After thinking about it (and reading feedback to this discussion) my thoughts are:

Trochek on PP1 because he’s not afraid of getting in front of the net or mucking for pucks behind the goal. Better face off guy than Zibanejad and frees him up to be in the position where he scores most.

That being said, PP2 needs to have more looks and longer than :15 second shifts to ever become effective. Gallant and co. were guilty of this all season and the playoffs.

Trouba, LaF, Kakko, Chytil & Kravtsov with at least :45-60 second shifts.

PP2 does not need more time. The Rangers first unit is in the very upper crust of the league. They shouldn't play less.

PP2 does need Trouba to come off. He's a huge reason they were a terrible unit. Braindead shot selection and has no ability to walk the line and open up lanes. He absolutely butchered it all year.

I’m not saying you are wrong but if that is the case again this year, we will see how contract negotiations go with Lafreniere.

With Stutzle PP usage I have little doubt he’d be in-line for a Stutzle extension. He and his agent will be very aware of that.

I do think there is a chance they sign him to repeated 1 year deals. I also don’t think they are going to wait until the offseason to bring him in. I think they will trade the latter of the (2) 1sts for Kane this deadline.

Othmann can wait 1 more year. It wont destroy his development.

Who is battling down low with those 4 forwards? Kreider? No. Panarin?? No. Zibanejad? Maybe a little. LaF? Not as well as Trochek or Kakko. Honestly, I’d rather have Kakko there than LaF.

But last year it was Kreider down low, Zibanejad at the one timer spot, Fox running the show, and Panarin and Strome, and that PP was lethal.

Why is there some need to add another down low guy or another face off guy, etc? The PP1 was great with Strome being a non-factor.

Lafreniere will be an upgrade over Strome at that PP1 spot because he's more skilled and it will help his long term offensive development which is critical for us.

Trochek can win faceoffs but other than that he'll play similarly to Kreider. I don't see how he helps PP1 or the team long term, other than the coach "trusting" the veteran not to have the mistakes and growing pains associated with a young player.

It's really tough to do future projections because this is such an important year coming up. How it turns out will likely define whether NYR continue to try to push forward with the veteran core they have, or start to shed major pieces.

If NYR are like a first round exit this season, pretty much all bets are off. Fox and Miller will stay no matter what but we could see a wholesale reformation of the team

The kid forwards were the reason why the Rangers went as far as they did in the playoffs. The Rangers would have lost in the first round to Pittsburgh. The kid forwards were the Rangers best line. Gallant should have played them more in some games but Gallant kept relying on Strome's line which struggled.

I saw some numbers on Kane. They weren't good. His first half last season was not very good.



His second half was better. He will be 35 years old.

The bigger issue is the kids on D. The Rangers will need to add an experienced veteran D at the deadline.

The kids at forward has shown they can play in the playoffs.

The Rangers are winning a Cup with some combination of Jones,Hajek and Robertson as their 6/7 D?

Everyone links Kane to the Rangers. Everyone linked Kadri to the Rangers. Frank Seravalli said the Rangers love Kadri. They love his compete level. Brooks jumped on board and proposed a sign and trade with Kadri.
A few weeks ago, Frank said the Rangers will acquire Kane and re-sign him. How are the Rangers paying Kane? How were the Rangers paying Kadri?

The Rangers can add Kane and they will lose with that defense. They don't have enough cap space to add multiple pieces like they did last March.

They are going to trade Kakko, duh.

I was going to comment on this as well. They have professional audio, they have what looks like 5 different camera angles. Why not just broadcast the damn games?

Instead of talking about what will will need at the TDL, before the first preseason game, the NYR should be waiting to see how the season shakes out to see what or who we actually NEED if anything...
I see neither Kane nor Chychrun as a NEED, and most likely not worth what either acquisition would cost this team's future unless it GUARANTEED a Cup that would be unlikely without them. That's the balance: how much does it REALLY increase our chances as opposed to what it does to future chances... something we can't possibly know right now.
