New York, here I come

Brooklyn?

He doesn't backheck and was flamed in GDTs but Torts praised his compete level/work ethic and kept playing him

Is it? The Rangers have been reported to be around the $11ish range. 13.5%

They also wont get into a bidding war ( allegedly )

edit- I still dont understand the lack of trust for Gorton.
Well, everyone seems to be taking about 12m. So that's where I went.
And I do trust Gorton. This is a chat about Panarins hypothetical contract. At least that's what I thought.

You said read GDTs instead of watching highlights.

In any event, GDTs are already an emotionally charged place, and during the playoffs only moreso, and god knows who is posting in there. I’m not sure why it should be a measure of anything.

You don’t want to sign him, fine. There are reasons not to and I get that. But him not being an effective playoff player to this point is simply not true.
I never suggested he's not an effective playoff player. I questioned his work ethic when the games mattered most. I'm not the only one either.

I don't advocate the Rangers getting into a bidding war over Panarin but I also don't advocate 1.5 mill per year being the deal breaker on an indisputable top 15 forward in the league at absolute worst.

This is my whole dilemma.

Say I don't want to go over 11. If he says he'll sign here for 12 am I really going to say I can't do the extra 1M when that's the difference between me rostering like Jimmy Vesey or Brendan Lemieux in salary? Or that amount is the Beleskey dead cap hit? Or carrying a 22 man roster instead of a 23 man roster?

I’ll take the effective playoff guy over the guy who appears to be working hard.

LOL, so would I. But at that price tag I guess I don't want to ever have to question someone's work ethic. I know he's been training hard this summer though.

Gomez was a 27 year old, 70P player who we signed for 14.3% of the cap. Do you feel he was overpaid? I did.

Panarin in his NHL career: .99 points per game
Gomez in his NHL career 2003-2007 (final 4 years): .91 points per game

Gomez was not nearly as dominant as Panarin.

Especially at even strength, Panarin is the superior player

What makes you think that Gomez is a good comparison to Panarin?
He’s a horrible comparison. Gomez was a complementary player with above average play making skills. AP drives play. When he’s on the ice you notice because he’s dictating the pace that the game is played at. Gomez never had that feature to his game. AP is in another tier above Gomez without question.

Kucherov makes 9.5M and is coming off back to back 100P seasons.

Kane makes 10.5M and is coming off a 100P season.

Gaudreau makes 6.75M and is coming off a 99P season.

MacKinnon makes 6.3M and is coming off a 99P season.

Crosby makes 8.7M and is coming off a 100P season.

Giroux makes 8.275M and is coming off a 85P season (102P last season).

Panarin @12M, or 11M is just straight up stupid. He's not a 12M player for starters. Despite the space we have now, we'll have to do a lot of maneuvering to fit him in. Some of you guys can't resist temptation. He's a very good player but he's not in the same tier as most of the guys you mentioned above. But, he'll get paid more than all of them.

Look at MacKinnon and Gaudreau's contracts. That's what you want. Top end production at a bargain. I understand not every team is that lucky, but the point still remains.

Only way you get MacKinnon’s deal is to draft an elite player who lies dormant for his ELC years. Avs got lucky he exploded in year 4 instead of year 3. Rantanen is not a better player than MacK but he’s gonna make more money than him. It’s all about timing.

Same age. Slightly less production. Similar cap%.
Slightly less production is an understatement. Gomez averaged 67 points per 82 games in his Devils career while till this point Panarin has averaged 81. Panarin has also been in the NHL a lot less time than Gomez.

SA16 has on multiple occasions posted comparables that shows how well Panarin's style ages.
