I think that once a forward hits 25-26 they pretty much are who they are unless they are a really late bloomer. For defenseman and goalies you probably give them an extra year or two 27-28

I think about the players below and sometimes we forget how young they all are and how if all of them even take incremental steps in their development each year over the next 2-4 seasons - its scary to think what the ceiling could be for this club.

Shesterkin - 26

Fox - 24
Lindgren - 24
Miller - 22
Schneider - 21

Chytil - 23
Kravstov - 22

Kakko - 21
Lafreniere - 20

If the team is as abysmal at 5v5 again this year I think you have to consider asking them to waive and then trading either a Zibanejad or a Panarin or something. The team can't just be lethal on the PP and have amazing goaltending and then mail it in 5v5.

We are banking on swapping out noted specialist Ryan Strome for well-rounded Vincent Trocheck and then the development of the kids. Problem is, despite lacking offensive finishing, Kakko was already a big plus defensively and with possession. It can't all be blamed on Lafreniere and Chytil. Zibanejad and Panarin can't just be PP stat compilers, they have to drive and carry play at 5v5 for what they are being paid.

This is just my opinion, but I think a lot of our problems at even strength came from poor puck distribution and transition play- which starts with our defensemen. There were games when getting through the neutral zone with possession looked impossible, and how many odd man rushes did we have last season? It felt like not a lot.

Replacing Nemeth with Jones should hopefully improve distribution.

I wouldn’t think a bottom 6 forward who doesn’t score or play special teams has much value but you only need one believer.
Bottom 6 forward? Hasn't shown that here, if you couldn't keep a job in our bottom 6 last year before the trade deadline there isn't much hope of getting anything in return. I'd expect the exact type of deal that brought him here, tweener for tweener.

I agree with all of this however our wingers, be it the coaches fault or the players, seemed to be unavailable or covered for a breakout which hemmed us in a lot. It was painful to watch at times, they were either too close to the defender or way too close to the corner. I also think our 5 on 5 problems are because we don't simplify things in their end, we're trying to run a 5 on 5 powerplay. If you rarely use the points teams are just collapsing and plugging the middle, we need more low to high plays.

The fact that Gauthier couldn't get a single game in the playoffs probably means the coach doesn't rate him that highly. They really did go with like every other option they had. Plus I thought he requested a trade?

I like him but it doesn't make a ton of sense that he's still here. Maybe he'll be shipped out in a week or two, and they kept him along just in case he shows up to camp with the big cartoon lightbulb above his head switched on. Then again he was really good in last year's preseason, it forced them to make weird roster moves with cascading effects (Kravtsov), and he didn't do a whole lot/clearly wasn't trusted.

After thinking about it (and reading feedback to this discussion) my thoughts are:

Trochek on PP1 because he’s not afraid of getting in front of the net or mucking for pucks behind the goal. Better face off guy than Zibanejad and frees him up to be in the position where he scores most.

That being said, PP2 needs to have more looks and longer than :15 second shifts to ever become effective. Gallant and co. were guilty of this all season and the playoffs.

Trouba, LaF, Kakko, Chytil & Kravtsov with at least :45-60 second shifts.

Z alone was 54% on the powerplay last season so...
Yeah, I deleted that. Not quick enough though ;)

I don’t love Zibanejad on draws when he’s the guy everyone is setting up for the one timer.

Why?

But you are then taking off your PP1 for 45 seconds of time, which it can handle, simply to get Laf and Kakko time.

Just play Lafreniere on PP1. Trochek for Lafreniere doesn't lose any effectiveness.

Swapping out the whole PP1 for PP2 definitely loses effectiveness.

The only way Lafreniere becomes a star in this league is either by Gallant being fired or requesting a trade. He will never get the PP1 time virtually all NHL stars need to become stars. Everyone gushes over Stutzle, but Lafreniere was the better 5v5 player, the difference was Stutzle was spoon fed PP1 time and Lafreniere was denied even the slightest chance to be on PP1.

Been saying it. Kreids has to go after this season. Laf and Kak need to be on PP1 and Laf has a higher ceiling than Kreids ever had. That spot on line 1 should go to Laf after this year.

Still not buying Laf as a RW. If he proves me wrong, that's fantastic too.

I don’t think it’s all on the defenseman but it’s compounded with our center play and system. It’s antiquated.

We’ve improved on personnel but the system and structure needs to be improved upon. You can’t beat a trap, in the neutral zone, by banging the puck off the boards and stretch passes. It also doesn’t help when you’re one and done once you get the zone entry.

There’s many areas for improvement… which bodes well for us, considering how far we went with all of these “flaws”

Trocheck, easy answer.

I look forward to him signing a one year minimum deal with us in the 2023 offseason.

