You're so hung up on points, you're missing the bigger picture with this one. Kakko provides zero forecheck & plays solely along the boards, mostly with little intensity. Colton is above average skater, plays in your face on every shift & attacks the middle of the ice. Also he's very antagonistic, which we need way more of.
I think I AM looking at the bigger picture: Kakko is better, younger and cheaper. He isn’t a finished product, Colton is. As I said above, I like the player, if Colton and a plus that evens it out is the deal, fine.

Yeah this is a thing as well.

Totals aside, Kakko has the skeleton of being a good role player, but too many of those elements are missing.

He's decent along the boards and can defend, but he has very little speed, doesn't hit, isn't really a net front presence, and isn't great down low. Most of his work is on the side boards.

You don't need to be great at everything but he needs more of it to take on a role like that.
He’s also still only 22. Colton wasn’t even an NHLer at 22… or 23.

If cap is an issue after addressing defense get Dadonov to play with Panarin and move Lafreniere to Zibanejad.

Many people shitting on Kakko had very similar things to say about Laf exactly a year ago. Some people insisted he was a bust and wanted him traded for a bag of pucks. How did that work out? I think it's absolutely worth giving Kakko another shot. He's 22 and scored 40 points two seasons ago. He has skill and is a big body. Let's see if his skating improves and what he does next year. You might be right about him but you also thought you were right about Laf.

Filip Chytil. His buyout is 1/3. If the Rangers wanted to get out from the contract and they weren't sure about Chytil's health, the Rangers would save money. He doesn't have much trade value.

Isn’t mikkola currently playing in the finals?
He is. But you the cats paid him $6mm they would not have been able to afford evan rodrigues whos been extremely important for them this postseason

Colton seems like another Goodrow in that he’s a bottom 6 player who is probably overpaid for what he does

If they’re gonna spend the money/prospects I want to spend it on someone who’s got more upside than being on the third line

It’s going to be interesting seeing what Drury does to fill the right wing position. Marchasshole is gonna cost too much because it’ll be his last big deal. Guentzel will cost too much and have too many years on the contract. Unless Trouba magically gets traded I don’t see Guentzel being signed. Toffoli isn’t bad. Stamkos will cost too much unless he goes scorned ex girlfriend mode. Kane? He said he had unfinished business here and Mika said he wants a passer on his line. It would work salary wise and it would be a shorter deal with his age. He put up 47 points in 50 games. I mean it’s the most obvious Rangers move ever.

$4mm is pretty fair value for a 40 point 27 year old 3C for 3 more years. He also likes to play in the dirty areas. Something we desperately need.

I think itd be reasonable to expect something like trading adam sykora for Ross Colton and then accuring cap space to make big moves at the deadline. Start the season like

Kreider-Mika-Laff
Panarin-Trocheck-Chytil
Cuylle-Colton-Kakko
Vesey-Edstrom-Rempe
Brodz

Kandre-Fox
Brodie-Schneider
Jones-Trouba
Robertson

Then at deadline try to grab Chychrun and Gourde

Grew up a huge Devils fan, guessing he wouldn't care anymore getting to play so close to home though at this point as an adult.
You'd hope, but there would always be this little voice in the back of my head wondering if he's not doing dumb shit just to hurt the team. Just my paranoia.

I don’t think there’s a chance in hell the Rangers go with 2 rookies on the 4th line. Laviolette would bench them so often and burn out his regulars before the all star break.
