Well considering that Kapanen basically brought back 15 and a recent 2nd round pick, I would think Buch+21-24 has more value than 14.

If Lundell is still on the board and we can do Buch + Carolina pick, it's almost a must-do.

Incoming chastisement from True Blue. Brace yourself.

I understand his POV.

But if Buchnevich is what is in the way between you and landing Lundell or a sliding Rossi, It's an easy call for me. Those are guys who can step in and play right away and maybe you take a bit of a hit next year, but 2,3,4,5 years down the line, you're going to love that you pounced on that opportunity when you did.

It's called long term planning and it's downright foolish to choose a guy who is no better than your eventual 5th or 6th forward - or worse - over a prospect (albeit one who "hasn't played in the NHL yet") who you project to be a 2C or better. Just silliness when you have an abundance of young high end wingers and a dearth of centers.

I suspect it's just to be contrarian at this point, frankly.

Yeah like 2k2 I'm not actively shopping Buchnevich, but getting a blue chip center would really set our rebuild up for a long, long time.

We're also going to have to try to afford Zibanejad in a few years.

I think it's more about timing. Every kiddo in the rebuild era has been at the very least not physically ready for the NHL game and has frankly sucked noodles their first year or two years outside of the goalies. Having Buchnevich to take hard minutes and hard matchups and succeed in taking them for the next year or two has a lot of value that has nothing to do with 5 years from now.

There's a lot of value in not getting your head caved in. Players can lose confidence, develop bad habits, bust. That aspect of development is mostly ignored on this board and it's just not necessary if you actually have options.

If a top-20 pick is available for Strome, he’s gone. If a top-15 pick is available for Buchnevich, he’s gone too. I don’t see either happening.

We have bodies to take those minutes and protect the guys who will actually be here long term.

Top 9 minutes and some ST time is a great way to break in a young forward who isn't awesome off the bat.

I think we totally agree on this and yes at some point you don't blink when someone offers you 150 cents on the dollar for a deal. But on the right side Buchnevich is the keystone to that idea for next year. The year after when he's an RFA? See ya for your 45 second video tribute Pavel.

I don't think Strome is in this grouping.
I agree we view Strome probably differently than the rest of the league.
I know Buch is a different player but who is better overall Buch or Kapanen? The Pens could have realistically traded Jarvis plus Hallander for Kapanen.

Wait who are we trading K'Andre for? Unless its Zegras let's move on.

The time to discuss Buch/Strome for a top 15 pick was probably before someone traded Kapanen for a 15th and the entire league collectively discussed how stupid it was.

I just named them
Not really.

Kreider and Panarin - play on the opposite side

Kaapo Kakko - can he first earn the spot in camp? Besides, at last check there are two spots for RW in the top 6.

Julien Gauthier - Buchnevich is blocking Gauthier? Really?

Morgan Barron and Vitali Kravtsov - Neither of whom played exactly one second of NHL time. So I fail to see how their spot in the top-6 is being blocked by anyone.

Alexis LafreNYR - plays on the opposite side of the ice. And hasn't even been drafted yet so am not sure how Buchnevich is blocking him either.

Penguins plan is probably gonna be perfect. Completely ruin the future to win now for as long as their window even remotely is open. Then Sid and Malkin hangs them up and they will have by far the worst team in the league for like 4-5 years again and luck out and get another generational player like Mario/Sid.
Good point. Probably not the way JR is thinking but I could see that happening. lol

Probably, but that's only because of Murray's reputation. Geo is the better goalie at this point.
Probably depends on the GM. Some are gonna value the Cup and track record Murray's got, despite the salary he'll command. Goalies are tough.
