No. The team is not a "one player away" team. Eichel's price will be fair, but this team is not close to being the type of team that can push their chips to the middle. Even with Eichel in tow
There are reasonable, foreseeable packages that would not involve emptying our cupboard. Not enough to pry away Eichel from Buffalo were they first inclined to try to hold him; but if they come to a decision that they are gonna need to deal him, either from his own desire to get out or due to team finances, the Rangers can put together an enhanced Nash-like package that would probably beat out any other offer, but without “pushing their chips in” either.
For example, Chytil, ADA, 22, and a future first, maybe one additional D prospect, something like that. Chytil is replaced by Eichel, ADA is superfluous anyway as you’ve already pointed out, 22/future first are intangibles.
It’s a lot but it’s hardly pushing all our chips in. We’d still have Lafreniere, Kakko, Kravtsov, Eichel, Panarin, Zibanejad, Kreider, Gauthier, Howden and maybe even Andersson to build around at forward. On D you’d still have Fox, Trouba, Lundkvist, Hajek, Robertson, Miller, Jones, Reunanon, Rykov.
And Strome and Buch would eventually be deadline trade chips to recoup the firsts you just parted with.
No brainer, really, though some like to be contrarian just for the sake of being difficult.
