I think you gotta see what Kane and Panarin can do together. They were just too monstrous when they last played together to not see if they can find that chemistry again. Give Tarasenko some more time on the top line. I think this is a Tarasenko problem more than anything at this point. He just needs to get back to shooting everything. The only way I mess with the kid line is if the top line can't gel and Kane/Panarin still have magic together. At that point I'd be willing to swap Kakko/Tarasenko, but I have a feeling that the kid line is going to be huge again in the playoffs and Kakko is the main engine in the offensive zone.

Kane > Copp
Tarasenko > Vatrano
Mikkola >= Braun
Motte = Motte
Chytil 2023 > Chytil 2022
Kakko 2023 > Kakko 2022
Lafreniere 2023 > Lafreniere 2022
Vesey > Reaves

Motte-Goodrow-Vesey, all three of those guys are pretty good defensively so we finally have a 4th line the coach should have 100% confidence throwing out late in the game if needed. No need to shorten the bench = fresher players for a deep playoff run. The only thing that 4th line is missing is a faceoff ace.

Laying in bed and this thought randomly came to my head, does anyone else remember like 5 years ago we signed Kovalchuk? Or had agreed to sign him despite not being allowed to? Then it fell through or something? Am I high? LOL

Forgot about this. Vaguely recalled it after reading your post and apparently it was set to happen but never did

With 3 games in 4 days, I think the easiest thing to do Thursday is put Kane with Panarin. There is no practice time at all. At least he has played with Panarin.

After these three games, the Rangers are off for 4 days. Is that there bye week? If it is not, that is where you practice with different lines, unless it just works these games.

The biggest thing will be PP1 and PP2. Kane is playing the half wall. Bread will get the other. Mika is going to be the bumper. He will have to adjust.

Someone will lose their time on PP2. Trocheck could be a candidate, but he wins draws. One of Lafreniere or Kakko is losing their PP2 time. Maybe it will fluctuate between them and Chytil.

These are somewhat crazy thoughts cause you have this much talent on your roster at one time where your PP2 will have Tarasenko with three of Trocheck, Chytil, Kakko, and Lafreniere. And what else could happen is that PP1 is that good, they never see the ice.

It's going to be Lafreniere and it's the right decision. I don't think it should be Kakko. Everyone else is a lock.

Aside from the penalties, Mikkola has fit in the most seamlessly here. I like quite a lot about his game to be honest. His skating and physicality is much better than what Braun was able to give us last year, and I was fine with what Braun gave as a bottom pairing rental.

Hoping that Tarasenko turns it on down the stretch and for the playoffs, but I think his floor is playoff Rick Nash, who was a fine solid hockey player but not a gamebreaker nor stud. Which, if our other stars play like stars, should be fine.

Waive Harpur cause he likely clears and deal for a cheap D for depth ?

I was bored on CapFriendly, trade Harpur on Friday for any of the following works, not saying some of these guys are worth it, but pretty much guys that could move.

Number in () is minimum retention you would need to still be under the cap, plus Harpur being off the roster either in a trade or waived off the roster by Friday.

Seeler (no retention)
Braun (13%)
TVR (8%)
Stanley (3%)
Holden (33%)

Kulikov would need 50% retained, and then another 25% retained from another team, that's not worth it. Beaulieu works with no retention, but I'm going to pretend I didn't bring that up, because he is dreadful.

Great the deal is finally done. Now we can relax somewhat.

Besides Tank and Showtime being world class talents, they have 4 rings between them. That shouldn't get overlooked. Both are bigtime playoff performers.

Adding Motte gives us more options on the penalty kill. And Mikkola can flat-out fly for a big man. What a surprise he has been. The pickups this year are as good if not better than last year. Drury has raised some eyebrows. Never thought he would be so adept at pulling the strings.

Mott solidifies a solid defensive shutdown 4th line. With him, Vesey and Goodrow, you welcome them up against top lines. And all play the PK as well. So all 3 will continue to get valuable minutes.

Capfriendly has the wrong numbers.

The brutal reality is that the Rangers have gotten a lot better and only gave up the following of their own picks: a 2024 4th rounder, a 2023 2d rounder turning into a 2024 top 10 protected 1st rounder or unprotected 2025 1st rounder, and 2025 3d and 4th rounders. I'm sure you nerds will correct me if I got it wrong.

The retained all their prospects and young stars as well as the 2023 1st and maybe the 2023 2d if they make it to the conf finals. Think about this shit, they even retained hopefuls like Zac Jones and Roberstson much less guys like Cuylle and Othmann. Don't even f***ing think about Miller, KK, Chytil, Laf.

This is how you rebuild, protect the future and load up for a Cup run. I know some of it is luck, but Drury has run a motherf***ing masterclass here on how to do that.

Drury has been impressive. You can't blame him for wanting an available Patrick Cane, or for that matter, Tarasenko. How this will play out in the road for the Cup remains to be seen. Last year, Drury bulked up on getting bigger and stronger, with players who got in people's faces. Revo, Hunt, Blais, and Goodrow all started out of training camp. Only Goodrow remains. Players are gonna need to pick up the slack come playoffs. Motte, Goodrow, K'Andre, Laffy, Schneider, Trocheck, Mikkola, and Kreider will need to lay the body and finish their checks.

The good news is,... we have only been out hit 3 times in the last 11 games. So maybe Drury saw this.

We have a very competitive roster but it's very thin. Hopefully Lindgren will be back soon.

Edit. If Lindgren would go to LTIR how about going for Chychrun? 23 1st + 24 or 25 1st (whichever we have available from Kane Trade) + Jones + Berard for Chychrun 50% retained. Trade Chychrun for two firsts in the off-season.

Honestly, what teams can sustain injuries?
