All I know is not giving kakko or laf pp1 time thru the first 3 years of their careers is taking money out of their pockets big time and I would not be surprised if their agents were knocking on drury’s door for trades at some point if it continues.
This x100.

The idea of keeping the kid line together and watching a top 6 succeed with Kravtsov is great.

But this has serious implications for Laff. He’s in a contract year coming off of a very solid playoff. Ceding first line minutes to Blais and Kravtsov doesn’t look good.

I just don't see that happening in the OHL unfortunately.

There were talks a while back about NHL teams getting some form of exceptional status for a limited number of OHL players to play in the AHL. Othmann would be a good candidate for this.

If anything, playing in the OHL where he physically dominates is just going to reinforce bad habits. He needs to be somewhere where he will be burned for those brain lapses.
Are you referring to the players who played in the AHL during covid when the OHL didn't play? That's the only exception I recall, and players had to play at least 20 games in the AHL during the prior year in order to get the exception. That's why Cuylle had to go back to the OHL. He only played 18 games in the AHL the year before.

I can't see the CHL agreeing to regular exceptions. Even 1 exception per team would make the rule moot. There are only a few players every year that might be in this situation and those are the players the CHL is trying to keep. Money is the only thing that would change the CHL's mind.

Ask tehm if they'd rather be on AZ so they can get all teh minutes they want. Most top picks are not on strong contenders. Sorry boys. If the Rangers win, they get their money.

It comes up every year:

What leverage does the CHL actually have here?

They represent a free farm system for the NHL. No junior hockey and it changes the development dynamic of the game dramatically.
Plus the players are under contract to the CHL teams. I don't know if that's a fight the CHL would win, but it might not be something the NHL would want to take a chance on.

If Lafreniere could play RW he’d be in top six. He isn’t ceding minutes, he just isn’t playing out of position.

Also, Drury was AGM when Gorton was here. I don't think he envisioned his #1 overall pick being relegated to the 3rd line with no PP time. He left the two top line wing spots open this summer and I highly doubt he envisioned Blais being put there instead of the two players he wanted and literally everyone in the hockey world expected to be in those spots.

Trocheck... Drury had to sign or trade for a center. That is what it is. But that open spot on PP1 left by Strome, Drury probably envisioned Lafreniere there as well.

If you don’t think Drury has discussions with Gallant about their team visions, I don’t know what to tell you. If Gallant is actively going against Drury, and causing problems for Drury, he’ll replace Gallant. Drury is also the one who traded for Blais, so maybe Drury sees Blais as a top 6 or 9 forward who was just buried on a deep Blues team.

I’d like to see Laf and Kakko in the top 6, but it’s preseason and I have zero issues with trying out different line combinations to see what works. If the kid line ends up sticking, I’m good with that, especially if the team is winning and playing well.

Its this entirely. That being said, the knock on gallant in both florida and vegas was that he refused to look at advanced numbers and wanted more say on roster decisions.
But Drury and him had to have been talking this off season, he likely asked trocheck vs copp.
Thats not to say gallant has any final say on contracts or trades, but gallant is the one who needs to use the tools given. If he knows them, input can be helpful.

Drury likely talked and said "if we want to win a cup the kids NEED to develop. That either means fitting them into the top 6 however, or giving them enough time at 5v5 that they develop."
It looks like gallant thinks that they're existing chemistry and the chemistry of the other top lines was worth not messing with them.

If gallant splits 5v5 time equally and relegates the 4th line to maybe 5 minutes a game?

The kids will get plenty of ice time vs weak defenseman who they could feast on.

The NHL-CHL-AHL is never changing the rule regarding players with CHL eligibility playing in the AHL.
And its actually quite rational and prudent, despite fans want for different, when a guy like Othmann has a season like last year's.
Some say 'nothing left to prove'
But just as rational is 'can he do it again, with added attention"
And he's still only 19, good for his dev arc, to carry a leadership role

That makes sense. They also have a business to run too for their leagues. So losing their top players is not good for them.

Where are people getting this from. When has Gallant ever gave any indication of doing this? He's never done it. He's not just suddenly going to evenly distribute ice time. Even when the Kid Line was dominant in the playoffs he limited their ice time.

I guess it will test the theory of can you win a Cup with any player on your team making more than 10 plus million, just like the Rangers with Bread.
This is not just you, but the talk about the "a cup hasn't been won with a player making more than 10mil" always frustrates me. Instead of millions, we should be talking about percentage of cap. And the cup has been won with some players having a pretty high percentage. When the Penguins won in 2016, Malkin was making what would be the equivalent of 11m today.

It gets extremely hard, no doubt about that. In order to win a cup, you basically need 2 or 3 bargain contracts and some guys on ELCs contributing.

Gallant absolutely split ice time in vegas.
