In his defense, watching Miller play defense is traumatic.
Miller is fine. He's still very young and has improved so much every year. He plays huge minutes and has one really bad game every ten or so and people complain. Guess what? It's out of the way for this series. I would not be surprised if he scores a huge goal tonight.

I feel like in three separate times in his career, Kakko would have a breakout week where his play on and off puck was super strong and it would reflect on the score sheet. And then he'd get injured. I really wish he got a conditioning stint post injury in Hartford in those early years. 10 points in 4 games at that level would be great for his confidence and he feels like a very confidence-based player.
His skating is the shits. Part of that is on him. I know a lot of guys like to go home in the offseason whether you're from Saskatchewan or Helsinki, but he needs to spend a summer with a speed skating coach and work on explosiveness and every day he's on the ice take at least 200 shots. Get in the habit of getting the puck off your stick and not overthinking.

Said it before, I'll say it again.

Whether it's here or not, this kid needs someone to heavily suggest that he watches a boat load of Johan Franzen tape and work on adding toughness and net front presence to his game.

That should give him a VERY valuable NHL career. His stick skills, agility, but lack of speed...are best suited to the trapezoid for garbage goals, tip ins, and screens.
All places of the ice he does fly bys of, but will refuse to park himself there and set up shop.
I thought with more age/playing nhl mins and just maturing as a man in general, he would have developed a little chip on his shoulder/attitude, but he’s the same vanilla attitude guy he was when he was drafted.
I don’t want to say no heart, cause that’s not right, but he needs to learn how to dial it up in the anger/confidence/ “im the big swinging Dick” department

Been chewing on this all afternoon.

That will never happen with Ziba and Krieder as Kreider is a net front guy when he isn't scoring off the rush. So Kakko has no place on that line and Laf icls cemented to Bread/Tro.

Hate to say it, but being we have wing depth coming up the pipe, it may be best for NYR to fill a void elsewhere and give this kid a chance to grow with another franchise that will feature him in their top 6.

I think from reading this place and from what the team says he's liked. IMO, they do this a a favor to him and helping the team currently at the same time.

Ziba and Krieds are locked in for years and so are Bread and Tro. It does both party's a disservice to keep Kappo here for more years just because we are invested in him.

I'm not saying give him away. Keep him feast or famine. But, float the idea at a GM gathering and see if someone bites with a fair "hockey trade" offer that fills a need.

Nail/Head.

Too passive.
Not selfish enough.
Ebb/Flow player.

Likeable kid, but I prefer assholes in my ranks of I'm going to work. Trocheck comes to mind. That greasy smile he gets sometimes when shtf is the guy I trust the most on the ice. Reminds me of Barnaby a little only more control, less loony toon.

When youre in win now mode are you paying $3-4mm for a winger you scratch when the conference finals roll around? Lets not pretend we wouldnt spend $3-4mm effectively to replace/exceed his production
His QO IS 2.4 million and he obviously hasn’t earned a bigger contract. If he can get 40 points next season, like he already did last season, while being very good on D and possession, that’s fine. This was a bad year for him. He never really got going was badly injured and hasn’t really been put in a position to succeed. I can see him surpassing last years numbers next year. He’s two seasons from UFA, so they can give him a show me deal over the summer.

Kakko's underperformed pretty significantly this season, but I can't throw all the blame on him. He was stuck with godawful Mika & Kreider early season, then Nick "net negative at the AHL-level" Bonino, then AHLer Johnny Brodvo, then Alex "couldnt find the other teams net if you glued him to it" Wennberg.

And the Cuylle-Brod-Kakko line even looked pretty good

Did this board just develop Alzheimer’s and forget that he looked perfectly fine with Zib and Kreider to start the season, got moved away from them because their counting stats sucked (everyone’s counting stats suck with them), then went down for a quarter of the season with a leg injury?

Yeah. Miller is fine guys. Right.

I'm down on Zibanejad more than anyone but who our centers?
Chytil can't stay healthy even if he donned the Ironman suit.
Honestly who cares, Zibanejad is a total loser. 2 of the last 3 years he’s under 40% xG in the playoffs at 5v5. He can’t hang with the top centers in the league. 1 5v5 goal in 14 games. Had 4 in 20 in his great run 2 years ago with a 31% HDCF. He’s awful.

Zib is a competent 2C, a very good one actually. The 1C argument is over.

We have to find someone willing to take on Trouba.

