Again think what you want of Monahan and possible warts in his game, but he's on another level than Danault.
I think Monahan is a better player but I think Danault will cost less and is a better fit stylistically. I also think he’s someone who could flourish here.

like I said I’d be happy with either.

310 minutes is what...like, 25 games worth of a sample size?

The fact that he's literally stapled to Gaudreau is also somewhat concerning. There are other concerns too.

Might as well just keep Strome then.

Playing devil's advocate for a second, let's even assume that Monahan is leaching off Johnny Hockey and would do the same here with one of our wingers.

The question might become, from a straight production standpoint, would I rather have someone leaching 20 goals and 70 points off our wingers for $5 million, or leaching 35 goals and 80 points off our wingers for $6 million?

He cost's twice as much as Strome now. In a few weeks, I don't think that's the case. And that's a key component to consider.

As for ADA's value, what do you feel is an appropriate type/ballpark of return?
A 2C on an ELC or just coming off one, with 1C upside.

In other words, Strome is his comparable?
That is my concern.

Why trade assest for Strome 2.0 when we got him already?

Glass I understand.
Eichel is a no brainer.
A pick in under 10 is Lundell or Sanderson for that matter are on the board? Sure I get it.

We were soft as butter vs Carolina who we handled all season. No reason to trade for a guy who is not a 180 from the guy we already have whom isn't, IMO, ideal to begin with.

I really don't think there's any mystery about Monahan. He's not an elite center and he seems to thrive primarily when he has a line-driving, playmaking winger on his flank. Thrive to the tune of roughly 30G and 60P per season. The Rangers have that kind of winger in their lineup and are less than 100 hours away from adding another. He simply seems to fit the hole better than what they have.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. This is as much about finding the right blend of players as it is finding great players.

Yeah I think the thing here would be that someone like Monahan isn't being brought in to be a #1 center and carry a line, he'd be brought in to ride shotgun with arguably the best winger in the NHL and do a better job of it than the current option.

But I dunno, whatever happens happens

I am really not concerned with Monahan spending most of his time with Gaudreau. He is still a 30 goals / 40 assist guy signed for 3 more years @ $6.35 per year, and he is an actual center with over 9,600 faceoffs taken @ 50.3% success rate. The guy performs. He has been doing it since he came into the league, which is the same time Gaudreau did. Who is to say they havent both done well for each other? He shows he is capable of playing with talent. Strome just started to show he can do that this year

I’m not going to protest against him, but man this is the kind of player that our fanbase will not be able to stand if he isn’t performing.

That's a tough swing for ADA and not one that I think is likely to come around.

Obviously you can point to a guy like Zibanejad, but that's probably the exception and there were a lot of people who didn't see him as a first line center. Hell, a lot of people weren't even sure he was center until about a year ago.

If they trade DeAngelo it better be for someone good or we're going to really regret it.

That challenge is finding consensus from fans as to what qualifies as good. It's subjective.

You can throw a name out there and have half the fans tell you they think a guy is good, and half the fans tell you they thing the guy is dog shit.

And if you're getting 100 percent agreement that the guy is good, the cost is going to be a lot higher than ADA.

Since they're not dealing Trouba or Fox, and have one of the best RHD outside of the NHL on the way in a year, still need to balance the lineup and manage the salary cap, and do not appear willing to commit long-term to DeAngelo, I think it's inevitable deAngelo gets moved, regardless of how much regret there may be.

And whats the alternative, pay Deangelo 6 million+ to be on our 3rd pair and play the power play? The minuet we signed that Trouba contract we screwed ourselves and basically sealed Deangelos fate.

Well that player better be elite at something because DeAngelo is.
