If Marner wants to get paid commensurate to his teammates and his peers in the game, he would absolutely sign an Offer Sheet with the Islanders at 12.5

Leafs I have no doubt would NOT match that.

Leafs aren't letting marner walk to the Islanders. They'll trade nylander if they have to.

Not sure that's true, considering that Lee didn't get a fair offer until after Panarin signed with the Rangers.

Not sure that isn't true. Neither of us can definitively say because neither of us know. They didn't sign Varlamov, either, until after Panarin was off the table.

5 years for $10,568,588 AAV

It keeps the compensation below the final threshold, which will force Dubas to match

...that just backs up what I'm saying.

Neither one of us is sure, but if you look at the order of events, it pretty clearly says one thing and not the other.

I dont think trading Nylander addresses the issue of having 35 million tied up in just three players for the next 5 years

Not to mention that both Marner and Mstthews would not hit UFA the same summer.

I disagree with your perspective on this. One doesn't mutually exclude the other. Let's just move along since neither of us know shit about Lou's plans.

Edited to add a Lou quote:

"We're very pleased with the end result of this window because it was our intention to sign all our players who potentially were free agents ," Lamoriello said. "We were able to get a couple of them earlier than later, so we feel good because we feel very good about our team. We feel very good about our core players and having them all back for the most part is very important."

That's the cost of being good. You could do a lot worse than having Matthews marner and Tavares on your team for the next 5 years.

I don't think marner would sign that...I think he wants at least what Matthews is making...if not more.

And what leverage does Marner have? He isn't arbitration eligible, and no team is offering him more, because no team gives up four 1st rounders.

But having that much cap space tied to three players (forwards specifically) will never allow you to be good enough to win

I dunno...wasn't the same thing said when the penguins gave big contracts to Crosby Malkin Fleury and Letang?

You just need to do a better job of filling in around them.

Marner at that contract fits the maple leafs time frame.

Where the leafs have screwed up is paying ancillary players and not doing a good job drafting outside of their top 10 picks.

And not focusing enough attention on putting together a good D to go along with their great forwards.