Yeah Florida dominated the last 40 minutes again, but these two guys lost us the game on individual plays. Zibanejad with the ultra high risk / very low reward pass to Wheeler instead of the obvious dump in or pass to Kreider (Cuylle)* cutting to the net.

Trouba full-sending to Tkachuk on a f***ing PK instead of maintainng the integrity of the box; FLA immediately exploits it.

We need a true 1C who who doesn't get outmatched by real ones e.g. Crosby, Barkov come playoffs.

And we have to shed the anker that is Jacob Trouba.

1. bold = easier said than done
2. often smarter to shoot ahead of target, not where target currently is, = miss. As that translates here, need is to try and get a foundation piece for correct currency, not a 1-2 yr stopgap, so i.e., Byfield not Kopitar

3. When bern says Byfield = exception to the rule, if there is a rare possibility that circumstances may permit LA to even consider moving Byfield for overpay, then you effin listen to me and do it.
Byfield will not be cheap and require massive overpay, esp w/extension. But depending on currency used to acquire can make sense.

Zib is still OVERALL more part of the solution than the problem, but as and for as a pivot, we need to seriously consider while keeping wonder twins together may be best option, getting a 1C w/Kreider is becoming mo nec.

Last nite Kreider channelled his inner ... Dave Keon! and while not known for his hands, made an excellent pass to Zib, who granted only had a second to respond, but that was an outstanding chance Mika flubbed.

I am open to what works with an open mind, but it is starting to look like we need to have Zib slide to RW

so we are tied 2 apiece...
bern said we are nominally [51-49] better
= gotta expect round goes 6-7 games

what is concerning is we are overmatched vs a tide of superior physical play [not apparently due to lack of effort]

to mitigate this, again, Rempe MUST PLAY EXTENSIVE MINS
Nice they played him w/3-ish mins left 3rd period and the sky did not fall in,
but
this is NOT the time for baby steps

Ros not getting it done
Wenn is useless

Assuming no injuries we don't know about, given the cards to play being what we have, not what we'd like...

Kreider - Goodrow - Zib
Panarin - Tro - LaF
Cuylle - Chytil - KK

now, what's the deal w/Edstrom? Is he available? If yes, 4C. If not...
Wheeler - Brodz - Rempe

Lindgren is hanging by a thread
needs a nite off
Jones = forced
b'c
effin R mgmt did not listen to bern and develop Robertson

end rant
peace out

Have to try and make a hockey trade ala Huberdeau Tkachuk. There will be takers lower in the standings for Zibanejads skill.

If you can’t make that work go Stevenson, Wennberg in free agency and try and make something happen in the draft.

This team is deep, they’re 6 wins away from the cup in spite of a defenseman that bleeds goals against, a Norris level defenseman on one leg and no shows from 4/6th of their top 6 in the ECF.

Drop a prime-ish Stepan/Brassard type that while not top end, shows up in the playoffs and keeps it simple in that center spot and the rangers are waiting to see the result of the WCF after game 5.

Best of 3. Home ice NY Rangers. I'll take it.

We've all watched this series closely. We're pretty lucky to be here, especially with our "#1" center already on a beach in Cabo.

Igor can only do so much .

Complimentary players have done their thing.

Big boys have this best of 3 to show their value when the oven is on high.

I believe the fate of Mika Zibanejads popularity and support as a NYR, in the eyes of it's hardcore fanbase, relies on these next 2-3 games.

The concerns in regards to puck movement from the back-end are really the tell-tale of this team but that's been known. It would be nice to add another forward or two who can create in small spaces, ala Trochek. They don't need to be a ppg player, but someone who can attack a defender and create some space. I truly think Berard could be one of those guys with the way he plays.

Well.... we need centers.

Moving out Trouba this offseason is mandatory. The guy sucks. I'm tired of hearing how he is physical. You can get physical for $2m a year to play all facets of the rest of the game better than Trouba does. Also Jones needs a spot. He can move the puck. Get him on the ice.

The next move is using the freed up cap space to try to move Mika and get a young 1C and a first pair defender to play next to Fox or anchor a second pairing in conjunction with Fox.

Those are the moves this offseason. It's $16m out. You can dangle the first, and perhaps Kakko, Othmann, or the returns for Mika/Trouba to get those pieces. A guy like Chychrun shouldn't empty the cupboard. The center will, though. But if the Rangers want to win that's what they have to do. They screwed themselves by not getting more centers in here when they had the chance.
