Trade him.

Saros got under $8m, for a very similar quality player. This guy won't take $11m.

SEE YOU LATER

This is a huge test for Drury.

You got balls?

Deal him.

Deal him now, even.

This is a punt year anyway. We didn't improve and we're just riding it out until we can move Trouba and do a retool anyway.

Trade Igor and you'll get a nice return of assets to expedite that process.

Do it.

Today.

Seeing it in writing may be shocking but overall it really isn't. He very clearly wants the max term and as close to 12 as he can get. 8 years 11.5 would be my guess as to what gets done. I personally would not give a goaltender that kind of contract and would let him walk but Drury's future is tied to Igor. If Igor leaves, the safety net is gone and the team is exposed. Good luck explaining to Dolan why the team is giving up 4 goals a game and is no longer competing for the Cup because you let 1 of your best players walk. You'll be out of a job sooner rather than later.

Agree that trading him today would be a baller move by Drury. It won't happen though because Igor is only paid $5.6 AAV this year, meaning we wouldn't be able to trade him for someone with a high cap hit like Marner.

When the cap starts being an issue you start bleeding players. It's what happened to Hagelin. It's what happened to Buch. It's what's going to happen to Trouba and Lindgren. At least this time we'll pretty much know where it'll start.

You can say you'd rather Swayman instead but the Bruins aren't going to trade us their top goalie. We might be able to work a deal for Hellebuyck but it'll cost us a lot in players/prospects/picks to get him. The question is whether you want Igor to go to full free agency with no real plan of who is going to be your next starting goalie except pot luck.
Most of us don't see shedding Trouba and Lindgren as "bleeding" players... If they were making salaries commensurate with 3rd pair we'd be happy keeping them... well maybe not HAPPY, but we wouldn't be actively trying to rid ourselves of them.

I am super excited for this season for a lot of reasons.

Last year we started with a 4th line of Goodrow - Bonino - Pitlick with Vesey rotating in. Then Chytil got hurt and we had a 3rd line of Cuylle - Brodz - Wheeler and a 4th line of Pitlick - Bonino - Vesey because Goodrow was also injured. Then with Kakko injury we had Vesey - Goodrow - Pitlick and Cuylle - Brodzinski - Bonino. Just absolutely terrible. 80 games of Goodrow and he had 4 goals almost all coming in the last handful of games. Bonino 45 games and 1 goal. Pitlick 34 games and 1 goal. Pathetic. Vesey, Brodz, and Cuylle were fine and had good moments.

The team missed Kakko and Chytil depth immensely. However, Laffy broke out with Troch and Panarin, it was the best line we had seen in years maybe even a full decade. Oh btw we won President trophy with those garbage 3rd and 4th lines.

The deadline guys were okay but ultimately giant duds.

And NOW, we have Chytil back (knock on wood) and with Kakko back (knock on wood). I would f***ing love to see these guys for a full season and build chemistry. Cuylle is now a sophmore and hungry for more. PK time for him? Our 4th line looks way more interesting with full season potentially for Rempe and Edstrom. Carrick is cheaper than Goodrow and plays the same role. Edstrom had a great training camp. Brett Berard is in the mix maybe as first injury callup for top 9. We still have Vesey and Brodz who scored 26 points in 80 games and 19 points in 57 games respectively.

Defense is on its way to being fixed because of the Lindgren injury. Jones is here. Mancini has forced everyone's eyes open. Trouba knows its his last year and probably wants to go out with a bang. Miller is playing with Fox. This has potential for best D pair in the league. Schneider is still young and getting better.

We have the best goalie in the world.

Oh and Smith >> Wheeler

TLDR:

Smith, Chytil, Kakko, Rempe, Edstrom, Carrick >>>>> Wheeler, Bonino, Pitlick, Goodrow, Wennberg, Roslovic

Edit: Kevin Weekes dropped a bomb on my post.

Also laughing at people getting bent out of shape over this number. He’s probably looking for 12 million per, either they settle on 11.5 or Drury goes to 12.

It’s not like there is a huge gap between between what he wants and what they are offering. We’re talking about a million dollars, it’s nothing when you get to this level.

93/20 looked their absolute best with vatrano. Smith could be a better version of vatrano.
Theres a possibility. Depends how much Smith as in the tank.
I didn't think they looked great with Vatrano. Better than with anyone else since Buch? Yes. But that's faint praise. They have not looked their best at 5v5 since Buch IMO. How much of that was Buch being shipped out and how much was just their own 5v5 decline is I guess open to debate.

At least with Hank, he went out of his way to be the face of the org. Always available after games to talk to media, etc… He was the unofficial captain of the team. Igor sulks and hides from reporters and even when he does talk it’s rarely of any substance.
