Re acquiring Panarin, etc., the concern would be that by the time the young guns are good enough to contend the Panarin contract will be an albatross. Hard to win the Cup in this league with an inefficient contract on the books.

It would only be an albatross if he's not meeting the expectations it would come with. If he's still putting up PPG numbers, I wouldn't worry.

Does he have the teammates to do that? Not one single player on this team is capable of 70 points without someone of equal or greater skill chipping in at an equal pace.

The Rangers have a 3% chance of making the playoffs. It’s early but it’s going to be a very long season.

The Rangers need to exercise great patience.

Look at the Maple Leafs. They gave Tavares $11M. Nylander does not want to accept a discount. He knows the Leafs are going to eventually trade him. It may not be this season assuming they can re-sign him. Next season. The season after. Why is he taking less money so they can trade him? Matthews is getting more than Tavares. Marner wants to get paid too. They can’t keep all of them because they gave Tavares $11M and they desperately need another D or two and Nylander will be going the other way for one of them.

The Rangers young players will make the NHL and they will become quality Nhlers worthy of big contracts but there is only so much money to go around. The Rangers aren’t winning anything with or without Panarin for a while. Why bother?

The last thing the Rangers need is a 31-32 year old Panarin with 2-3 years remaining on his contract who is not worth it anymore and they are having trouble signing all of their key players and putting a quality roster around them because Gorton have Panarin 7 years and $10M in the summer of 2019.

The Yankees have regretted trading for Stanton and his 10 year contract after less than one full calendar year.

Shattenkirk hasn’t lived up to the hype and expectations. He is from here so he should have what he was getting himself into by signing to play in NY.

We aren't talking about now, we're talking about when the team is hitting the window. So, that is to say, I would hope so.

Let's say the following players are moved at or before the TDL. What is your realistic unbiased return assuming they've had seasons similar to past ones? There will be more to it than just point totals obviously. Wondering how far apart we all are on value.

Kevin Hayes 16-17 season 17G 32A 49PTS 76GP
17-18 season 25G 19A 44PTS 76GP

Mats Zuccarello 16-17 season 15G 44A 59PTS 80GP
17-18 season 16G 37A 53PTS 80GP

Jimmy Vesey 16-17 season 16G 11A 27PTS 80GP
17-18 season 17G 11A 28PTS 79GP

Namestnikov 16-17 season 10G 18A 28PTS 74GP
17-18 season 22G 26A 48PTS 81GP

Adam McQuaid 16-17 season 2G 8A 10PTS 77GP
17-18 season 1G 3A 4PTS 38GP

Brendan Smith 16-17 season 3G 6A 9PTS 51GP
17-18 season 1G 7A 8PTS 44GP

Marc Staal 16-17 season Please get moved
17-18 season Why are you still here

Here's what I think the value of each of the aforementioned are. Below that is what I think will actually happen with each of these players...

Kevin Hayes- 2019 1st Round pick, B Prospect. Big Two-way centers have value.
Mats Zuccarello- 2019 1st Round Pick, B Level prospect. Every coach loves Zucc. Word spreads. He has value.
Jimmy Vesey- 2nd round pick, or bottom six player.
Namestnikov- 2nd round pick, plus a 5th round pick or a servicable bottom 6 player diverse enough to slide into top 6 if need be.
Adam McQuaid- 2nd round pick
Brendan Smith- 4th round pick
Marc Staal- No value due to contract.

What i think will happen.

Kevin Hayes will be moved by the deadline, and will be one of the big names to get traded. Market predicts the price, but starts with 2019 1st, and a B level prospect.
Mats Zuccarello doesn't get traded at the deadline and becomes the next Captain of the NYR, resigns here for another albatross of a contract.
Namestnikov doesn't get traded, and stays on with the NYR until his contract expires in 2020.
McQuaid moved at the deadline fora 2019 3rd round pick and a b level prospect
Brendan Smith Remains a NYR, through 2021
Marc Staal remains a NYR, through 2021

Not mentioned- Ryan Spooner, moved at the deadline for a serviceable bottom 6 player.

Kakko is ranked 3rd as of the last preseason rankings behind cozens.

Depends on the ranking you go by. I’ve seen him listed at #2.

@Sliverfish taking “goodie’s guy” had they made the trade with Edmonton in 2016 would have resulted in them ending up with Clayton Keller, which would have been followed by an epic whine fest not much unlike what we went through this past June.

Something tells me that pick will end up playing out the same way.

Cozens and Dach are the real deal, if they keep up their pace then you're talking about front line centers that will play in all situations.

Still though, lose for Hughes.

I love what Quinny is doing, the guys is building an identity and culture. So I can take the losing, but the idiocy night in and night out... It's getting a little difficult to tolerate.

Haven't the Rangers not drafted a player who has put up more than 60 points in decades? I think we'd have to go back to like, Leetch. The highest-producing player we've had on the team since Jagr has been Gaborik putting up 86 points his first season here. Nash maxed out at 69. That's 3 guys who have broken the 60-point mark since 2005 and none were homegrown. Zuke is the closest, but no cigar and I don't think he's capable of putting up that many points going forward. The stars may have to align here unless Panarin is going to be The Guy™ here. The pessimist in me says that won't happen if he ends up in NY.

Re: @Edge

"Under the circumstances, there really wasn’t much choice"

I believe there were a few choices (Brass, Dstep) available at JG's disposal but all the wrong choices were made IMO.

Moving fwd, we'll see what happens..

Finishing last would be great. Jack Hughes could do wonders for this franchise.

Adding Hughes, Kravtsov, Lias, and Hajek next season would have us up there with the Leafs young talent. Even with Hayes leaving, this is a hell of an offense

Kravtsov-Hughes-Zucc
Kreider-Zib-Buch
Chytil-Howden-Fast
Lettieri-Andersson-Namestnikov

Edit2: I completely forgot Vesey and Spooner exist while thinking about this offense. There’s a ton of depth here.

See the edit. Even without Hayes or keeping Hayes and dropping another vet, we’d finally have potential gamebreaking forwards in Kravstov and Hughes.

It’s hard not to get excited about that offense.
I'm not projecting Hughes because I know I will be disappointed in the end, we have to put Dach or Cozens in his spot to be more realistic.

So to be clear, the take-away here is that we don't want to be like the Leafs are right now?

Have you watched them yet this season?

The longer we go without making a trade the more uneasy I feel. There is no way Gorton will be able to make so many trades at the deadline, therefore he needs to start working on some of them now.

I could see us making some crazy trade for Nylander with possibly Staal or Smith going the other way.

Vesey and Spooner should be traded.

Wow it’s hard to believe that between Howden, Hajek, Lundqvist, whoever we can get by flipping Namestnikov, and whoever we draft with TBs pick next year, that anyone could still be complaining about losing McD and Miller.

This might end up being more of a steal than the insane return we got for Nash.

Thank goodness for Brett Howden. The guy has been the Rangers best forward this season so far. Where are the rest of these players? Zibanejad and Hayes need to be much better. Both of them have been terrible. What the F is wrong with them? Hopefully Chytil can get his game together. So much for Hayes taking that next step after scoring 25 goals last season. He stinks.
