One of the big factors in looking for trade partners is understanding which teams are in win now mode. GMs on the hot seat etc. Edmonton and Calgary definitely fall in that category. Columbus, Florida and Dallas are maybes. San Jose and Los Angeles are not. When you are looking for dance partners, the teams in the win now (or else) mode constitute the teams most likely to use futures to pay for now performance. Some teams can simply not afford to keep missing the playoffs.

Another potential trade sets are teams with a glaring need. Who needs a veteran top 6 player who can compliment the to your current roster? That opens up another list of possible MZA destinations. As Tim Russert would say; “Florida, Florida, Florida”.

We heard they want a 1st, a prospect and an NHL-ready player for Zuccarello, that's how valuable he is to the Rangers. But I doubt any other team will accept such a high price, so that's one of the reasons why he probably stays here.

It’s all in the definition and the perception. The Bruins traded a low first (that they expected to be even lower) a roster player they deemed expendable (Spooner) and a prospect that the Rangers apparently like more than they did for Nash. The Rangers also took back a bad contract and 50% of Nash’s $. An MZA deal could end up looking like this.

I think we have a pretty good opportunity to play 'garbageman' for the rest of the league and try to move in to the top-5. I'd see what Carolina is thinking about that 2OA and Darling right now. Would throw Pesce into that return, too, but that's getting out of hand and way into NHL 18 territory.

Montreal and half their team
Bobby Ryan and the 4OA
How much does Chayka value aging curves and what does he think of Goligoski right now? He had a rough year on the shot-attempt metrics side. Could we eat the Goli contract and get the 5OA without giving up 9? Doubtful, and at what cost do you move up 4 picks?

Would put all energy into talking to Carolina about the 2OA and walking out of this draft with Svechnikov.

Let's take out the trash

Goligoski is 32. Can't add him even as a cap dump. It'll drive up the teams average age. And he'll block [insert random prospect that's not considered top tier outside of the NYR organization here] from getting ice time.

Extra 5M seems perfect time to go add JT and Kovalchuk,

What’s a podcast?

No I didn’t listen to it lol, which is why I asked.

Neither did I, nor do I care.

I know teams made offers for Zucc, but Gorts was too busy dealing McD and Miller at the deadline so the deal didnt go through.

It was a little bit of mismanagement on their part to not have their assigned values scored out where they couldn't make two deals at once, but hopefully Gorts learns from this and has his prices sort out in advance where he misses an opportunity due to his focus being diverted.

That would be a good exercise for the Rangers brass. To have their values assigned out prior to a prime transactional period. If he doesn't get his shit together when it comes to this next year, then the leash should get considerably shorter.

Well this is all incorrect, so you don't have to worry about Gorton messing up deals. Two teams were interested in Zuccarello, but things didn't go very far because Rangers asking was too high. Again...listen to the podcast, this journalist is very well informed.

If the cap does indeed go up to $80MM next season, Rangers would have about $30MM in cap space with 6 forwards (Zbad, Zucc, Kreider, Fast, Buch and Belesky) 4 defensemen (Shattenkirk, Staal, Smith and Pionk) and 1 goalie (Lundqvist).

Would like to see:
  • Hayes get $4.5 for 5 years.
  • Skjei $5 for 7 years.
  • Names $4 for 3 years.
  • Vesey $3 for 4 years.
  • Spooner $3.5 for 2 years.
$18MM right there. Leaves the Rangers with $12MM in space with 10 F, 5 D and 1 G. Need 5 or 6 more players plus operating room for callups.

Some will be cheap ELC deals like Chytil and Andersson (or the like). Rangers could also free up additional space by trading Zucc and burying Beleskey.

I don’t think Skjei gets more than 6 years

And there’s almost zero chance Vesey’s next deal isn’t a bridge contract

This is all assumptions. No one knows for sure that Gorton didn’t trade Zucc because he was tied up with the McD trade. Why is this constantly repeated on this site as if it were fact?

At 15 we can get Bokk or Kaut
90% chance they will both be as good as zuc in the future with a higher ceiling
No brainer.. You trade zuc now
At 15 we trade up a little to secure Farabee. Philly will take him if we don’t move up

And, in fact, if the best offer the Rangers received for Zuccarello had not come in the 11th hour, while GM Jeff Gorton was completely immersed in getting the Ryan McDonagh-J.T. Miller blockbuster completed, Zuccarello might have been gone then.

There are no guarantees that Zuccarello, headed into the final year of his contract with a reasonable $4.5 million cap hit, will still be a Ranger after the June draft, by the time training camp rolls around (he’ll be 31 then), or by the next trade deadline.

Rangers offseason player evaluations: Mats Zuccarello

The McDonagh trade was made with one minute to spare.

If best offer for Zuccarello came in at the same time, how were the Rangers possibly making two big trades at the same time?

Source? Probably not. I highly doubt that Gorton is discussing possible trades with the media.

No source but I recall him saying that too. I think quite a few people here do.

I’ll leave it to one of those podcast listening youngsters to procure the evidence you’ve requested.

I’m 90% sure they can find it.

Honest question: is Gorton the only one allowed to call in a trade to the NHL registry? Could Drury have done it? I know bobbop said that we had something close with Calgary, but it couldn't materialize in time.

Oh a writer said this, not Gorton. I see...

The only guy I believe in is the journalist who talks to Zuccarello and his agent like they are friends.
