I know we can't keep harping on about it it, but not getting a game breaking talent with #1OA pick, plus barely getting an average NHLer out of picks 2, 7 and 9 really hurts anything you are trying to build
I won't give this team that credit. They bungled their top picks, tried to re-write the book on how to develop 18 y/o blue chippers in the NHL and they went 0 for 2.

Kakko is a lost cause, but Laf is good. Rangers need to build around him and get a center with some size. Maybe Cozens. Laffy was breaking games open in the playoffs

He's a very good player (as you'd expect for the first pick), and should still get better, but I wouldn't classify him as a game breaker. IMO he hasn't yet shown he can do it with any regularity, and without a guy like Panarin

Who would come back?

Knowing Drury, probably a 7th rounder.

But IDK. We would need to add for Rossi. Maybe their first rounder for Kakko?

I'd love to pry Khusnutdinov out of there but probably not realistic even if he's buried.

If I had to guess probably something dumb like Stramel.

No way Drury gets a Russian

Land of no calls..
This team needs some semblance of a plan

Bad news is there's not a lot of intriguing pieces they could swap him for that would help right away. Good news is Minny has a phenomenal prospect pool so maybe Guerin does something silly.

He also seems to inexplicably dislike Marco Rossi. Though I'd wager that's just posturing to keep the new contract down.

Trade before, during or after that stretch?
You get most value at TDL as more teams can bid. Id wait until then. Throw the towel in on the season and move whoever you can for solid assets at TDL. Mainly Smith, Lindgren and probably kakko. Then hockey trades with kreids and kandre after the cup prior to free agency

When it comes to trade, Guerin simply doesn't do dumb trades. He literally only gave up a 1st for David J because he's a long term pieces. He has never traded any top top Prospect. Rossi is also a 1c on a contending team

Rangers get Cole Sillinger
Bluejackets get Kaapo Kakko

Rangers get center depth
Bluejackets get wing depth

Swaping over former 1st round picks that has not planned out yet

Fair deal?? Fills a need for both teams.

They had a shot at Stutzle but chose KK

They were drafted in different years. Stutzle went 3rd after Laffy.

At the time we wanted 3 & 5 or 3 & Tkachuk, was the rumor. Imagine getting an offer where Stutzle, Tkachuk or even Sanderson was only part of the return for Laffy now? Franchise is genuinely cursed. Makes you wonder what someone did to deserve this.
