Mikos- Yeah I am sure they are running live stats and look at possession data also or shots/attempts, but I don't think Babs have to consult them that often though to see if a unit fails a match-ups or not.

No but they put on the record to show the players after the games.

I can admit that I am not that worried about McDonaghs next contract. He isn't built like those types that lose a step that easily, Neidermayer played his by far best hockey way into his 30s. McD takes a lot of punishment, but OTOH the game isn't that extremely physical.

But, we have tremendous depth on the blueline right now. What type of forward could we get for McDonagh now? Like let's say we dealt him for a forward right now. Our blueline would be:
Staal-Shatty
Skjei-Smith
Bereglazov-DeAngelo
Holden

With Graves and Pionk on the depth chart, things could be a lot worse. I think Skjei in the coming year or two is going to take the step up and become a capable top D. But sure it would be better if McD was on it.

But could we get a top young forward for McD?

Mikos those are some pretty great posts

How is giving a long term contract to Staal at age 28 and Girardi at age 29 remotely similar to giving one to Zibanejad at age 24 and McDonagh at age 24

Thank you.

Exactly, which is why no one would trade for Girardi. If we bought out Staal, I could see him getting a similar contract to what G just signed. The biggest issue with both buyouts is I think the penalties in years 3&4. Someone has the breakdown in a table in one of these threads

[table="head;width=4200]SEASON|PENALTY CAP M STAAL|PENALTY CAP D GIRARDI|TOTAL CAP PENALTY|CONTRACTS|SAVINGS/COST|RFA/UFA

I added another column, showing the players who will be RFA or UFA. * indicates current ELC.

2018-19, the total cap-hit is 5.74m, but we have 7.8m of Nash and 1.65m of Grabner coming off the books to re-sign Vesey, Skjei, Miller and Hayes
2019-20, the total cap-hit goes up by 1m, with 4 players being UFA/RFA which we all want to keep, right? Now, that's a tough one. It still saves 4.4m due to Girardi and Staal both being on the team had they not been bought out though.
2020-21, Only Kreider coming off his contract of our current squad, but the cap penalty drops from 6.7m to 5m.

2019-20 seems to be the most difficult season to work around but they will manage.

I think RB was referring to them not chit chatting with him but telling him that only a perfect approach will do in NY or he will be on a 4th team before he knows it.

Yeah, and I'd assume its the same with all players that enter the organisation. "Hi, welcome to the club. Play by our rules or you are out."

Are you aware about the bad reputation DeAngelo has create by his own immaturity?

I can tell you are not with the stupid response......

He is an extremely talented player but his attitude and mouth have got him into trouble.

The Rangers brass sat him down face to face and told him to stop the nonsense. He has a great opportunity here.

It's amazing how 'stupid' means different things to different people. I'd say stating the bleeding obvious (like your post) is pretty stupid, but here we are. As I said above, if they aren't sitting every new player down face to face and communicating what's expected of them then they are an absolute shambles of a team and should probably all look for employment elsewhere.

Seems like it's a win situation to have the cap savings for the Skjei/McDonagh/ADA, Miller/Hayes/Zuccarello years. When we do take a cap hit, it's when Smith can be left go/traded at the deadline and when Lundqvist will for sure be taking a pay reduction seeing as he'll be 39.5 years old when the new contract starts. If there's a time and a place to give a hometown discount, I think it'll be at that age when he wants to stay with the team no matter what and have earned $100,000,000+ in his career.

That bad year is still only 1 mil more than carrying Staal's contract.....I say buy out

Hmm that's better than I thought. It'll be tight to the cap, but maybe the buyout is the best course of action. I still think Gorton may be forced to make a trade from an area of strength to patch a hole, but he's saavy enough to make it work. Like Tawnos said, we need those ELC guys to contribute big time.

Definitely some interesting times ahead in Rangerstown.

