Right now today, everyone is fine. I think most people knew the playoffs this year was going to be a stretch. This year gets a hall pass.Yeah, of course there is a difference between what the fans want and what someone who is trying to save their job might want.
But I was under the impression that Gorton is the one steering the direction of the ship and that he was full speed ahead for the multi-year rebuild. Has that changed with JD being brought on board? Or is somehow Gorton or JD's jobs getting hot because they aren't winning already? Is Dolan feeling that pressure? All that seems unlikely.
Obviously I don't know the people you know, so I'm not claiming to have that perspective. But I'm just speculating, what official could be feeling this pressure right now? Are the Rangers not still super profitable, and did not Dolan himself sign off on this rebuild? Did he change his mind? I mean, maybe the PR VPs or someone else might be on the block for not moving enough tickets, but the people in charge of the personnel decisions for the on-ice team cannot possibly be feeling job security-related pressure to ice a playoff contender at this point, can they?
A year from now, if the Rangers are in the exact same place then what? Will we be talking about selling off Strome and Buchnevich and whatever we can get for Staal and Smith? How far have the kids progressed? And what about Zibanejad's next contract (cha ching) Yes we will have more money to spend but how do we spend it?
