Remember when that world cup of hockey happened and team US went with character over talent and the North America under 23 team that was full of talent did way better?

More likely there's just a lot of overreacting in this thread when we are only 5 games into the season.

Did people really think we were going to be a good team? Did people really think there wouldn't be struggles along the way?
I can't speak for everyone but I felt we were a lottery team.

That being said there's a diff between being a work in progress team and having players who need to be benched for lack of effort.

I think we're in a situation where it's more individuals who are having issues, rather than the team. The team overall seems to be working pretty hard, even if some are struggling with effectiveness.

Everyone here really needs to listen to the gameday podcasts that Giannone and Maloney are doing. They're fantastic. One thing they mentioned is that the team has spent so much time working on the 5v5 game that they've barely spent any practice time working on special teams. They also mentioned that AV made it pretty easy to skip practice time and the players (or at least Skjei) that they aren't even getting enough practice time now because there's simply not enough time between CBA mandated days off and the regular schedule. That would explain some of the struggles they've been experiencing so far.

But seriously, the podcast has been REALLY good.

I agree the podcast has been very good up to this point

If we are 1-6 after these two back to back games, then you can say the reactions have been justified.

Btw, looks like Hank will play both games. Quinn getting desperate?

I don't know, this team's leadership has been question and challenged numerous times both by management, in the press, and on these boards.

Frankly, this is really just a continuation of those questions and concerns.

I'm not sure it's a matter of a being a "good" team or a "bad" team, so much as a team that displays certain qualities --- consistency, hard work, accountability. A team that pushes itself and feels an obligation to one another.

What I'm sensing is that certain guys are not meeting the teams expectations. Not so much from a production standpoint, but from an effort standpoint.

IMO, these benching are not about struggles. These benchings are about effort and a coach feeling that certain guys aren't giving it their all.

Many of the people I see on the boards don't like the losing, but feel a sense of hope when they see player growth and a good effort from young players. On the other end of spectrum, it seems like the biggest disappointment has been the play of certain veterans who don't seem to be leaving it all on the ice. These are the players who were expected to set the example for the team and be tone setters. These were also the same players that management has called out and asked to step up to the plate.

In this case, it's one of those somewhat rare times where fans can sense something is not meeting expectations, the staff's actions indicate they see it as well.

The Rangers, despite their many faults, have been in every game. The defense isn’t doing very much to activate the offense. I hate losing but I am heartened that the effort is there. Quinn clearly has the teams attention and he is moving pieces around trying to find things that work.

The first 10 games of the season are a crapshoot for every hockey team. No different here. Look around the league at the number of early season surprises, both good and bad.

This is not going to be an easy year or two. The players who are not going to be around when the team becomes relevant again won’t be here long.

I don't disagree with that, but then we've got posters calling out Quinn for benching players.

I guess the moral here is that we all need to have more patience.

I can't seem to find it on the android app I use for podcasts. What's the name of it ? Tried game day and searching by names with no luck.

It isn't in the Android store or Apple podcasts (yet). Right now it's just on SoundCloud. Giannone has been putting them up on his account... JayGeeMSG. Here's today's

I don't care about winning, I care about them rebuilding. That should mean emphasis on development. They are not treating the developing players all the same nor are they treating the vet players the same as the developing players.

It's the same thing as it had been under AV, this or that near talentless(by NHL standards) no future with the team player is getting ice time that would be better off going to a developing player. Then on the flip side they are pushing Chytil into anywhere they think he may show good at the NHL level. This player, Spooner/Lettieri/Hayes(add whoever you'd like) gets a pass for being pretty much totally invisible to this point yet Buch needs to show more.

I admit I do not get to see them practice, I do not know if they are jerks or whatever nor do I really care, but from the games so far and who has been scratched or benched there have been several double standards presented.

No coach treats all players the same.

I think the first step in the process is to see if you can light a fire under him and get him to be that consistent top six forward he should be.

Unfortunately, there's not many teams that can scratch a 23 year old skill forward and replace him with an equally skilled young player. So in most cases, you end up going with the less talented plug-in player.

I don't believe the idea is to turn him into a different player. I think the idea is to make him tap into the player he is capable of being. I don't think the Rangers expect Buch to be a defensive wiz, who dives to block shots and causes turnover with his checks.

Meh attempting to make Buch into a more consistent player likely is attempting to make him into a different player. Same as it probably would be with Zibanejad. Or Kreider.

Like I said I am all for it as long as its to the benefit of Buch and the team. If it works I don't care if he scratches him, demotes him to the 4th line or develops a pre-game ritual where he feeds him apple sauce from a jar labeled "super powers" that convinces him he is unstoppable... so long as it works and is a net positive.

Because at the end of the day Quinn's job is to win via maximizing his players, not make them better individuals by teaching them lessons or prove how tough of a coach he can be.

I guess at the end of the day, you maximize certain by challenging them a little more. It's not all that different than how I approach what I do for a living.

I don't raise expectations because I want people to fail. I simply find that more often than not, when you raise expectations (and keep them reasonable), a good majority of people respond.

And, to put it bluntly, those who can't, won't or don't usually find that they might be happier doing something else.

In Buch's case, I don't think the goal is to turn him into an Adam Graves type heart and soul player, though that would certainly be welcome if it happened. Instead, I think the goal is to make Buch the best version of himself that he can be out on the ice. What I'm sensing is that the staff doesn't feel he is giving that to the team.

If you can get a more consistent effort, and find the right buttons to push a player, that can make a significant difference. If that equates to a handful of extra goals and points, than so be it.

But I think it's been such a long time that we've seen a coach demand more from his players than the status quo that we've almost forgotten what it looks like.

What Quinn is doing now is not some alien concept that is testing the very fabric of our understanding of the sport.
