Hayes has also spent 25% of his career ice time with Girardi. With Girardi he's got a 43.2 CF% and without 49.5. An absolutely huge difference. He won't have to deal with that this year.

In particular this past year Hayes with Girardi was a solid 37.6 lol

Completely different shifts. How many of the shifts with Girardi started in the D zone and how many shifts has he taken with Yandle and sometimes Boyle starting in the ozone?

Moving stepan opened up the space to sign Shattenkirk. Id say fixng the 1RHD was more important than fixing the 1C.

The difference from bumping everyone up on the RHD spot versus bumping everyone up on the Center spot is GINORMOUS.

I don't know if I agree with this but we will find out.

I honestly wonder how much of Stepan's "decline" is coupled with his worst shooting% season of his career. It's becoming a meme at this point

Most of it. Without question. I don't think it's totally unfair to see a dip in shooting % as a indicator of declining play.... but, I also don't think there's a ton of research that backs that up. Shooting % is a pretty fascinating thing.

Basically, I think Stepan's shooting % next year goes back up towards 10.7%, his career average. He might not put up 55 points though, just going from a team that scores a lot to a team that doesn't. Meaning like, he may shoot 10.7% again, but will he be in a position to fire 209 shots on goal? I don't know.

Zone starts are useless.

i guess the question is...would you trade Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta for.

Brendan Smith, Anthony DeAngelo, Lias Andersson, and Ondrej Pavelec...and about 2.5 million dollars in cap space.

I probably would.

I would not. NYR spent basically the entirety of my fandom looking for a 1C. Developed one. Got back a lotta maybes.

RD is significantly better. C significantly worse. Where will it end up in the standings? Not gonna be a needle mover in my view.

So your argument is that the Rangers, the 8th youngest team in the league currently, coming off of their 3rd consecutive 100+ point season, after completely revamping their defensemen from bottom 10 of the league to arguably top 5, and with the most cap space they have had in a long time, should tear it all down because winning now is invalid. I think you pretty much proved my point.

It is not "tear it all down"
and remember, whatever "it" was, it is insufficient to win.

It is a matter of building, adding, building.
You prove my point

I would have traded Miller and Hayes before Stepan, but for some reason 55 points for a defensively solid 1C who plays all situations is bad these days.

Here's the thing: If Stepan doesn't get 60 points in his career, people will say they were right all along and if he does, they will say it was because of the "change of scenery" which is BS

Stepan was declining. Big time. JT and Hayes have large upside still, which you ignore.
Acknowledge right to your opinion, but IMO moving Miller and KH while keeping Step would have been a HUGE mistake.
Glad to see GMJG is seeing it my way

I would have traded Miller before I traded Stepan if they have no plans to replace him or anything lined up, etc. that's just me tho.. Miller is cheaper at the moment sure, but don't act like his next contract is not going to exceed 4M+ which is still cheaper than Stepan but he can't play in every situation like Stepan, and he's been abysmal in the playoffs (which everyone ignores when talking about the playoffs).

if Anderssen turns into another Stepan at least tho, the trade would be a win for the Rangers. even tho it does nothing for the team this year.
Overrates DS, underrates JTM

Their center depth isnt great. Thats for sure. And 1 injury to the existing centers makes it devastatingly bad. With that said, i think it can be hidden with either Lias making the team, or moving Miller to Center, whom i actually like on Center, but thats just me....or even both.
this is accurate^

its true..keeping stepan over smith was a possibility.
personally...id rather have Smith, Shattenkirk, DeAngelo, and Lias Andersson

Than just Stepan and Shattenkirk.

But that's just me.

would have been horrible asset mgmt
remember Smith cost us a 2nd + a 3rd
would have been totally wasted if Smith was not signed

either you make that deal and commit to return of the UFA
or you don't and you keep the picks
but you don't trade for the guy, not sign him and lose the picks

I honestly wonder how much of Stepan's "decline" is coupled with his worst shooting% season of his career. It's becoming a meme at this point

For me that would be 0%. I would have been fine with him scoring 15 goals and 50 points while playing his normal game from the past.

Bern we did win. We had a winning record. We made the playoffs. We advanced in the playoffs. The only way you can say we did not win for the last 5 years is if you view only 1 single team as winning each year and all the other 29 teams as losers.

Eh, I know we've got not much else to discuss right now, but I feel like these debates are premature. I feel pretty strongly that we'll see at least one more move from Gorts before the season starts. Like I posted yesterday, three Rangers get big signing bonuses this summer; if last year is any indication, we may see a deal after 7/15 (the Brassard deal was 7/18). Or maybe it's something smaller, like signing Vesey's former linemate from Harvard. Either way, I'll be very surprised if we go into camp with a choice of (only) Miller/Andersson/DD as our 3C...

Probably not because it's the Coyotes. Interesting to see how Tocchet runs the team though. Maybe they won't be as bad as I think they'll be.

You forget all the good he did for the club? Including getting us assets on his way out.

Once a Ranger always a Ranger.

Forget no one.

Something, something it's a business.

For the 8 millionth time, winning the cup is probabilistic, not deterministic.

The roster last year was good enough to win, it just didn't happen to. Like 29 other rosters in the league. You can increase or decrease your chances within certain moves but there is no arbitrary cutoff for "good enough"

More and more I'm thinking we go into the season with this squad. That's ok. Can always make a trade for a center mid season. Nashville did.

Good thing that tomorrow is July 15th so hopefully something may happen soon. When's Mika's arbitration hearing?

Hayes at the 2C scares me, but the defense should be much better than last year.

Me too, but give him "the right" wingers and he should be fine.

Hayes clearly need wingers that drive "possession" (shots) and that play good D, so give him 2 of Kreider, Nash, Zuke, Buch or Fast on his wings and he should be fine.
