Here's your daily hfnyr PSA: Dallas has $20m+ in cap space and therefore will not need trade young assets for more space; berzaglova is a right d; staal has a no trade clause.

They have that cap space because sharp, hemsky and Hudler all coming off books. Do you think they're standing pat without a whole offensive line

We aren't getting Honka. We got our version. His name is Anthony DeAngelo. We aren't done. There are still moves that need to be made. As confident as I was that our opening night roster would look radically different (and it already will), I am also sure that there are multiple moves that still need to be made (aside from the obvious ones).

One thing that bothers me is if it is true that the Stepan deal was done before the roster freeze, why did Gorton not do something to protect Lindberg? Just seems odd.

Good point at that last paragraph. I know we all trying to be optimistic with JG but he's made some questionable moves since taking over

Nash, Niemi, and Lehtonen all only have one year left on their contracts. The problem for Dallas this year is they're currently committed to over $15M on three goalies.

I get that people are being cautious after y'all completely and hilariously overvalued Stepan (after trashing him all year), but there's some real undervaluing of Nash going on

I didn't look at the actual situation and this is just what I thought was a logical reason they didn't do the deal before the expansion draft, Coyotes would have then had to protect Stepan and maybe they didn't want to expose another F they planned on protecting, and I think the Rangers had just enough forwards exposed to meet the requirements for ED so if they traded Stepan and protected Lindberg they would have been one F short whom met the requirements. Or both scenarios.

Not 100% sure on this, but either one would make sense.

That was me, and Hintz was top-10 in goal scoring in the top tier league in Finland during the regular season as a 20 year old. He also led the league in playoff scoring. But keep telling us how uninformed we are. That's tough work you're doing.

Didn't call anyone uninformed, in fact I clearly admitted to being uninformed when it comes to Hintz.

I had not heard of him, so I wasn't sure if he was NHL ready.

Sounds like he might be. In fact, it sounds like Chicago probably wouldn't want to deal him for a UFA to be.

That's my main issue with dealing Nash. He is still an effective player but not quite worth his contract and is a UFA to be. I'm not really interested in the package a rental will likely receive.

Dallas having $20m in space is irrelevant. Dallas is a budget franchise. I'm sure they'd rather be paying a player to be on the roster than paying someone not to play for them.

I think they are buying out niemi instead of trading him and saving the young asset that would cost a lot more to replace.

Arizona would take him on for a pick instead or vegas would do it.

I still think a deal is there with Dallas to be made, I just don't see niemi being a part of it.

Kevin Allen of USA Today also believes that the Rangers don't want to pay Shattenkirk long-term. So add another one to the Rangers won't sign him basket.

Where the Rangers are getting a top-pairing RD is beyond me. So I hope they tear it down.

We are so weak down the middle now. A C has to come in.

Nash is 33, has 1 year left on his contract, and has scored less than 40 points each of the last 2 years. What do you think that's worth?

And this is how you run into Girardi and Staal contracts.

After Nash and maybe Hayes, he should be the next one to go.

I disagree. How you run into Staal and Girardi contracts is paying players who are clearly on the downside of their careers, with little talent, and lack of skating ability, who have also had terrible injuries or play a style of hockey that takes a toll on the Body.

Provided his source isn't Brooks.

Yup, I don't see how it happens either

Stepan was supposed to return a top RD according to people like Brooks. Didn't happen. Shattenkirk fits that bill, you're not getting a top RD without weakening the forwards

Smith isn't a top pairing D. DeAngelo is not a top pairing D. Bereglazov and Pionk are not top pairing D. We have a bunch of 2nd and 3rd pairing guys

Zucc is the kind of player you want to keep for a lot of reasons. He should retire a Ranger

There's reasons to trade him too but no one wants to hear them.

Re Dallas: replace honka or faska. Do they have the pieces in their system to step in that void? If they don't, they have to go ufa to plug in the hole and there goes their savings. It's why we cling to skjei, he's effective, cheap and climbing. Guys don't want to part with him for MacKinnon but Dallas will part with their same type of player for 1 year of Nash and a salary dump.

Again, the dump is negated by the free agent replacement. Sam Ganger for example. He took a 1 year prove it deal, think he is signing cheap or for 1 year? If Dallas grabs him, they probably triple faska's cap hit.

Nash with cap retained will bring in a nice piece from a team looking to get over the top. It's a question of timing.

As crazy as it sounds considering he carries at 5.7 mil cap hit I believe the "goal" is for Staal to be a third pair guy on this team next season. Ideally playing 2/3 or so of the games to keep him relatively fresh and healthy. It's looking more and more like we have the cap space and other D pieces to do that. Plus after next season Staal's No Movement Clause becomes a limited no trade I believe.

I believe we sign Shattenkirk and resign Brendan Smith.
Klein "retires" and goes to play in Europe.
Once we do Holden is traded.
I also believe they expect Bereglazov to play on this team next year.

McDonagh / Shattenkirk
Skeji / Smith
Staal / Bereglazov

Then in an ideal situation one of Deangelo, Pionk, Day or Graves shows they are capable and ready to play at an NHL level and makes the team as the 7th guy splitting time with Staal.

I also believe they will give Lias Andersson a serious look at making the team next year as well. While both Bereglazov and even more so Andersson are young both have played full professional seasons against men.

I'd give up a lot for a player like Draisaitl. McDonagh+Hayes enough? I know it's a pipe-dream.. Rangers having a #1 franchise center and all..

It comes down to... you need at least 1 top center to win a cup.. I don't care about regular season... I want this team built for the playoffs.

If that's the case, this really will be a transition year and they are looking at this as a 3/4 year plan. And if that's the case, let the Nash and Zucc trade talks begin.

Not overpaying for one in FA is a start. Not going after SK is also a sign they don't intend to be fully competitive this year. He's the easy way to improve the top-pairing and the PP in one swoop. It's the move that makes the most sense and they're guaranteed to sign him if they want him. It could just be the term though and not that they don't want to have a shot at the 'Cup. Maybe they have another plan to find a RHD/PPQB and still remain competitive , but like you said, who or how is beyond me.

I really hope all the buzz is true, I'd like to see them try something else for a change rather than just sign the FA that makes the most sense.

Should be a telling week ahead. We'll probably get some idea of what teams are talking to different free agents as we roll through to Saturday. Then we'll get a good idea of what exactly "rebuilding on the fly" means on Saturday afternoon.

I'd love to see the Rangers move Nash for Niemi, Hintz, and a pick, then take on Kruger to get DeBrincat or a couple picks. Those would be really shrewd cap moves and they still manage to add two players who fill immediate roster needs without having to go to free agency.

If Hintz and DeBrincat develop well over the next season, they could make guys like Miller or Zuccarello easier to move in order to address other positions, or they could become nice trade pieces themselves.

This is interesting. I hope it or something similar comes to fruition.
