My point before was not about him, it was more about if the Rangers came right out and said forget Kovalchuk, perhaps he is in the ears of those two prospects.
Put yourself in their skates, kids thinking about leaving something comfortable where they'd get raises versus all the unknown if they did come over. Having Kovalchuk saying stuff one way or the other could influence their ideas.
If they think giving Kovalchuk a one year deal with bonuses helps bring them over, I could see that. If he is good they can give him another year or he can find another NHL deal elsewhere. But more so if that goalie and defender come over and are in the the system, partially because of maybe Kovalchuk, maybe Namestnikov too, if that somehow also helps Buch, Georgiev that is value beyond.
