen have extensive playoff experience. Quick though is a backup at this point in his career and if a team already has a good backup then he's not a need. The other guys should get interest.

I think the next 10 games will determine that. It’s a brutal schedule, and if they don’t go at least .500 the rest of the season is going to be really difficult to salvage.
