The defense needs a ton of work and they still need another good center. Drury thinks he's in the NBA where every position is wing.

If we can get a guy who's conceivably really good in a couple of years, like a Perreault, it fits the timeline.

They don't have a lot of actual valuable assets when it comes to bringing a top player back, so it's going to take a little luck to hit it out of the ball park with the trades they do make. This isn't the offseason to pound your chest going into free agency with top forwards unless the top 2 make it to July unsigned with their current club.. There's some players coming up in 2026 that you can try to target before free agency, but I don't know that we have the right pieces to make those trades. So I think it will require some luck.

From a defense standpoint, you have some options with players who are going to want term, but for them to not be the new whipping boy, I think it's going to take more than just grabbing a defensemen with a decent rep.

I think they need to use their cap space to add some veteran defensemen. Fox, Miller, Schneider, Mancini are salvageable if paired with the right partners. I think the bottom 6 will be set with homegrown guys coming up. Cuylle, Edstrom, Berard, Othmann soon, Laba/Chmelar/Sykora on the horizon. Perrault should slot into the top 6 next year. Theyll be saving money there.

Kakko+Jones to PIT for Pettersson (extention candidate)

Probably being optimistic on the trades but they really need to move out kreider and Trocheck before its too late for depth. let the kids who have earned it be the top 6 players. Greenway, Rempe, Othmann make the bottom 6 much harder to play against fro opposing teams. My hope would be that their style forces Mika to waive or helps him re-learn hockey again.

You simply cannot bench Kakko given his play this year compared to others (ahem ahem Mika, Kreider). I know Kakko hasn't been great over the past 10 games, but he's still not actively hurting us like Mika, Kreider, Lindgren, etc.

The reason I like Provorov is it extends the lineup with guys who can make offensive plays on the back end. Fox, Provorov, Jones. Pair them with younger, less expensive defensive d-men. They have Schneider and Mancini. Go get a veteran LD to play with Fox and PK.

I’d trade Miller for something for sure and just sign Provorov as a UFA this offseason. He’s not re-signing in Columbus and I doubt he signs where he is traded at the deadline

I know it won’t happen and I know most of you are against it, but guys like Fox and Shesterkin before their trade protections kick in are prime guys with term who would return the actual types of pieces we want. I am fine with something like a UPL/Quick/Garand platoon for a year or two to assess what we have with Garand without rushing him. Fox and Shesterkin are the kinds of guys that return a Kent Johnson or Adam Fantili or Mason McTavish. Not 1 for 1, but there’s nothing this team needs more than a legit young 1C. You get something like McTavish + Zellweger + for Fox and something like UPL + Power + Quinn for Shesterkin (examples, probably bad ones) and then you’ve got:

McTavish, Lafreniere, Cuylle, Chytil, Quinn, Kakko, Berard, Perrault, Edstrom, Otthman, Sykora up front without even considering any of the vets - some of who get moved for other new players. On the back end Power, Miller, Zellweger, Schneider, Mancini. You move Kreider for another D, maybe a bit more established. Roll Trochek as the veteran center among the kids. Keep Panarin or convince him to waive to a contender, retain and get another good asset. Like Rossi + Hartman from Minnesota; they’re contending this year and I’m sure Bread and Kaprizov would like playing together. Get Zib to waive or move him to wing.

Again, those are probably very shitty, very hastily thought up trade targets. The point is, these assets could bring us a ton if we move on now. We can see Fox slowing a bit - we watch him daily - other teams won’t be on to that yet and will still pay through the nose. Same with Shesty. He turns 30 three months into his extension. Let some other team pay him 11.5M when he’s 34-38 years old. Move these guys while the value is at its peak, not after it has been eroded by another year or two of shit results.

Hell yeah, we can. I mean we royally f***ed up the "rebuild". This season took a big ass ugly ass turn, it feels beyond lost. HYNYR couldn't get more cynical than it is now. Tank this mother.

I like the idea of Cozens. He was really good two years ago and then Sorbos pls took effect.

The following year, I probably let Greenway walk to make sure I have the space to do a thing we talked about, and then we do another thing we talked about.

Would be the level of ballsy we have yet to see Drury willing to go to. His MO has been bandaids.

The #1 thing this team needs right now is more defenseman and any defenseman that comes in for Fox is a downgrade. It just doesn't make any sense to trade Fox.

He's a UFA, so there would have to be some agreement here in place. And are you comfortable giving out 6/7 years? Do you feel he earned a pay raise or are you going to try and get that cap closer to 6? I don't think his play has lived up to his last contract and at times looked like a cap dump, so I'd hesitate to give him term.
