If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

Well we'll, it seems like the ship is being abandoned. There's something rotten in Denmark, not going to point the finger, but I'm sure you know where I stand, because I've been saying so for at least 5 years.

It's looking like it's going to be a season that doesn't end well, and it ain't Mitch's fault. ROR laid enough cards on the table to be able to see that light.

Cowan better be good

You don’t get it, if you don’t overpay for 34, 16, 88, 91, 44 you can afford better players ghan McMann, Laughton, Lorentz, and Holmberg………
what about if you pay kampf, Reeves, jarnkrok, banning less money? can you afford better bottom 6 players then? what about if you trade 1st+ prospects can you get a good player with retained salary then? come on man use some critical thinking here

Only untouchables in my books are Knies, Nylander and Tanev. Tanev wont last at the end of his contract but for now worth keeping since the d-corps is so shallow. And keep Stolarz since he's got to be among the best bargain pick goalies ever. Totally worth keeping around for $2.5M.

Rest of players are tradeable or FA farewells.

What cap issues were keeping Edmonton from matching a Holloway offer sheet?
Probably nothing at FA time last year. Oilers just didnt want him.

Skimming Oilers contracts, Holloway signed for dirt cheap on Blues in August 2024. $4.5M for 2 yrs. Only $2.25M/yr.

Henrique, Jeff Skinner, Arvidsson all signed more costly contracts a month before at $3-4M/yr each. So looks like Holloway was pushed out as Oilers preferred signing 10 year vets. It was a mad rush because all 3 of these guys were signed on July 1.

This is the point I'm trying to make. Teams have historically walked away from offer sheets if they don't like the player at a number, they don't walk away just because they can't afford the player.
Yup.

Big loss for Oilers. Holloway is a bargain. But they preferred going the route the Leafs do too. Fill out the ranks with vets trending down in that $3-5M range hoping their experience pans out or they rebound to former glory.

Mcleod would be a perfect C for Nylander.

Add some much needed speed, power and youth to the middle 6.

Excellent foot speed, good two-way ability, good playmaker, youth

If we go the cap dump route, Coyle is your guy

Nice to see some others mentioning McLeod, he would be perfect. Just not sure Buffalo is moving him.

Sillinger is another young center with some upside who I think can finally take that next step playing alongside Nylander. Woll would definitely need to be apart of the deal going to Columbus.

A Rielly for Coleman move along with a Cowan + for Miller trade would be really solid IMO.

Middle six forward group -

Coleman - Sillinger - Nylander
McMann - Tavares - Raddysh

Screw Tavares if he's trying to max out again here. He was overpaid last time when he was a 8-9 million dollar player at best for the production he brought and got paid like he was a 100 point 50 goal scorer. Wasn't even a Selke level defender either. If he wants to max out again at 35 tell him to go somewhere else. Since he was overpaid by like 2-3 mil last contract he can accept to sign for 4-5 mil since he's asking for around 7 mil according to some.

What do you think he’s looking for?

He is best center in free agency.

Most reports I've seen were about 7 million and even as high as 8. He might be the best C on the market but we shouldn't be paying that for him after giving him 11 million on his last deal when he was a 80 point player.

A line needs to be drawn with these contract negotiations, especially with this core. It's time for the scouting staff to earn their pay and start letting management know who we should be targeting in trades that won't cost too much or some under the radar FAs/waiver pick ups that would help the team even if they aren't producing 80+ points.

I would like to see Leafs sign about 4 centers and let them fight it out.

I think Marchand is just being a huge troll and will end up staying in Florida too.
I don't think Ekblad is staying out of those three though, I see Tre being aggressive for him.

I get what you're saying and Knies is currently my favourite player... but don't even make the comparison.

We'd be f***ed offensively without a guy like Nylander... with Marner going. We'll probably trade and add some guys this off season but Nylander was one of the best goal scorers last season.

We need them both.

I think as Leaf fans we really need to stop comparing guys on our team. The guys that are there... let's f***ing cheer them on... especially when they want to stay.
Yeah I get it, I'm just seeing posts like put Knies on the market if he wants too much but for the first time in forever we've produced our own big power forward who will play on the top line. No way in hell should we lose a player like this because no other teams are giving up players like this

If you ask other fans around the league who stands out the most to the them on the leafs it's usually Knies. Everybody wants a guy like Knies more than a Marner or Nylander.

Just as I thought, Friedman just said that the Leafs wanted Marchment bad and that they were disappointed they couldn't get him

They must have made a serious offer, thinking they could get it done.

Friedman also said that he thinks theres a chance the leafs trade a defenseman for a forward

Lmao we couldn't offer more than a 4th?
