I see the mentions from you and bobbop, but not about the content of the athletic article.

Weird, was quoted in my post:

"What about Thomas? It was not the breakout season he had in mind, in part because of injuries. But is there space for him in the top six if they’re playing Schenn in the middle? If not, does Thomas want to be here? The Blues might want to find out what’s available while the 21-year-old’s potential is still high."

listen i might have questioned Thomas as a player because i didn’t thoroughly look into his numbers but he is absolutely not a “soft more of the same” player. he’s all hustle and brings speed and grit for sure in how he battles for the puck

i swear some of you saw he was 6’0” and less than 200 lbs and just assumed he was soft

Sounds like Rutherford?s personal feelings on the matter, not inside info.

Hard to say, I don't read him regularly. If that was a Brooks article I would probably read a little more into that than just writer speculation. For context the section that bit was in was titled "Any trades to be had?" and the only two names mentioned were Thomas and Dunn.

I'm not opposed to Thomas, and like the talent, but he and Chytil are kind of in the same boat and I get the sense the preference is to stabilize the position rather than try to develop a pair of 21 year old who might haven't quite figured out the center position yet.

As Mac pointed out, Thomas has been more of a RW and right now it feels like the Rangers are probably more interesting in using one of their RWs to solve other concerns.

But Dunn is someone they've asked about in the past --- so it's quite possible the Rangers ask about both. But my gut has some doubts.

What is even wrong with another Chytil? People have this insane dislike of "redundancy" when all that generally means is having another good player. If Chytil is a good player why wouldn't I want someone else just like him?
You can’t have a team full of identical player types even if all of those players are good. You need some guys to transition the puck, some to distribute the puck, some to shoot the puck, and some to do the dirty work.

I’m not saying that RT = FC, but you definitely need to have a balanced, diversified roster to succeed.

I can't imagine Hextall and Burke firing Sullivan just because Jarry is a disaster, if they lose this series its more on the FO not bringing someone in at the deadline than it is Sullivan.

Regarding Robert Thomas, do we think hes a C long term?
Well they did trade for Jeff Carter or do you mean they should have brought in a goalie? I think since winning their last Cup the Penguins have gotten sub .900 save percentage goaltending in the playoffs. Hard to win with goalies playing like that. Sullivan is something like 3-14 in his last 17 playoff games as coach which doesn't help but I can't pin all their problems on him. Too bad for Pittsburgh that things went bad between Kessel and Pens management because they had a real advantage having a playoff beast like him playing on their third line with Hagelin and Bonino. They did a good job bringing in more speed in Kapanen and Tanev but neither guy is the offensive player Kessel was for them.

Uh, to keep this on topic regarding the Rangers I like Thomas as a player but it depends on what it would cost the Rangers.

The St. Louis thing has a lot of levels to consider. The Blues have $66MM in contracts for next year, a boatload of RFAs and UFAs, expansion draft issues and an underperforming team. Bennington’s new contract kicks in next year. It’s a team that was built to win now and didn’t.

If Thomas is available, there must be a back story. A year ago he was untouchable. If that is changed, you bet I am interested. He was blocked at center by Schenn, ROR, Bozek and Barbashev.

I think Blues will cut Bozak loose and they stand to lose Barbashev to Seattle, if not Dunn. Schenn has often slotted at W. I wish they would move on from Binnington

Broberg
Bouchard
Holloway
Yamamoto
Those 4 for sure have value, they have some interesting cheap bottom 6 guys as well. They are finally getting some significant cap space this year. They need to upgrade their D and between the pipes. They also need 2 1-2 solid NHL wingers so they can put McD and Drai on different lines and still generate offense

What do you even do with the Oilers right now? The only players they have with a lot of value are the two players they can’t trade lol

Its so hard now for so many teams. If I were them I would just keep going in the same direction. It’s a team thing, they need to just improve across the board. Keep trying to work around the mines laid out by the cap and if they hit it out of the park a year, they could win.

If tarashenko comes back that further hampers their cap. No ones gona trade for a 7.5 mill winger with bum shoulder. Unless he’s done for good

Having two of the same style player, or three of the same style, is not the same as having 12. Most of the guys people complain at redundancy with throughout the years wouldn’t even play on the same line.

He's a really good player. He had trouble scoring this year because his hand was messed up. I wouldn't classify him as non-physical at all.

He’s played 169 NHL regular season games and for all that he’s been credited with 32 hits. It’s a funny stat subject to the whims of any given team’s bean counters but even so..... half those numbers are tallied by opponents bean counters and that’s still f***ing low. Panarin has those kind of numbers for the Rangers but Thomas is no Panarin when it comes to either skill or production.

the upside is there but the first 2 questions that need to be answer on thomas is 1) what will he cost? he might be available but I doubt the blues are going to just give him away. and 2) is he a center or a winger long term?
