I've been an nhl fan for Bettman's entire tenure. My guess is he is coming down hard on melynk behind the scenes. Gary has done alot of campaigning in Ottawa to bring an arena downtown. He doesn't like his owners being this abrasive in public, especially towards his own fans.

But Gary operates behind closed doors. He won't spank melynk in public. I don't think he rigs every lottery and it won't be in favor of this team after these antics.
I don't think he does either. I'm really just having some fun in this thread... until Ottawa actually wins the lottery. ;)

I'd keep Spooner.

Didn't the NHL still own them (kind of) at the time Matthews was drafted? That would just be too much of a coincidence.
Even then, if it was rigged for certain situation Edmonton wouldn’t have gotten 4 #1’s including McDavid, and in the McDaivd year Arizona would’ve at least gotten Eichel

Hear me out here. For next season we play as many kids as we can. Get all our young D 60 games apiece. Get all our young forwards 60 games a piece. All on a rotating basis. See who has chemistry with whom. See which kids have what it takes. Keep our Vets (Kreider, Zucc, Fast, Shatty, Skjei) in the lineup as much as possible. Play hank at most 50 games saving him for the next season.

I know we are in a rebuild, but sign 2 old successful vets to 1 or at most 2 year contracts, to serve as role models/captains to mentor the rookies. (Think Brad Richards types. Not Kovalchuk types).

What veterans will be UFA that fit this bill?

No.

Besides, Zuccarello is the one getting dealt. He was being discussed at the trade deadline.

I’m in favor of turning this thing around as quickly as possible while having a deep farm for sustainable success. Ok, here goes: we trade Zuc for assets, keep Staal and Smith around (I know, I know), sign JVR for approx 4x$6 and Carlson for 6x$7.

Kreider Zibs Buch
JVR Chytil Naz
Andersson Spooner Hayes
Vesey Lettieri Fast
Nieves/Holland

Skjei Carlson
Staal/Smith/Pionk Shatty
Staal/Smith/Pionk ADA
Ogara, Bigras, Sproul, Gilmour
Doesn’t take into account Rykov, Bear gloves which could push out Staal or Smith

This is a competitive playoff team if guys perform. This draft on top of Hajek, Horton, etc will give us great prospect depth. Long term we phase out Staal and Smith, Hank for Shesty, upgrade some Fs, and I think we have something.

Maybe we win the 2nd or 3rd pick but I do believe it has already been determined that Ottawa gets the #1.

That team is struggling in many ways. Attendance. Ownership. Management. Similar to Pittsburgh in 2004. I wouldn't be surprised if talk of Ottawa moving started soon. It is really bad up there. Give them Dahlin to save the day.

The suckiest of suck things to happen in this draft would be if BOTH of the Islanders picks ended up being lottery picks.

Actually, that is what will happen. Ottawa will get #1 overall to help keep that franchise going a bit longer. Islanders will get picks 2 & 3. Tavares stays on the Island. They stay competitive. Next year Arizona gets Jack Hughes after OEL leaves. The circle of NHL life continues. The Rangers get hosed.

I don't understand why this would be the NHL's garbage plan to fix the league.

If anything they should let teams like Arizona and Ottawa fester and build up the Rangers. The Rangers are the team that wins ratings and viewership for the league.

How would you guys feel about a trade with Calgary revolving around a Zucc for Bennett +?
Bennett seems like a young player that still has alot of untapped potential and a change of scenery could do wonders for him.

Spooner is better on wing, and Hayes is better at center. Lettieri shows no ability to be center, and shouldn’t be there over Nieves.

I think you're on crack but part-time. Kreider likely wouldn't get Puuljujarvi alone from what little I know. AND their first (NY's may be higher)? 2nd in 2019 for Vesey would be possible but moderately improbable. Talking like a 16% chance, I DID the math.

Spooner won't get a second AND a legit prospect. Closer though.

Staal for a 2nd?! Moulson was a good Islander, what, 5 years ago, right

Martin, another ex-Isle, ok... for rights to Tambellini??? OK, so they can re-sign him still...

Pretty good up front... defense is a thin hunk of butter... no offense to those guys. If they start the season like that, defense will be six rotating doors in a row... like a fu1nhouse. Re-building necessitates some stability.

I’d rather get prospects/picks for Zuccarello. I’m not a fan of the reclamation project trades because they almost never work out

The only two legit NHL defensemen from that entire group are Shattenkirk and Skjei. I think DeAngelo and Pionk will get there but the Rangers are going to bring in a couple vets to fill out their D or at least keep Staal around. Something tells me Brendan Smith is never going to wear a New York Rangers jersey again in an NHL game--he might wear one to the local mall but that's it. When you see guys that were staples of the team going out the door like McDonagh who does train hard and prepares himself every season for training camp and look at Smith how his season went and you see that the Rangers are serious about remaking the team it don't bode well for Mr. Smith. I can understand giving someone a second chance---I look at what just went down a couple days ago though and I just don't see Brendan getting a second chance. IMO if the Rangers can't find a taker and I don't think they will he's going to get his contract bought out.

I don't think Edmonton trades their 1st for Kreider if they're in the top 7 or 8 teams in the league and I don't see them adding Puljujarvi if they do. IMO the Ranger are keeping Chris anyway, they're keeping Hayes, Zibanejad, Buchnevich and Namestnikov. I suspect Chytil and Andersson will play with the Rangers next year but I'm not sure either will be going back and forth from Hartford to New York. I expect as well that the Rangers are going to sign free agent forwards--maybe not the best and for huge deals but not the worst either. I don't see your team above as all that plausible. The Rangers are going to want to ice a much more competitive team next year. That's in their DNA and in the DNA of the fanbase. Despite very few Stanley Cups it's a proud original 6 franchise ranked as Forbes most valuable NHL franchise. I don't think we're going to the playoffs for two or three seasons but the shit that we're seeing now as we free fall is going to stop. We'll be a younger, meaner, hungrier team next year but it's not going to be left devoid of leadership to wallow at the bottom of the league standings. We'll need to grow a bit before we can get back to the playoffs though.

They’ll wade redden his ass before they buy him out. He should start looking for a residence in Hartford.
