The question isnt if Kane is a still a good hockey player (he is), it's how much of a premium it will cost to acquire him.

To me its too much for the role he will be shoe-horned into on this roster

According to Clear Sight, the Rangers have 3 players (Mika, Bread and Fox) at the top of the Playmaker AND Quality Passer stat lists. Thats more players than any other team in the league (oh, and Kane isnt on either of them).

This team doesnt need anymore playmaking ability, especially one-dimensional playmakers.

They need more two-way depth up front for the lower lines and most importantly help on D if they want to go far in the playoffs.

Dont fall into the big-name, we will outscore anyone, our PP will be unstoppable crowd if we trade for him. Its short-sighted

If we get this year's version of him yeah, but the question is, is he just not giving a complete effort and will he be energized by a playoff run and return to form? That's the risk.

Maybe, but it’s been a pretty steady decline for him.

Some of that is definitely because of how bad Chicago is, but hes 34 and has played a ton of hockey. I also don’t want to enable Panarin to be dumber than he normally is.

Well of course games are won and lost on the ice but that lineup is a cup worthy lineup

Hfboards, where people come to die with assets in their caskets rather than go for it

How about going for it with players who aren’t bad?

I don’t think you’ll find too many people against moving Krav and a 1st for a player who can help. Kane isn’t that guy.

Kane is insanely underrated on here.
He has 4 goals this season. Results, immediate contributions, are the only reason for getting a rental. Sure he’ll probably turn it up a notch here, but he’s not going to be the Patty Kane of yore. That ship has sailed. Im not saying he sucks, I'm saying he doesn’t put us over the top, I don’t think it’s close. And Chicago’s ask probably starts with Krav and a 2023 1st and I’m betting it don’t stop there. I’d rather roll, the dice on Krav breaking out somewhat in the later part of the season and contributing in the playoffs (and then having him for subsequent seasons) and I think this is the wrong draft to trade a 1st. I’m not up for that Kane price/gamble and I hope NYR management isn’t either.

1) His cap space is more valuable than him. If we dump him now and replace him with rydahl that accrues an extra roughly $1.75mm in cap space for deadline which we need. That will out us at about $9mm in cap space for deadline which afford us Kane at 50%, Motte and a 6th dman
2) we have guys in hartford who we can call up for depth that are better than him in Rydahl and Carpenter. Cuylee is better too but i want him to have a full year down there

Kane also has a NMC and hes brought chicago 3 cups. Theyll place him where he wants to go and do so at a generous price for that reason. Kane for Krav and a 1st probably gets it done

St Louis had a full NMC, which he only waived for the Rangers.

Blais is making only $1.5 and is a pending free agent. He’s not a cap problem as the 13th forward for the rest of this season. I get the fans frustration with his lack of production, but there is no reason to trade him. There will be injuries, you want the organizational depth in April. They can self-rent him.
I still hold out hope that Blais gets his skating back and we see a real difference-maker. Maybe even this season.
I was right about Gauthier, so I’m sticking to my guns here.

No he's not.

Chychrun at $2.3M, is a steal. He's much better suited for modern hockey.... He can actually skate.... and hit the net.

Michael Roszival? He's a 2-3 right now with potential as a #1 defenseman
There are aspects to Chychrun that are tantalizing. One key to the next step for the offense is the D improving offensively and better o-zone organization/structure/ideas. The kids are all lefties and it seems Miller (lefty) is the only D that can help set them up for one timers. Panarin, Zib, Fox (even Trouba) are all righties - a crafty lefty D to help in the o-zone + continued growth from Miller (maybe Jones long term) should go a long way to balance the structure out and help unlock the kids.

The downside is obviously the prohibitive initial cost, Chychrun's injury concerns, and long term implications of giving up remaining trade ammo and cap situation.

The Vatrano trade is the template for what Drury should be on the lookout for. Hornqvist is another example. Florida will be looking to shed cap in order to ice a complete roster and possibly make a move at the deadline. He’s a good depth veteran winger who plays with an edge but he’s overpaid. Inexpensive depth.

Add a veteran forward who can play in the bottom 6 and a veteran defenseman who can play on the bottom pairing.

I’ll say this, for all the crap Carpenter got the fact that Drury has a veteran center in the AHL is a small victory for the organization come playoff time.

Hornqvist is out long term with his second concussion in a month.. It would not surprise me if he is on LTIR for the rest of the season.

