That's a nice idea, it would prevent us needing to sign Shattenkirk:

McDonagh-Trouba
Skjei-DeAngelo
Staal-Bereglazov
Holden

but... I mean how in god's name are we trading for hanafin?

They wouldn't move him for Duchene because of the lack of term on the deal. So would they trade him for a young forward who is cost controlled?

I think a player like Trouba is much closer to what our blueline needs than Shattenkirk right now.

If NYR can't manage to swing some sort of deal with an excess winger like Nash, then so be it. But I'd prefer we give younger, cost controlled guys like Bereglazov and DeAngelo a chance than give Shatt a huge contract.

Concerned that we have excess cap space? Fine. Give somebody a nice 1 year contract. But let's not make another mistake on defense just because we have cap space open. Shattenkirk in my view really does not fill a need for this franchise at all.

We need a reliable two-way RHD, and either a star center or a good 3rd line pivot to fill the gap while our new top prospect develops for that role.

I feel this way too. I'm open to Shattenkirk, but with the right terms... Realistically, if we're giving out a $6-7M contract, I'd rather pony up some forward assets to Winnipeg for Trouba and then hand Trouba an extra $1M/year solely because of the fact that he's 23... In a year when McDonagh has a year left on his deal, you can promote Skjei and trouba to top pairing duties and move McDonagh for a huge haul... the 2018-19 season's top-4 defense would look like this:

Skjei-Trouba
Graves/Trade-DeAngelo

Another reason to keep Smith over Shattenkirk. He's a very versatile D and will cost less $ and term. He can play anywhere on that D corps, and it gives you sufficient d depth in the event on an injury. Also already knows this system... if you can get him for a Stralman contract, you have to do it

Defense is completely fixed.

McD-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Smith
Staal-DeAngelo

Miller, perhaps? I wouldn't mind move Hayes but then we're going to be very short on centermen...

What other forward would they want? We have nothing in the farm on forward at the moment that would interest a team that's ready to start contending

Dont like Shattenkirk!!!

if we get him we'd be stuck with 2 dmen we can't rely on to PK in a pinch
imagine mcdonagh takes a penalty

Were talking have to double shift staal skjei or smith on the pk

Buchnevich.

I wish something would leak that would extinguish the idea in my head that Marleau and Thorton are going to go all Selanne and Kariya and take cheap 1 year deals to come to NY. While Shattenkirk takes a short term, high hit deal and they all try and win a cup in NY.

That opens the door for Tavares or just nice, free cap space. I'm cool with the idea of stop gaps until zibanjed and #7OA can handle more responsibility.

Shattenkirk is a reliable two way RD. I really don't think we should be trading anyone else. We just opened a huge whole in our forwards and have really addressed the backend yet. The Step trade only makes sense if we sign Shattenkirk.

We had a good forward group. We chose to shake it up. We could fix our trash defense. There is no clear answer to filling Stepan's hole at the moment. There is an obvious answer to address the dumpster fire defense we've been watching since 2015. I think we should fix what we can and hope the forwards step it up (pun intended).

Shattenkirk would be a big plus for the PP and offense, but his defense is suspect, and the long-term deal is what concerns me.

Re-sign Smith and it doesn't seem so bad.

Gorts has options. McD or Skjei on their off-side? Re-sign Smith. Shattenkirk? Trade?

McD - Holden/Bereglazov/FA (Still don't want Holden on the top pairing)
Skjei - Smith
Staal - DeAngelo

Would Nash retained+Holden fetch any worthwhile RD?

Trade Nash @ 50% + 7+ Holden for 3 + Nich + Honka

Hope Patrick falls to 3, or possibly deal with NJ if they're serious about trading down for Makar, take Nico

Slot Honka into our empty D slot

Sign Dadonov
Resign Ziba
Resign Fast

McD-Honka
Skjei- Deangelo
Staal-Bereglazov

Long time lurker first time poster. Any chance Gorton packages 7 and 21 together to move up if Patrick drops? Helps the Rangers center issues immensely.

Keep all the cap space after resigning RFAs. Draft with #7 and #21. Suck all year. Win the lottery. Take Dahlin. Offersheet McDavid 7yx14m.

Sometimes it's fun to dream.

We have a hole at center. This team still has one more top 9 and one more top 6 winger than it really needs, if management expects Vesey and Buchnevich to develop. I see a pivot issue, not a forwards issue.

And I highly doubt they plan on using Miller at center full time, before that gets brought up.

On Shatt- as Caps fans if they think he is dependable 2-ways. Guy was worse than Yandle defensively in the playoffs.

Id rather swing one of the firsts for a package including a first next year. Let's start accumulating a surplus of picks for a change. I think we get a middle 6 forward in UFA as a stop gap. We are a roll 4 type of team, not as top heavy.

Anything is possible. The problem is there are guys at 7 who could be every bit as good as Patrick if they give them a little time. So the cost would have to be weighed against the timeline. If they think it's worth it to get a guy who could play next season, then I could see it happening.

I don't know where this idea that Shattenkirk has suspect defense came from.

I thought his advanced stats showed he was a big time positive defender and shot suppressor.

if we could turn miller into Trouba that would be highway robbery with the value of d right now. I would be willing to give up 2 wingers for Trouba and wouldnt think twice. It would also pretty much complete our defensive transformation. Im all for it given there are decent wingers to sign to be near term gaps. IE Dadanov and Williams, etc we get hopefully a good forward at 7th ov, Nash for a first at next years deadline, we draft 2 forwards next year in the first round at the draft