I can admit that I am not that worried about McDonaghs next contract. He isn't built like those types that lose a step that easily, Neidermayer played his by far best hockey way into his 30s. McD takes a lot of punishment, but OTOH the game isn't that extremely physical.

Staal playing 1st pair minutes? No thanks.

Staal playing any minutes?Just as bad.

Never worry about guys that can skate playing into their mid 30s it's guys like staal and girardi and Stepan and redden drury that were always borderline NHL level skaters in their 20s. They can't afford to lose a step. When they lose 2 they're not nhlers anymore. I think we were smart to move Stepan when we did imo he looked as slow as I've see seen him this past season. Always behind the play.

But mcdonagh? He'll play till he's 36 37 at the least.

I also would not buy out staal. I have no problem playing pionk in the ahl till he proves he's a pro player.

Holden is the move. Get him out of here and bring bozak in.

Bereglazov staal de Angelo are the three bottom 3 D men.

Kampfer is the 8th guy

Pionk Day and Graves in Hartford playing big time mins under a real coach.

Yeah, and I'd assume its the same with all players that enter the organisation. "Hi, welcome to the club. Play by our rules or you are out."

I think the culture must be different in Australia, you are all former criminals right so people must set limits right away?

Sorry I am just kidding. But I think it's a tool we use. For many it's jackpot to come here. DeAngelo is the type that knows he is getting a 2nd and 3rd chance and probably a 4th chance too. Life is fun and he is in no hurry, he is young. If he wants to get it done in NY though, there will be no 2nd chance. Detroit or Carolina or Winnipeg or Anaheim could be next. He had his fun, now it's time to get down to business. Not in a week or two. Is Graves or Drury calling him daily? Antony meet Adam, you will be seing a lot of him. Graves dad was an as tough as they come police officer who besides his own kids took in like 30 foster kids over the years when Adam was young. I am sure Adam knows a thing or two about setting people straight. Is Tony D a kid with problems? Nothing even close to real life problems. We will handle him, but I am sure there will be tough love too. The Islanders humiliated Ho Sang and cut him when he over slept, we don't do business like that. Be proactive.

K27- Yeah I agree about McD. But sure, any long contract is a risk.

Could McD fetch us a top forward? Who would that be? Seguin? Stamkos? MacKinnon? I am not sure if there is any obvious target...

This is true so dont aplogise... :)

Haha to be fair aren't you guys more of a band of drunken criminals? (joking) The Aussies have a good sense of humor about themselves, you have to love it, everyone takes themselves too serious nowadays, it's probably because the internet is so serious. lol

Anyway, looking at the #'s for Mika, it really looks like there's a deal to be made there. I don't really care if it's 5-6-7 years but the ultimate money has to be pretty reasonable given his demands vs. the Rangers.

Why not give Staal the option. Either get bought out this year or there is a distinct possibility he gets demoted. Remote him and you save just over $1m I believe. Which covers his replacement by one of the younger guys. Shortens his buyout and if the team doesn't need the cap space right now, it's not a bad move.

I get the feeling the Rangers know they may have 3-4 guys pushing for spots. Maybe Staal comes in to camp in great shape and a team is willing to trade for him at half cap hit

No way to buying out Staal, but Gorton should do his due diligence to find a taker for him. Obviously Staal has a NTC, but if they find a team that would take him (even if we have to eat some money), we should explore that avenue.

Unless they are dying for cap space because there's a center they need and they need that cap space to help fill that need then there's no reason to buy out Staal this season. Wait another season, try to trade him, see how the market develops.

No one is trading for Staal with his injury history, decline in play, actual cash owed and term, even if the Rangers retain half.

There is a gilt of potentially available D out there that will cost less and be better.

Rangers aren't in a position to add a sweetener for another team to take him.

Buy him out now in case a deal materializes for a top line center during the season.

What if he gets hurt? He's not going to retire if that happened. Way too much money to leave on the table and you can't buy him out.

Limits the Rangers ability to make moves in the off-season.
