Friedman clarified something on his podcast this morning re ADA. In his column earlier this week he had said the Rangers would eat salary to facilitate a Tony D trade.

This morning on the podcast he clarified that is NOT the case. As the buyout is just 1/3 of his salary owed, Gorton told him they'll just eat the buyout before they take on a big salary. They won't be taking anyone else's cap dump.

What would the plan even be with Bennett. Play him at 3C? Rooney and PDG and Blackwell have all played well in limited time and pushing them out for Sam Bennett is fine i guess but longterm i dont get it.

Long term it gives you multiple viable options for your middle six. Bennett is only 24. Who's to say he doesn't put it together and become a 45-50 point 2 way C? That would be a great #2C for us, especially with his playoff pedigree.

If Chytil turns a corner, even better. You then have Zibanejad, Chytil, Bennett, Howden down the middle to build around.

Its quite laughable to even suggest there is some concern about Bennett blocking any one of those career 4th liners, no matter how well they have played...

Seriously. As well as Rooney, PDG, Blackwell have played, there isn't room for all 3 beyond this year and its likely only 1 or 2 come back anyway.

They were some great finds in free agency, but I don't think Gorton is losing sleep about how to distribute $ and ice time to his 4th line veterans who will either come back at $1.25m or less, or walk somewhere else and be replaced by a cheaper option.

He's stuck behind, Monhahn, Lindholm and Backlund most of the time. I've heard he has some defensive discrepancies. He's still young enough to develop. Good on faceoffs. Has an edge. Hits. Has good hands. Can grind it out... he has the tool box. I think he's a lot better than people are making it sound like.

It's also interesting, a lot of our players start a major upswing at 24-25. Buch, Mika, Strome, ADA etc.. I'm all about it.

Not saying that Bennett will suddenly become a 25 goal, 60 point player or match the hype of his draft year, but it is worth pointing out that he's younger than guys like ADA, Georgiev, Shesterkin and Lemieux.

So this is a guy with some room to continue his growth still.

If ADA can keep his head out of his ass, he could actually be a godsend for that franchise.

So they shouldn't be in distress.
Big IF there lol

It’s actually not a bad fit. He can be a third pairing guy that will QB their PP. He’ll just be an expensive third pairing PP specialist

As for posters who have been concerned about a 'log jam' of forwards.

Competition is good. Up and down the lineup. Guys play better when they know there's a perfectly competent replacement waiting to take your place.

While I'm as thrilled as anyone that PDG, Blackwell, Rooney, and others have shown well, none of them are the kind of player that has me thinking we need to avoid trades that might reduce their role somewhat.

There are always injuries. I think odds are on average you're missing between 1-2 forwards each game. Depth is important, especially in a season where we might lose players randomly from game to game with COVID or COVID protocol. We're also just about scraping the barrel in forward depth- I'd rather not see Brodzinski ever again

PDG has *some upside as a useful 4th line utility guy who can slot around the lineup to provide energy. All three have been good, but it’s also a small sample size and Rooney and Blackwell are at the stage in their careers where they are playing for their NHL lives. Without an impact, they’re headed to Europe soon. Having hungry players is good, but I wouldn’t count on all three of them being as solid as they’ve each been in ~5 games over the course of the full 56, let alone 82 games. Absolutely nothing against a single one of them, but you don’t pass on adding legitimate middle six players with upside because you’re worried about whether that steals time from Rooney/Blackwell, who will still get games due to injuries and Quinn’s propensity for shuffling things.

Anything new to report Edge?

That would make Battle of Alberta match ups must watches. Btw, I've lost count of how many times I've refreshed the thread hoping to see that the trade went down.

Not to mention guys like Zbad and Tony turned their games up at or around Bennett’s age, upon getting to NY. I also don’t expect a 50-60 point player, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he fit Panarin’s wing like a glove or became a solid 35-40 point 3C who slots up and gets some PP time. Just depends on fit. He’d at an age where, if he’s ever going to take a new step forward, it would be right around now, following a change of scenery.

Good question. I dont think the NHL would count scratches as being Quarantined. I think he has to go through tests I believe but to be honest I don’t know.
I believe the biggest holdup for Laine was getting a US work permit. I heard he was actually in Ottawa at the US Embassy to get the necessary paperwork. Then, since he came into the country on a private jet he needed two negative tests before he could play.
