I love the @Ola plan to buy out all 3.

It's crazy and seems like such a bad idea but at the same time you've gotten rid of the black cloud hanging over the defense.

Don't think there is any way they do this but it'd be nice to have a completely clean slate in that regard.

He does bring up some valid points.

I still hold hopes that they will realize that it’s best to deal with this once and for all and buy out all three of Shatty, Smith and Staal, and not bridge all RFAs.

Do we really need two more RFAs in two years? We already have at least Lias, Howden, Chytil and Hajak becoming RFAs in two years. Three more in Buch, TDA and Lemieux.

It’s like we — never — learn. We only invest in big name vets from other teams. Why rebuild if we never will invest in the homegrown kids?

Buch wants a bridge deal it’s not the rangers. And lemieux isn’t a player that you lock up long term. And DeAngelo needs to prove he can be consistent. Keeping these deals down is taking advantage of way the cab works...

That is short sighted. They get arbitration rights and from that point they get all the leverage. By 26-27 they will become UFAs unless we give them UFA money long past their prime, or we have to trade them for a subpar return. And yes, objectively a late 1st for a strong NHLer is a bad trade.

Yzerman locked up JT Miller and got tremendous value for him (Vancouver’s 1st for Christ sake). Gorton pushes the players to the verge of UFA and get crap for them. Smart strategy!

Yzerman didn't make that trade, he was already in Detroit.

Benning does dumb things and is going to completely f*** up what should have been a pretty clean transition. We should have taken advantage of him already.

They have the most underrated young core of players in the league but he's augmented said talent by overpaying for 2nd tier (or lower) talent both on the trade and UFA market.

I'd love to to see CK flanking Kadri in CO. I'm sure it's been discussed in here, but what would a reasonable return be from our end (no need to be condescending, I'm a flower lol).

I don’t follow, if Buch wanted 10m per would we give it to him? Who cares what he wants?

The Qualifying Offers we have made could only be signed before 15 July, they have now expired. The players without arbitration rights can now only sign what we put in-front of them or play in another league until they become UFAs at 27 y/o. We have all the leverage at this point. That is what other GMs around the league is using. You don’t pay Bucbnevich as a 70 pts player of TDA as a player that consistently plays at the peak of their potential. You pay them for what they have proven that they are able to consistently provide. I don’t think anyone doubt that Buch can be a 0.5 PPG player. If you give him a contract reflecting that for a number of years it’s fair. If he provides more, it’s a win for us. Same with TDA. Look around the league, 9/10 times that is what other teams are doing if they have cap space. And it’s thanks to those contracts the better teams can contend.

It’s now we have leverage, once the player get arbitration rights we have very little leverage. It’s just very short sighted to use that leverage to get a cheap bridge contract. We are rebuilding, we shouldn’t sign those type of deals now.

Yeah sorry, should have been “and Tampa gets tremendous value for him”.

Who cares what he wants? You understand that the player has to agree to the deal right? If he doesn’t want a long term deal you can’t make him take it.

I feel like we currently lack depth at forward and defense, but that could change quickly and dramatically depending on the progression of our younger players (and what comes of any impending deals).
Was thinking exactly the same thing.

Yes everything is based on If’s and Assumptions, but that is part of the projections game.

If Kravtsov and Kakko can perform well enough, not even be stars, but produce, then it automatically makes you deeper because it slides other players down and/or keeps them from playing music chairs. Players know their roles. I know we dont WANT Lias to be a 3rd line center in his career BUT for next season he could make for a very, very solid one. Him or Howden.

We need the progression to happen.

My sentiment as well and given how many of these prospects we have and how high their ceilings are - there’s almost a guaranteed depth there, both up front and on defense.

We got a Winnipeg 1st and Brendan Lemieux for Kevin Hayes when he was having a great season. I expect us to get a low 1st from somebody, but I'm not expecting a better throwin piece than Lemieux

I guess they did the Trouba deal at this time because it doesn't affect the buyout window. Buchnevich's arbitration hearing is the later one, 29 July. Were Trouba's arbitration hearing the later one they probably would have waited, I suppose.

Buying out Staal and Smith really wouldn’t be the worst idea. Rip the band aid off. The team has young players to fill those holes on ELC’s so the dead cap won’t be as big of a deal. The dead cap next year won’t hurt that bad as no one needs a new contract.

F it, if we're going to buy 2 of them out, do all 3.

@Ola plan all the way. Go big or go home.

It also makes the buying out of defensemen Kevin Shattenkirk (two more years at $6.65 million per) and Brendan Smith (two more years at $4.35 million per) a lot more real. If Smith clears waivers and heads to AHL Hartford, then the Rangers would save $1.25 million against the cap.

https://nypost.com/2019/07/19/jacob-trouba-deal-puts-rangers-deeper-into-salary-cap-hell/

The NHL minimum salary increased $50,000 this season from $650,000 to $700,000.

Add $375,000.

$1,075,000.

It was $1,025,000 last season.

$1.25M?

These Post guys don't the rules.

Brooks is proposing the Rangers trade Shattenkirk to LA for Brown and then buying out Brown so the Rangers can pay Kreider.

Brett is lost too.

I don't think there's even a remote chance that Staal gets bought out. Smith? Sure, but not Staal.

Unless JD brought his Columbus analytics department with him, I agree.

I mean he should get bought out if they're buying anyone out, but the FO loves him for whatever reason.

Trades and buyouts coming soon. We’ve rehashed the obvious possibilities but I wonder if there is a surprise move that might happen? (Don’t ask me what that could be)
The surprise buyout would be Strome b/c it's so cheap.

EDIT: forgot about the salary minimum. so womp womp.
