The Girardi thing was an inevitability though. I mean, everyone knew something had to change defensively and he was the obvious candidate.

The Stepan move wasn't a necessity. I see it as a signal they want to change the dynamic a bit. The Girardi thing was just an obvious move that everyone saw coming.

I understand, but that doesn't change the fact that they are now committed to a fundamentally different team already – and Gorts sounds like he wants to do more. "More" could just be signing UFAs and/or trading draft picks for players, but personally my interpretation was that we'd see more roster turnover and asset collection...

Bonino is the type of guy you win with when he's being paid 3rd line center money. Not when he's being paid FA money.

Bern man ... that is just ... insane LOL ... like that would be the wildest offseason ever.

That's just this week. He'll have a bunch as the year goes on.. although Stepan is gone now so that takes away a lot of his proposals.

God dammit I just skimmed it and I wonder why I did. What the hell is that man? McDonagh, Nash and Skjei for Mackinnon and picks.. come on man.

I'm just not in love with the idea of signing more low tier players. It's time we put on our big boy pants and make a big move for someone who can change the dynamic of the team talent wise.

OK I get you want us to make a big move but unless Getzlaf,Crosby,Malkin,Toewes, NBackstrom...you get the point, become available all of a sudden, it doesn't matter how big our pants are, we aren't getting one of them.

Now just because you are not in love with getting a Bonino doesn't mean he's someone I said should come here to be our #1 center when that never ever came out of my mouth. Bonino if he came at a reasonabe price as I said would be a very nice addition and would be a nice boost for a middle group that right now is missing two pieces.

We need to take advantage best we can the UFA market and snag a few players and I'm betting Gorton will and he should. Now if Ryan Getzlaf suddenly becomes available, well I'd advise JG to possibly take a look at what it would take in acquiring him....lol

exactly! And to be fair I don't see Hayes as the #2 guy yet ... there's too many 2/3C's on this team, no 1s.

We really aren't going to get a 1C... they just don't become available very much Thornton, Seguin aside.

They do however, at least need to replace another 50+ P center to match what the offense did last season and then fix the defense..

You're right Crosby Malkin Toews etc are not available ... but that doesn't mean that next tier down isn't.

Let something sink in here. The total NHL experience for Rangers D that are true RHD is 39 games (of Klein does indeed retire).

Holden Is a lefty who can play the right. Same goes with Bear Gloves.

Other moves are coming.

and Smith can play the right side as well, but he's not a "RHD" either..

Screw it.

Bern. Aside from the fact that both proposals are just absolutely ridiculous and involve destroying the entire team for two players.. you then move the two best centers on your proposed team to wing.

The entire reason we need Mackinnon is because we now lack at a top line center. You trade the entire team for one and then move him to wing. You also move our second best center in Zibanjaed to wing for good measure.

If JT Miller is capable of playing first line center as you propose then we don't need to give up a truckload get the top line center anyway

You would let Bonino go for 250K?... You really can't want him that much then.

I play some harball. I do want him but I don't want to be the one to massively overpay him. He's on the books for 1.9 right now. He'd have some serious stones to think someone is going to pay 4.5 to 5.0 for him.

I'd hope to get him for less than 4 and I don't think JG will go past that either.

There are other less attractive options out there that were discussed...Hanzel and Gagne the other two I'd sniff around with. As I said last night, even if Jumbo Joe is not all that appealing to me. 37 year olds coming off major surgery for torn ACL and MCL's make me nervous...call me nuts...lol

Bonino is the type of guy you win with when he's being paid 3rd line center money. Not when he's being paid FA money.

So if no Bonino who IMO is the best UFA center available, what exactly is your plan to try and replace Stepan as the #2 center?

I keep saying this. There are NO #1A centers available that I am aware of. Do you know of any that are?

I mean there is no perfect solution as I said but this is the closes thing to being a satisfactory solution.

Besides, our main priority is fixing our back end. You fix that first and than you deal with the center position.

Everything I do this offeseason depends upon how the back end is addressed.

About trading Mcdonagh.. Mostly its a foolish idea (despite the haul he would bring back)..

but if the Rangers don't get him a meaningful partner, to me, we're simply wasting his overall talent, as we have the past few years, imagine how much better he could be with a competent RHD to team with...

If they're just going to put him with Staal (God forbid), or Deangelo (who is nowhere near ready for that).....

You're right Crosby Malkin Toews etc are not available ... but that doesn't mean that next tier down isn't.

And who is this next tier that you are saying is available after the uber elite Crosby,Malkin,Getlzaf....etc?

I'm assuming you are going to say Duchene or even McKinnon. We talked about this last night. Sakic is asking for way way too much for either of them. Who else besides those two are supposedly available that I am unaware of?

How bout this, who do you know is available that we can get that won't cost us an arm and a leg at the Center spot better than Nick Bonino who would just cost us salary cap space which we have a ton of?

Harnett speculating on twitter the Rangers may move Miller back to center..

Do not like. However I can see why they would try it he's come a long way since moving to the wing with his game overall and with added confidence I think he's more than capable of being a 2C but I think he's much more effective on the wing.

There's no rebuild here. They're keeping the vast majority of the core. They've moved ONE core player and in doing so possibly picked up a core player. Unless something drastic changes in the next couple months, this is a retooling.

Yup. They saw an opportunity to get a young center for Brass, and did it. They saw a chance to get a quality RHD with major upside as well as a top ten pick to get a quality top 6 center prospect for Stepan, and also did it.

The more I think about it, I think they are targeting Shattenkirk, despite Brooks' comments to the contrary.

Shattenkirk - $45 million for 7 years
Smith - $16.8 million for 4 years

Staal for Bjugstad

Gilmour & Tambellini for Kruger and two 2nd round picks

Sign Kinkaid

Kreider/Zib/Buch
Miller/Hayes/Zucc
Vesey/Bjugstad/Nash
Grabner/Kruger/Fast

McDonagh/Shattenkirk
Skjei/Smith
Holden/DeAngelo
Bereglazov

If this coach could be trusted, DeAngelo and Bereglazov could be allowed to develop, and then DeAngelo could be paired with Smith, and Holden could eventually be dealt for a pick.

If Vesey and Nash could carry Stepan, they could do the same for Bjugstad.

Defense would be worlds better. Forwards might not, unless Zib, Buch, Hayes and Vesey take a step forward like Kreider and Miller have the past few years. Bjugstad is a gamble, but maybe the Rangers catch lightning in a bottle. And Staal would be gone. Florida could be one of the few places he might waive his NMC to go.
