Rangers management basically said that no one other than Lundqvist is safe. I don't read that message necessarily as McDonagh and/or Zuccarello are going to be traded at the deadline. It may be that they will finish the season out with us or one or both of them will be traded on draft day or that one or both of them will come out of training camp still sporting Rangers jerseys.

Dealing guys like this--we want to get it right. And saying that 'yeah, that will be okay/acceptable/not bad'--whatever--from this team or that team doesn't really give me a happy feeling. Right now--there are teams looking to us because they want to win a Stanley Cup. We owe each and every one of them----n-o-t-h-i-n-g. Make them f***ing pay. IMO if I can't get a guy to me who can be a legit #1D back for Ryan McDonagh I am not trading him. Plan B then for me is to try to get another top 10 pick at the draft with maybe an add by the other team. That's what I'd do.

While I agree with the sentiment in general, McD should be worth a blue chip prospect, plus other stuff, what if they wait and there is no top 10 pick and another add type trade available at the draft?

I find the draft to maybe be the worst possible place to try to add picks as the teams have their hearts and minds set on it at that time. I think the possible suitors for a player with one year left on his deal are still going to be limited to those who feel themselves contenders, most of them are going to have later picks than what the Rangers will want back for McD at that time.

If they want to move players at the draft for picks, trading players who have term left to send to markets that have trouble retaining or acquiring long term talent, I think much like the Stepan trade, offers more options.

And McDonagh likely will have most of the teams picking in the top 10 on his no-go list, I would think.

Initially I hated the trade and I don’t think he’s been all that great but this year, Holden is quietly playing some decent hockey under the circumstances.

With his low cap hit, is it really worth trading him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick?

We might be better off just hanging onto him for now.

IDK..Just a thought

To try to extend him beyond this season, or just keep him for the playoff push?

I think letting him play his natural side instead of forcing him to play the right side will elevate his game.

I highly doubt that AV will be here next year so I'm sure the next coach will realize how important that is.

Because the games are meaningless and you can get a pick that has a small chance of being something good for a much longer time.

Yeah..Makes sense.
We are going to need some bodies for next season though.
I'm real curious so see how all this is going to shake out.

The only thing about the draft is that you probably have more teams to work with than at the trade deadline when there are specific buyers who are hoping to contend. Around the draft everyone is thinking about building for next season and some teams that were close last year might be willing to move some pieces and picks.

But yeah in general I do think that once teams are more focused on the draft, they're less likely to want to trade their picks.
