It really feels like the only game they're playing is chicken. Do the players go or does the staff go?

The East is so mid that they could stili potentially sneak in as a 2nd wild card I guess.

and then likely ejected in the 1st round quickly

If Larry is to be trusted, I think a player or two will be moved before any coaches. And if that doesn’t galvanize them (I can’t imagine it will), the move will be firing Housley. Lavi will be further down the road imo. Drury has seemingly clashed with the players at times, but there’s been nothing to suggest he’s at odds with Lavi. I guess time and player performance will be the deciding factor.

The problem with this sequence is, as others have pointed out, the guys who would be the easiest to trade would be bad “fall” guys. Like you’re not sending a message by trading kakko. Or even lindgren. With Lindgren, you might even be sending the wrong message about work ethic —he’s just not good. Kreider is probably the move.

The East is worse now than during the Hawks/Kings era. Back then, those two teams were the best, but it was just those teams. The Rangers and Bruins still would have done damage in the West.

Now, every playoff team in the West would be near the top of the East. The talent disparity between conferences is crazy.

The West has a bunch of teams that did solid re-tools. The East has a bunch of unserious teams hanging onto rosters that were either cooked or proven losers years ago.

Can you elaborate?

Drury is such a coward.

EF reported the Rangers are open for business on HNIC. They are willing to listen. They have a few untouchables. They are willing to consider all options and any ideas out there.

Chris Kreider was dropped to the 4th line in the 3rd period. His game has fallen apart. He looks miserable.

The Rangers played their best hockey on the PK.

The NHL roster freeze is December 20-27. Drury should trade someone right before Christmas and these players will go out on strike.

Nah I think Ottawa will beat them out. Rangers are done.

Open for business fine but trying to salvage this season is something I don’t want Drury to be in command of. Trade for futures.

Elliotte needs to pay more attention to the game. Kreider was playing with the 4th line because his other two linemates were straight up benched.

I hate to say it, but the next move is to trade Kreider.

Moving one of the younger players won't carry the same message. K'Andre would net more in trade, but we literally don't have a replacement ready. He's our only potential top 4 LD. Trading Kakko doesn't send any kind of message. Blaming Kakko is like killing Jean Grey. It's been done so many times that the shock value is gone. Zib is (IMO) the biggest problem on the roster, but he is nigh untradeable with his contract, and we have no way to replace him, either in the system or via FA.

What's left? Trading Lindgren would send a message, but not a big one. I still think he gets moved if the team is out of the playoffs at the trade deadline, as I don't see them bringing him back. Then you have Kreider. Longest tenured Ranger. Plays the deepest position on the team in terms of vets, young roster players, AND pipeline (let's be real--with Laf, Panarin, Cuylle, Kakko, Perrault in the mix, Kreider shouldn't be playing top six or top PP). He'd be a shot across the bow of his buddy Zinanejad. His production has dried up, but his reputation and post-season play would still bring back value in a trade. It's the logical next move.

If the coach still needs to be changed after that, so be it, but then the remaining players know--if they try to torpedo the NEXT coach, they might be tossed first.

the more i think about it, i think it's the coach and the coaching staff. they have this team playing a system that doesn't work with the personnel on the roster. Washington players had the same complaint with Laviolette. i wouldn't even blame the players either because i knew when we hired him that 'Lavi' (and especially Housley) was a schmuck and that this would happen, it just happened a little bit faster than i imagined.

If this were an isolated incident, I'd say sure. But there are two things the have me side-eye-ing the players more than the coaching staff right now:

1- For some of the members of this core (Kreider, Zibanejad, Trouba before he was moved), this will be the 3rd or 4th coach that "didn't work" with them (AV, Quinn, GG, and Lavi). That would be an average lifespan of just over 2 seasons per coach in the last decade and change.

2- The roster is largely the same as it was last season, when this same coaching staff and same system and same players won the President's Trophy. The whole roster didn't forget how to play hockey. They are pouting. About the coaches. Again.

Again, if the coach needs to be changed after this? Fine. But after piling up several coach carcasses to placate this core, the next step is to cull the locker room a bit and usher in a younger leadership group.

I don't think a coach could fix this team but it is annoying how well the Caps are playing under Carbery. Their roster isn't good.
