If this core cant get it done it's only a matter of time at this point. Organizations do this, it happens. A decade ago Tampa Bay transitioned from St Louis and Lecavalier to Stammer, Hedman and Kucherov. It took them years to figure it out. In that stretch they lost in the cup finals, lost in the ECF and then missed the playoffs the following year. It still took them a few years after that. Those earlier iterations, they transitioned from guys like Tyler Johnson and Drouin to Point, Gourde, Cirelli, etc.. so many good players have came and went over there through the years. McDonagh, Sergachev, JT Miller, Palat. You could go on. Hagel is a star there now. And I think one of the biggest takeaways there - many of the top players that have came through were not unattainable top of the draft picks. Stammer and Hedman, yes. Kucherov was a late 2nd rounder. Point was a 3rd rounder. Palat was an overager in the 7th round. They did a phenomenal job with UDFAs. A number of slick trades.
You're constantly working with the salary cap and identifying who's a core piece each year. So unless there's some major turnaround it looks like this group is starting to run its course. Trouba, Lindgren, Mika, Vinny and Kreider are all majorly struggling. Some are more movable than others. A new core will emerge.