If a real market never develops for him, and he ends up available on the cheap (ie: no 1st round picks or top prospects), I'd be interested in a guy like JVR. Can play all three forward positions. Has some post-season experience. And (the part that intrigues me), he's a local guy who might just find a bit left in the tank to make a push with his childhood team.

If Mika and Panarin play/produce to their capabilities at even-strength, there's yet another level to this team.

If Trocheck alone, starts turning some of those posts into goals, there's another level to this team.

Sky's the limit.... and the limit is the coaching staff. We will go as far as they allow.

If chytil plays at a .62 pace, which he is now, that is like a 52 pt player… which a 6 mil a year contract actually is pretty fair, maybe a slight overpayment.

Truthfully why would the the player not even ask for a 2x6 or 3x6 contract? He actually deserves it.

Those that think he will inly get 3m are crazy, especially if he keeps producing. And if he does magically sign for 3x4 he will definitely be getting over 6 if he keeps getting better.

So actually its probably in both the teams and players best interest to go long term now. The team hedges their bet that he will keep growing and producing,
And the player gets stability and doesnt have to worry about a concussion, injury or bad year derailing his pay.

For once i would like to see the rangers have some foresight instead of only worrying about the current season. We never have good players outplaying their contracts because we always pay too much for vets on their past play, thus screwing up our cap. And not having the ability to sign young players to good deals long term.

The short sightedness of this organization is awful.
He's not getting 3m long term, no one thinks that. Stop talking hyperboly. You want to sign him long term at 6m then please explain how it can happen in a reasonable way. In reality he's a 4.5m player.

The reality is that they will all most likely be bridged to buy time for the cba to bump and for some of the nmcs to change to mntcs. They don't have cap space to do what you are suggesting so it's pointless to argue.

Our better play and winning 7 out of 8, coincides with KAM picking it up offensively and being back to a really strong shutdown defender.

He's all over the ice. Who in the NHL has his skillset? Who in the NHL has ever had his skillset?
Hedman.

I said it quite awhile ago he has to opportunity to be hedman lite. He has the size, skating, and reach but needed the offense and confidence to come in.

If they cared about that they'd play Brodz with him.
You don't elevate an AHL player to top 9 simply bc you don't have an NHL player that can win faceoffs. That's ridiculous.

Your telling me that you wouldn't do anything to add a player who is a pending UFA, from a team that is clearly looking to sell; who is arguably the best American-born forward player of all time; someone who has revolutionized the game; who has someone in our locker room who would vouch for him as a teammate; who is a proven playoff performer.

Miss me with that. Give me TyJo.

Emily also compared acquiring Kane to the trade that brought Marty St. Louis to the rangers back in ‘14. That adding a proven winner and playoff performer could help put this team over the top. This is the line of thinking that has me concerned.

MSL cost us Callahan and two firsts. We don’t have anyone of Cally’s caliber heading to UFA and I don’t think Chicago would be looking for someone like that, but the two firsts was a too much then and would be way too much now for Kane. This Rangers team doesn’t need the offensive potential someone like MSL brought like the 13-14 team did. That Rangers team needed more skill. Skill isn’t an issue now. If anything, this 22-23 team would benefit most from a player like Callahan, the gritty, two-way player who can score some big goals in the playoffs. There’s another Ryan, playing in St. Louis that fits the bill. If the Blues sell I’m going after Ryan O’Reilly. Upcoming UFA, cup winner, proven playoff performer. If healthy I think he makes a bigger impact on this team than Kane, and likely costs around the same or less asset-wise. And the Blues owe us one for the Buch trade.

And most importantly and most notably, that cost of Callahan and two firsts did not win us a Cup, as expensive renting almost never does, and so should be avoided.

Giroux actually had a pulse on an awful Flyers team. He had 18 goals prior to the Florida trade. How will the Rangers use Kane? Is Gallant breaking up the first unit PP for Kane? The Rangers trade for Kane and they don't put him on the first PP, why acquire him? The Rangers won't promote Kakko or Lafreniere to the 1st unit.

The Rangers need another defenseman.

Do the Rangers need double retention for Kane so they can do other things? The double retention will only add to the cost of renting Kane. Is it worth it?

I’m only interested in Kane if he wants to come here and sign a 1 year cheap prove it deal a la Paul Kariya with the Avalanche.