Lafreniere Zibanejad Kreider
Panarin Trocheck Kane
Kravtsov Chytil Kakko

Yikes, sorry Othmann. One more year till you can break in, enjoy Hartford.

I thought we weren’t engaging anymore? 😉

I do think there is a chance they sign him to repeated 1 year deals. I also don’t think they are going to wait until the offseason to bring him in. I think they will trade the latter of the (2) 1sts for Kane this deadline.

Othmann can wait 1 more year. It wont destroy his development.

Who is battling down low with those 4 forwards? Kreider? No. Panarin?? No. Zibanejad? Maybe a little. LaF? Not as well as Trochek or Kakko. Honestly, I’d rather have Kakko there than LaF.

There is not any decline showing with Kane. That’s just not true. He was never some defensive stalwart. And he is by no means the worst defensive player in the league, thats just hyperbole.

If you look at his offensive numbers, over the course of his 15 year career with 1 being a shortened season in 20-21 and 19-20 ending early, he just had his 3rd highest point total with 92 points. That is a 1.17 PPG production. In the shortened 20-21 season before that he was at a 1.17 PPG. In 19-20 he was at 1.2 PPG. Those are his age 31-33 seasons. And his best year was the one before those in 18-19 with 110 points and a 1.35 PPG. This guy is hardly “declining” or showing signs of slowing down. He is a true competitor and an elite one of that. He has never been some prolific goal scorer. Over the course of his 15 year career he averages 28 goals per year. He scored 26 last season. He has been predominantly in the 20-30 goal range with the exception of 2 seasons where he eclipsed 40 and 3 were he hit 30+. His career Goals Per Game is 0.38. Last year was 0.33.

I am on the fence about adding Kane. I am leaning towards yes go after him at the deadline. Because no matter how much the kids improve they are not Patrick Kane and what he can do offensively. He takes on the pressure and allows the kids to fly under the radar while giving us even more scoring depth. This is a 3x Stanley Cup Winner.

Arthur Staple was on SiriusXM yesterday afternoon and whether you believe he has heard things or not, he was hinting that Patrick Kane is going to be the Rangers #1 target at the deadline. He said the two things “he has heard” from other people is 1) Kane loves the spotlight and 2) He loves playing with Artemi Panarin. Panarin-Trochek-Kane could be a lethal line.
The kid forwards were the reason why the Rangers went as far as they did in the playoffs. The Rangers would have lost in the first round to Pittsburgh. The kid forwards were the Rangers best line. Gallant should have played them more in some games but Gallant kept relying on Strome's line which struggled.

I saw some numbers on Kane. They weren't good. His first half last season was not very good.

His second half was better. He will be 35 years old.

The bigger issue is the kids on D. The Rangers will need to add an experienced veteran D at the deadline.

The kids at forward has shown they can play in the playoffs.

The Rangers are winning a Cup with some combination of Jones,Hajek and Robertson as their 6/7 D?

Everyone links Kane to the Rangers. Everyone linked Kadri to the Rangers. Frank Seravalli said the Rangers love Kadri. They love his compete level. Brooks jumped on board and proposed a sign and trade with Kadri.
A few weeks ago, Frank said the Rangers will acquire Kane and re-sign him. How are the Rangers paying Kane? How were the Rangers paying Kadri?

The Rangers can add Kane and they will lose with that defense. They don't have enough cap space to add multiple pieces like they did last March.

But I think they can address both at the deadline. Kane and a depth Veteran D. What is the veteran D costing? A 3rd? A 4th? 3rd and a B prospect that nets us a guy who is a borderline top 4 DMan? The Rangers have the flexibility to make these things happen.

With Kane, sure there is a risk with the age but he has yet to show some sharp decline. His shooting % was down and yet he was only 2 goals off his career yearly average. Even if he dropped to a 75-85 point pace next season that would still be outstanding production. And I do believe that even with a bump in production from the kids, a 75-85 point pace from Kane will be more than what Lafreniere/Kakko/Kravtsov will be on pace for next to Panarin-Trochek. There is no denying the kids were hugely impactful in the playoffs and they can continue to be even with Kane slotting in at RW2.

I'd see if Chara would be willing to come back and take a one year deal. He could play down low and in front of the net on the PP.

Trocheck will be in the bumper/high slot on PP1

He thrives in the slot, roaming in the chaos. Consider he will be Panarin's new best friend, it is what it is.

Rookie cuts are today right?
i doubt they cut any drafted kids so soon, unless someone looks totally out of place

they could re-assign the guys on AHL deals to Pack Camp, but that doesn't actually exist yet

today is just physicals and off ice testing stuff. No one is getting "cut" today

usually they do like a week or so of camp and then cut the extras and send back any just drafted players etc. So like, maybe monday before the first preseason game or something
