The Rangers also want Andersson and Chytil to play. How is Quinn dividing the ice time between Zibanejad, Hayes, Andersson and Chytil? Hayes wasn't very good as the 2nd line center last season. He did nothing until after the trade deadline. The Rangers were counting on him to replace Stepan and it didn't happen. He failed to carry the load last season. If Hayes was taking that next step,it would have happened already or maybe he isn't that type of player. Maybe he is a 3rd line center who will make ~$6M per in his next regrettable long term contract.
Wasn't Stepan "supposedly" the No. 1 center? I think they expected Zibanejad to "replace" him.

Also, AV never played him to carry the load. He was used as a checking center against the top lines.

Negotiations started at the end of June. 3 months should have been enough time. But, if you want to point fingers about their not being enough time, the NHL made it's first proposal in the middle of July. The NHLPA didn't respond for a whole month.
3 months? definitely not enough time....NHL waits and throws out a proposal they know won't be acceptable and will take time off the clock....no matter how you look at it, the NHL (read Buttface) strategies are lockout based.

And somehow it's all Bettman's fault

Yeah, I consider the last lockout to have both sides being at fault. The 2004 one... I get it from the players standpoint. They were fighting against an implementation of a drastically new system that was entirely not to their benefit. Yes, they should have seen the writing on the wall, but this is what happens. To me, these negotiations are less about bargaining and more about both sides getting in the right mind frame to agree on a compromise. That takes time... and in my view, too much time.

Don't blame Bettman. Blame the owners.

That's another two way street. Bettman does what the owners want, but often the owners want what Bettman is advising them they should want.

Katie Strang had an article in The Athletic last week regarding the NHL CBA. There is no reason why there should be another lockout. The game is in good shape. Each side gets 50%. The players don't like escrow but that's part of the cap system. Seattle will be coming into the league soon. Bettman always take the NHLPA to the cleaners. It doesn't matter if Goodenow, Saskin or Fehr is running the NHLPA. The NHL wins every negotiation. More NHL jobs with Seattle. More AHL jobs.

A lockout would be very surprising, Bettman was willing to trade OG participation for prolonging the current CBA in advance.

Will the PA strike to adjust the basis for HRR?

I want a strike, lockout and/or a drastically reduced cap. It’s completely worthless to rebuild when the cap is going up a ton and there is no shakeup.

Did Hayes replace Mika then?

Hayes was supposed to step up last season. They were counting on him. They traded Stepan. Look at the comments from Gorton and AV before last season. They didn't trade Bozak or another center.

Hayes is 26 years old. He should have stepped already. He has been in the NHL for four seasons.

You guys act like Hayes is Mark Messier.

If majority rules was still in effect, I'd agree...I don't believe more than half the owners wanted the lockouts.

Far from it. I don't recall Hayes ever being projected to be a #1 center...don't think many felt he'd be a #2.

Yet he scored a career high in goals playing as a checking center. I'd call that stepping up.

Changing your game to play the way the coach uses you and succeeding? I'd call that stepping up.

What is it he was supposed to have done that he hasn't?

They have the ability(WHL Tacoma Rockets), it has been a long time since they needed it(mid 90s). Showare center gets the ice shows and hockey(Thunderbirds) now but back in the day TD had hockey and ice capades.
When it comes to major construction Seattle is like any other major city, you never know how it will go until the project begins(the tunnel has been a mess but that is what happens when you hire the same company that did the "big dig" in Boston). For the purpose of the NYR and an expansion draft I would stick with the 2020 season. They seem to be pushing that pretty heavy.

Yea it will be, keep the roof but remove everything else and dig down a couple stories more than what it is right now.
Yea TD is a dump to say the least(up there with the Cow Palace). It is being renovated so we will see how that ends up but I think it will be much better. Also it is supposed to be a half season if they need it, arena, not a semi permeant solution.
This made me laugh so much. My Pacific Hockey League team played against the Shamrocks in the Cow Palace in 1977-78. To call it a dump is a compliment. The place was falling apart, seats were broken all over the arena, the "press box" was a table in front of a row of seats and the building was attached to several hundred livestock stables and holding pens that gave the whole place an aroma that remined me of my summers at a dairy farm in Vermont. I'm lucky enough to say I was there.
Incredibly it is still there and in business. (77 years old)

The only players of any value to RangerBoy are league's very elite, and only until they turn 26.

Please don't ever use a comparison between 'checking center' and 'Hayes' in the same sentence, ever again. Like, that is completely forbidden and a misconception of his character.

REBUILDING: New York Islanders, New York Rangers

The Islanders wish they weren’t rebuilders, but John Tavares’ and de Haan’s departures in free agency crushed any dreams of immediate contention. Adding stopgaps Leo Komarov, Matt Martin and Valtteri Filppula reek of new GM Lou Lamoriello priming his roster to tank, just as he did so effectively in Toronto.

Even though Isles fans may feel too demoralized to listen right now, this team does have some exciting players with whom to restart, including Calder Trophy winner Mathew Barzal, fresh off the best rookie year since Malkin’s 2006-07. By pretty much all accounts the Islanders had a great draft, adding goal scorer Oliver Wahlstrom and puck-moving blueliner Noah Dobson to a prospect group already boasting Kieffer Bellows, with Ryan Pulock ready to play big minutes on defense after a breakout 2017-18. The Isles have some great goaltending prospects, too, soon to be mentored by the legendary guru Mitch Korn, who joins the team with new coach Barry Trotz, fresh off his Cup win with Washington. All hope is not lost, though the Isles remain many years away from Cup contention.

Same goes for the Rangers, who have flipped the script on their usual win-now strategy since GM Jeff Gorton and team president Glen Sather promised a commitment to youth in a letter to their fans last winter. So far, so good, with no ill-advised veteran signings. The Blueshirts are content to keep roster spots open for young centers Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil. They enjoyed an unheard-of three picks in the 2018 draft’s first round, nabbing a nifty scorer in Vitali Kravstov plus defensemen K’Andre Miller and Nils Lundkvist. None profiles as a franchise-altering superstar in the mold of Rasmus Dahlin or Connor McDavid, though. The Rangers would be wise to clutch their first-round picks and hoard some more high-end talent to build a true juggernaut down the road. A basement finish and lottery pick in 2018-19 would actually be great news. But is future Hall of Fame goaltender Henrik Lundqvist willing to stomach that?

Stanley Cup Windows: Metropolitan Division

Maybe the Rangers and Lundqvist should have another talk this winter about his future with the team.

The Rangers being awful and ending up with a top 3-5 pick in the lottery is the best course of action for the franchise. The players won't like it. Many of those players won't be here when this team is finally able to compete for a championship. Good luck with your next team.

Getting back to Hayes

Vigneault said the Rangers wouldn't have traded Stepan if they didn't believe Hayes was ready for it.

"He's going to get the opportunity," Vigneault said. "I'm very confident that he's going to prove us right, that we had every reason to have total faith in him."

Hayes ready for bigger role with Rangers after Stepan trade

Hayes has been in the NHL for four seasons and nobody knows what he is. They keep waiting for him to take the next step. Part of that falls on Hayes. The opportunity has been there for him. Hayes has been talking about it for two years.
