and honestly as dumb as it may sound, the optics of winning the draft lottery in such a surprising way and then turning around and trading it looks bad
The fans are sold on the excitement of drafting #1 overall. Even people who don't follow prospects know #1 overall means you are (should be) getting an excellent player who can alter your franchise.
Trading that for anything less than a massive overpayment you can spin to the fans is a rough move
After all the somewhat recent history of the Rangers (past 25 years or so) chasing the stars of other teams, a lot of people just want to see them develop their own team and their own star players, not just keep trading for others

I’m a bit confused as to why Tkachuk + 5 is so outlandish. You’re moving down 4 spots while also adding a physical 6’4 21 year old who is already pretty much a 50 point center. Lafreniere looks like a great prospect but as we’ve seen with Hughes, Kakko, Hischier, etc. putting up 45+ as a rookie isn’t exactly in the bag. Tkachuk has two seasons of 45 points in 71 games and is a physical specimen and a young center, which we need much more than a winger. Could there be pluses in the deal to fine tune it? Sure, but I don’t know that I’d balk at Tkachuk + 5. Draft picks are so f***ing overrated these days.

This kid is 21, listed at 6’4 212, credited with 477 hits in his 142 career games, which would destroy the totals for any Ranger in that time frame and looks, easily, like a 70+ point power forward center going forward.

Because you don't trade the 1st overall pick for anything that isn't at the very least an overpayment, which that is not. I feel like people forget who we are drafting and the hype that existed around Laf until we were lucky enough to snag the first overall pick (which is typical for how people treat the Rangers). He has always been considered a significantly better prospect than Hughes, Kakko, Hischier. I mean, I remember him being talked about closer to the MacKinnon/McDavid/Matthews level of prospect than the previous three that were mentioned.

Additionally, I don't know how anyone can say with a straight face that in the salary cap era, DRAFT PICKS are overrated.

Committing big money to Torey Krug is a disaster in the making.

I agree with you. Rangers scoring from the blueline was not a issue.

how about some more shutdown defensive dman either than can skate or with snarl or both

Yeah I’m not even listening to offers for 1oa. We have been waiting for this forever. Don’t even entertain trying to get cute.

IMO JG isn't doing his job if he doesn't listen to offers. how long the franchise has waited for the top pick doesn't matter if I'm the GM looking for the best value for the franchise...

now I'm saying no unless the offer is so lopsided in our favor that the other GM gets drug tested and fired immediately after the deal is made...but I'm still picking up the phone to listen cause you never know how dumb someone is lol

Dave Maloney on Sirius/XM said giving up 1OA for Brady Tkachuk and 5OA would be a good trade for the Rangers. Nothing substantive.

I think Tkachuk + 3rd overall AND 5th overall pick would seriously get me to think, but Ottawa would never offer that.

That would be Tkachuk + either Byfield/Stutzle and someone like a Sanderson/Drysdale/Raymond/Rossi

I think majority of fans think almost nothing will be enough for 1OA. Same goes for me. Already made myself commit to Lafreniere fully and almost every trade scenario would make me only sad. Ottawa #3, #5 and Tkachuk is more than reasonable trade on paper, but i still would have hard time to accept that.

I'm a huge Tkachuk fan but him and #5 isn't anywhere close to enough. The odds of both those assets combining to be as good as Lafreniere can be is pretty low, let alone one of them matching him if the other one stalls out or fails to develop. At least with #3 you'd be getting a crack at one of the other top-end talents in the draft in Stutzle or Byfield.

I know it's been discussed before tho I forget the substance of it but what would it take to get Buffalo to consider dealing Eichel to us?

Would I be off by saying two #1's a Chytil and Robertson for example could be enticing to the Sabres and something we could afford to do? I dunno...just spit balling here...thoughts?

And those 3 pieces probably help out more than just Laf but I'm all in on having this high scoring alpha dog on the ice for us. I think he's going to change the make up of this team over the next couple of years. That to me is more important especially with how deep we are with young NHL talent and our prospect pool.

Cirelli isn’t a difference maker? You can just stop now.

For stat sheet surfers he isn't, but he's one of the best defensive centers in the league that was forced into a 2nd line role and did fairly well. He was also playing with Tyler Johnson and Alex Killorn. Good players, but they're the most likely candidates to be shipped out of town because they aren't as good as their other players.

His stats away from those players are infinitely better. Shot rates and xGF go from below average for their team to right up their with the top line. Point missed those games and he got moved with Kucherov and Palat and was fantastic.

This is why people are clamoring for him. Putting him with Panarin and one of the young RWs could be a fantastic line to pair with the Zibanejad line. Tampa knows what they have in him. They're going to jettison the other two and build a new line around Cirelli for next season.

The reason 1oa never gets dealt is bc the cost is prohibitive, this means IF it is traded the return will be massive.

BT, #3, #5 for #1 AG/LA and strome is something you would have to consider.

Then see if you can deal #3 and #22 to LA for #2 and #35

Essentially turn AL, #22, strome, AG/LA into BT, Byfield, whoever they pick at #5. You have to consider that. I think if ott had #2 it would be easier to make a deal work bc most of this board seems to like byfield. I think it could depend how big of a gap nyr sees between stutzle and byfield.

Would need something stupid like Tkachuk, Chabot and the #3. Otherwise keep the pick and draft your next franchise player.
Agree, that deal would be too good to pass up. Rangers would be guaranteed either Byfield or Stutzle which would cover a big missing piece for us. Tkachuk needs no introduction & chabot would solve LD. OTT would never do this in a million years.

Their threshold for acceptable is beyond either of us. I know you probably are just using 50 points as a 2nd C standard base line. I think it might be a bit much to expect 50 from him this year. I personally think that they need to view him as a legit 2C by the end of next season. He may not even play much on the 2nd line, but he needs to play in such a way that they look at him as being the inevitable choice. If they have serious doubts by the end of the season, I could easily see them making other plans. Especially if they traded ADA for Glass/Krebs, which both seem to be more natural playmaking Cs.
50 points actually gets you to the top line, production wise. I was using it as a barometer as that is a number that people love to throw around.

I agree that he will probably not get much time on the second line next year, though one never knows. What I believe he needs to look like is a player who is taking the steps to where one can see that he wings up at the 2C at the end of the journey. Does not mean that the journey does not yet have several more years to go. He just has to take steps forward and show that yes, he is on his way there.

You guys are crazy if you wouldn't accept Tkachuk, the #3, AND the #5. I mean Ottawa would never do that any way, but in this hypothetical, that is just a bonkers trade and a no brainer to me.

Agree. That’s an insane haul . Tkachuk is a great player in the making and built for playoff hockey, then you can get one of Byfield/Stützle and then whomever you want out of Sanderson/Rossi/Perfetti etc.

Rebuild over, we’re set
