I agree with RGY in the previous thread that Thornton would be a good stop gap option at C if Stepan is being moved. Ideally you want to have a more permanent long term replacement, but it could work for a year, and if not, then both him and Nash could be moved at the trade deadline.

Thornton may only want a 1 year deal knowing Nash has only 1 remaining.

If the team is bad then you have two amazing trade deadline chips.

Problem is this team will be good enough not to be sellers.

Well, Staal is here for stay I suppose. After the way he said he's healthier and stronger than ever last September, I really have no hopes of him improving in the off season.

Been saying this for 3 and a half months. I love it when a plan comes together

ehh steps for faulk maybe 2 months

Sign Thornton for 1 year to coincide with Nash's 1 year left. Vegas takes Holden. Klein retires.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Zuccarello
Miller-Hayes-Grabner
Nash-Thornton-Buchnevich
Vesey-Lindberg-Fast

McDonagh-Faulk
Skjei-Shattenkirk
Staal-Bereglazov/Pionk/Graves/cheap ufa

Lundqvist
Raanta

*runs off to play NHL 17*

Yea this was laughable. He looked that way for the first 15 games and then fell off a cliff

Why would them being good be a problem? This team is still in contendeing mode. The goal should be to be good.

Just realized entire right side could end up being three players that haven't been discussed in the last 3 roster building threads

Smith is not re-signed (yet?)
Holden is exposed to LV, also a trade chip, if Staal moved somehow, could also be 3LD
Bereglazov is only speculated to be penciled into the 3RD spot, plus AV hates young D.
Girardi is going to be bought out.
Klein might be retiring, traded, or taken, however unlikely.
Shattekirk signing is far from guaranteed.
Pionk is not ready.

How much do you guys think Thornton will have left? He's 37 and now he's coming off an MCL AND ACL tear... 1 year deals are never a risk.. but..

Thornton won't happen so there is no point in talking about it

He will re-sign in San Jose. But if he doesn't he isn't signing here

He's coming off a torn ACL at 39.

Not sure if that fits for the Rangers but he can do a 35+ deal.

Speed is an issue but the Rangers prefer speed on the wings, and have had success with slower centers.

IMO Stepan to MIN/CAR/MTL are good fits for those teams.

I'll miss Step but the team needs a shake up, and other teams will pay a premium for a RH Top Six center.

The bigger question is what is happening with Graves now? Not to relegate him because of Staal but Graves could be a trade chip all the more with Staal not being bought out. I mean, management wasn't ever intending on buying out Staal but still.

Just putting the numbers up for a Minnesota trade takedown and I have separately posed: stepan and Koivu are almost a wash, $6.5m and $6.75m respectively. Staal is $5.7m vs dumba's $2.55m.

50% retain on Staal is $2.85. The cap swap would be exactly $100k in difference. Add a mid level pick or exempt player for taking Staal.

Koivu has an NMC but I don't see an NTC.

As a reply on the potential contacts between Gorton and Shatty. Sure you can get a word through that there is interest. But no matter if our radio guy was his youth coach or he trains with teammembers or NYR during the summer -- Gorts and Shatty cannot discuss numbers. I would be surprised if Gorts today knew what Shattys demands will be. It's a complete no go to discuss numbers with an agent. The agent wouldn't get involved. What is Shatty going to do, pass a not to a player on our team saying 6x6 on it?

Just saying -- I don't think it can be a forgone conclusion that Gorts can be certain to get Shatty on July 1 unless he really is prepared to break the bank and match anything. JMHO.

Why is this relevant -- if we are dealing Step now to make room for Shatty, it don't quite add up. If we traded Step when we could discuss with Shatty, it's another thing.

Koivu's NMC prevents him from being traded without waiving, same as Parise and Suter.

Rangers went from having No RHD (figuratively) to not having a RHD (literally).
Girardi - bought out
Klein - retiring?
Clenening - not being tendered

Not smart, Dumba needs a new contract after this year, and G's buyout will cost against the cap.

Stepan for Dumba, Kunin and 1st from a desperate GM helps the Rangers.

I'll switch the first to their Russian

I was driving the Jumbo Joe buss for a while, was thinking like why not, but when the POs started I just changed my mind. He is too slow, it's too much of a speed game out there. Maybe maybe he could help in a 4th line LW plus PP role, but that's about it. Don't even buy that, and that was before his injury.
