Speculation: Roster Building Thread II (2022-23): The Puck is Prepared to be Mounted

People focus on Lafreniere and Kakko because of draft status, but what they've done to Chytil is the most egregious example of why this keeps happening to us.

They had a wide open spot in the lineup to promote him, he's earned it, and they went out and spent cap space we don't have on who I think is just a less talented player who does nothing 5v5.

If a guy is permanently on the third line, he's a third liner, and the results will show it. I don't care if he's Wayne Gretzky.

Lafreniere and Kakko might be boring and unconfident but they're not stupid. They see there's a ceiling. These guys know there's a noose around their necks.

Chytil has been the best 5v5 center on this team this season and it's not even close.

Outplaying 14mil in other center contracts.

no doubt Chytil should have been promoted last night. even a Chimp (GG) should have been able to tell he was working his ass off and one of the few players that could actually create thru the neutral zone with his speed.
To see Goodrow over him with a minute left (especially when Trocheck was taking the final faceoff and not Goodrow) was a classic example of what is wrong now.

I hope he realizes that unless he has a three point night tomorrow he will be out by friday night or saturday night the latest with this coach.

Please get on a roll with this lineup

Kreider - Zib - Vesey
Panarin - Chytil - Kakko
Laf - Trocheck - Kravtsov
Blais - Goodrow - Gauthier
 
I have wanted Laf with Trocheck all season. I dont know about Krav, but I hope he got some gym time in and good skates. He needs to make a positive impact. Doesn't have to score, just dont be a negative like he has been.

Chytil and Kakko should be kept together. They work well together along the boards and protecting the puck. They also can move up the ice. It is Laf that cant keep up with them.

Vesey is good with Kreider and Z. That line has done well. They haven't scored like we would hope, but they win their matchups. And Vesey is a good placeholder until we get Vatrano back or Garland. ;-)

remember when we were joking about it during preseason (kind of joking because we knew it would happen)? Went from 50/50 making the team to playing one of the most important spots on this team (1st line RW).

Chytil has done EVERYTHING the organization has asked of him. Went to Hartford for a brief stint, no pouting, went to work, and came back up after dominating at the time. He's been the 3C basically since then. He should have been at 2C when Strome was here, but nobody wanted to split him from Panarin (that's GG and Quinn).

Goes into the playoffs for the first time and begins that by centering their most consistent line the entire time. Scores big goals for the team. I was all in on getting him that 2C slot with Panarin and Kakko/Lafreniere. Once Trocheck got signed, you knew it was 3C duties again, but he didn't just stop there, he is even better now.

Let Trocheck play that 3rd line role for a while. I'd personally play him with Kreider over Laf, and swap those two, but that is another combo nobody wants to break up (Mika-Kreider). I think that those things have held the team back for too long.

The next thing that needs to break for this team is to end the time of some of these bottom 6 veterans. Blais doesn't PP or PK, so why is he playing when he is doing nothing? At least you can argue Carpenter is a PK guy (not a good one though). You cannot have Gauthier and Blais on the 4th and neither contribute on the PK. I'd rather keep Gauthier and just send Blais packing (wouldn't even mind putting on waivers). There are younger, faster players in Hartford. Rydahl should have made the team. Brodzinski could have as well. Trivigno should be someone explored too. The team needs to get faster and all three of those guys can skate.

There are a few big contracts obviously jamming this team up, both in cap, with it having been stagnant, and in promoting the younger players. I don't think that will be resolved this year nor next, but 24-25 I expect Kreider to be moved out or demoted and be mainly a PP specialist. Trouba can be moved 24-25 (without permission) as well but he will likely still be valuable to the team at 30 years old and the cap should have risen dramatically making him not such a burden for another two years. That is when this team will be truly transitioning to the Kids... Chytil and the others will be 25 and younger, Fox will be hitting his prime, Miller and Schneider should be maturing well, the Othmanns, Cuylles, and Grubbes will be filling in the middle and bottom sixes. Mika will be here for the duration, Panarin too (25-26). I think this year and next are going to be tough for those of us who want to see Laf, Kakko, Chytil, etc given primary roles, but I think 23-24 will start the transition. Once Panarin is off the books there will be plenty of room for a big signing, and some big names (29 year old McDavid being the biggest) are goingto start becoming available.
Last years playoff had my expectations up for this year, but I've come back to earth. I expect the Kids to steadily improve but I don't expect anything earth shattering this year.

Yeah, I think Laf-Trocheck can be a solid duo. I feel like they will mesh well. I hope Gallant gives them more than a game to see if they can develop chemistry.

I like the idea of laf and tro, and getting goodrow off that line is already a net positive.
I feel like gallant is realizing the vets are dragging this team down right now, instead of carrying the team like they did last season.
I think the next step has to be flip defensemen on the pp units and give the kids the big boy time since the first unit is stagnant.
CK can redirect trouba slapshots just as well as fox wrist shots.
 
Panarin is an extremely gifted offensive talent. But unless they make a trade soon to find a finisher who has elite hockey sense, they should trade him for a N/S player with a hard-nosed attitude. I hate to admit it, but he misses Strome. They had chemistry and it can’t be denied. That’s the problem with players like Strome (remember Nylander and Jagr). They’re worth more to YOUR team than anyone else.

The Rangers keep screwing with the chemistry of the club. I realize the cap and $ issues, but you can’t lose 4-5 guys that you just had a deep run with, and expect not to have repercussions. You cannot underestimate chemistry when trying to build a winning team and consistency. This is hurting them a lot right now.

If they win the Bedard/Fantilli lottery, there's not going to be enough ice time for three young dynamic centers, and if they're going to lose Zegras in two years for nothing, may as well get some help to retool on the fly and get back in the playoffs. Panarin waives to be back with his butt buddy as does Trouba with Vatrano.

I’m guessing Drury was looking at his team through rose colored glasses but signing Trocheck was not a good answer. Granted Centre depth was a glaring weak spot within the organization but your spot on Chytil should have been given that spot and Drury would have been better off bringing in a stopgap 3rd line Centre on a cheap 2 year deal.
