They already have veteran defenseman who likely won’t be in the starting lineup. Brendan Smith, Joe Morrow PTO (who also isn’t any good), and plenty of younger guys on Hartford. They have no need to sign another bad veteran dman. It is most certainly not a “huge mistake” to not have him.

We should have bought out both Staal and Smith. We save cap space in total, and in practice defer a smaller amount to 21/22 and 22/23. Not much.

I think the fact that we are forced to resign all RFAs to bridge deals will end up costing us — a lot — more in 21/22 and 22/23 than those buy-outs would have costed us.

People were so scared for how our blueline would have looked. To be honest, I would have been perfectly content with:
Skjei-Trouba
Hajak-TDA
Rykov/Reunanen/Lindgren-Fox

And some minimum contract vet 7th D.
Maybe I am getting it wrong, but weren't you one of the biggest Shattenkirk critics and very loudly pushed for his buyout?
