Speculation: Roster Building Thread - Off-season Part I

Kevin Allen used to cover The NHL for USA Today. He runs the DetroitHockeyNow website which covers the Red Wings. He knows that team very well. He has lived in Michigan forever. Allen was on Marek's show last week. Yzerman will re-sign Larkin. They won't re-sign Bertuzzi. Larkin wants to stay. Yzerman wants him to stay. They will get a new contract done.

It doesn't like Chychrun will be moving this summer

Up until recently, Armstrong had said that he intended to explore the trade route at the NHL Draft when more teams could get involved than were able to do so at the trade deadline. On Friday, Armstrong’s tune changed a bit when asked if there had been any movement on the Chychrun trade front.

“It hasn’t changed much,” Armstrong said. “Jakob is going to come back and play for us next year at this point. We’re always taking offers if it’s something that’s going to better our team. We’ll make those calls at the draft or any other time afterwards, but right now, he’s going to come back and play for us, and we expect him to be a big part of our team next year.”

Some of these teams want too much for their players. Cap space is tight. The cap will be flat for the next two seasons for sure maybe the next three seasons. Give us your 4 best prime cheap assets for one player. Not happening. Chychrun is signed for the next three seasons at a decent number and teams don't want to pay the bounty. Cost certainty. Teams are split on him.

A few of us have seen him play plenty, and he has definitely taken small steps ever year.

no it doesn’t. plenty of teams score off lost face offs. 95% of the game happens 5 seconds after a face off takes place. puck retrieval and set plays are way more important.

how many times have teams won clean face offs only to do nothing and have the puck go the other way? or lose a face off but win the puck in the ensuing scrum?

and what’s would Boyle do anyway? he’s a 4th liner and Goodrow is just as good at them. is he gonna win like one extra face off a game?

Why? For real its not an upgrade and theres a solid chance that he sits on his ass and does nothing for most of the season because he wont be healthy enough.

The only reason is that they want to give chytil a chance at 2c and want Monahan as a 3c insurance. Only makes sense if it's for 3c duties, costs nothing, and flames retain 50 percent.

Also could be the backfill 3c IF they trade chytil in a deal for another 2c. Think a lot of this is Drury getting a feel for everything around the league so he can make his chess board work

I totally agree. A PP is 120 seconds usually. If a team loses the face off clean for a dump out it often kills 20 seconds off that 120. Sometimes even more if they forecheck. I dont want Boyle but I do want a guy that can be counted on for winning a lot of draws that can play top 6 and/or kill PK.

Allen was speculating and at one point the idea of a larkin move was brought up based on timelines not matching.

Also chychrun has told the yotes he wants a trade. Armstrong isnt going to acknowledge it because he doesn't want to operate from a position of weakness, but he's getting traded sometime this summer.

All these "updates" are completely baseless. I've said this a bunch of times recently, Drury hasn't leaked anything at all since he's become GM.

These sites are just attaching the top UFAs to the Rangers for the clicks. That and likely reading boards like this to get their ideas and folks from here will click it because they are like "oh we talked about this on HF".

Truth is no one knows what Drury is going to do. Especially Staple.

Boooo. That would be some bs, trading Chytil. Like we didn't spend 4 years developing the kid.

He put many things together in the post season.

wouldn't shock me if Drury has some 2C in mind that nobody on here has even mentioned
