Roster Building/Team Building/Future Trade/Drafting thread.

If this team once again fails to proceed very far in the playoffs, what would you want them to do?

-Re-sign Tavares at 3x7M. Anything more, bye-bye.
-Trade Nylander. I would say trade Marner, but he has no value because he is out of contract. A team like SEA, CHI or Utah(with money, and desperate to make a splash)will give up assets for him. Leafs need ELC assets/picks that are easy on the cap. CHI has some nice D prospects(Levshunov, Rinzel, Vlasic). UTah and SEA picks.
- Re-sign Marner at 11M. If he wants more, let him go.
-Keep Matthews. Listen to offers, though.
-Re-sign Knies...something like 8x 7.5- 7.75M. If he wants more, sign him to a bridge deal. Listen to offers.
- Keep Berube

I would re-sign JT if he is willing take a team friendly deal.

Let Marner walk and try to add guys like Bennett and Marchand instead for a similar combined AAV.

Try to move Rielly.

Let Marner, Tavares walk
Sign Bennett $8.25M x 6 years
Sign Roslovic $4.5M x 4 years
Sign Marchand $6M x 3 years
Sign Fabbro/Perbix $3.5M x 3 years
Re-sign Knies $8M x 5 years
Trade Rielly for DeBrusk
Robertson/Holmberg/Jarnkrok/picks for Crouse (50%)

Knies(8)-Matthews(13.25)-Roslovic(4.5)
DeBrusk(5.5)-Bennett(8.25)-Nylander(11.5)
Marchand(6)-Laughton(1.5)-Cowan(0.93)
Crouse(2.15)-Domi(3.75)-McMann(1.35)
/Lorentz(0.85)

McCabe(4.51)-Tanev(4.5)
OEL(3.5)-Fabbro(3.5)
Benoit(1.35)-Carlo(3.49)
/Myers(0.85)

Stolarz(2.5)
Woll(3.66)
I love the Fabbro idea.
He’d bring some puck movement and offence from the back end and inject a lil youth while he’s at it.
Roslovic makes a lot of sense because he should be able to hang on the top line.

Actually, we can trade Marner's negotiating rights at the least. The NMC is over at season end. OR hope for a sign and trade deal with him to recoup something.

I think I can see the reasoning behind Marner not waiving as, Raant helps us get past Florida, then the Leafs beat Marners' Carolina with the player he was dealt for being a big factor. That would be soul crushing for a Toronto boy.

Bennett making over 8M is pretty insane and could very well be in line to beat Clarksons contract from years ago. But that's what it would take for sure. Domi is just gone magically as well. And there's no way you get Crouse at 50% for a bunch of crap.

Fabbro would be a sneaky good pick-up. But I think the problem with the D core here is largely the same... we need more firepower. Not easily fixed though so perhaps you double down on good defensive players.

so much of trading is timing and opportunity.
It’s crazy to think that Mitch’s value *was* the best playoff performing right winger in the league.

If we walk from Marner and JT.
UFA targets:
Centers:
Bennett
Frederick

Wingers: (at least 3)
Benn
Marchand
Boeser
Jeannot
Olofsson

Defense:
Maybe Fabbro/Perbix? D is really weak this UFA season
We need to ask Rielly to waive and get someone with fresh legs that can man PP1

As for JT, needs to be a lower Domi like contract offer, not a 6-7mil offer if he wants another go.

What is your opinion on what happens if (likely when) Bennett re-ups with Florida?

That kind of makes the C market drop into a pit, unfortunately.

I keep seeing the same d-core in some of these depth charts. That's the one thing no one is talking about, and they need to gut.

Slow, quite untalented, and not the youngest.

It likely won't be touched, but that's why Treliving should be shown the door.

Matthews and Nylander are under contract and with return to health by Matthews their 2 goals scorers.

I'm sure a healthy Matthews can score from feeds by any good winger making less than $10mm a year.

Tavares and marner are UFA and only one is likely to take a discount. One is going to be looking for twice as much as the other.

Knies is a must re-sign, and replaces one of the outgoing Core 4, for close to half the amount. This signing will enable the team to shop in free agency, for a different type of player.

Berube deserves another shot at it.
Berube implemented his changes, and has moved the needle, but ...

At this point Rielly has to be traded or bought out, let marner walk and if JT wants more then 3x5 he needs to be moved on from as well. Jarnkrok, kampf, holmberg all need to be moved on from as well.

Four key Toronto Maple Leafs are set to hit free agency after the conclusion of a season that ended in yet another early-round playoff loss.

Star forwards Mitch Marner and John Tavares can be unrestricted free agents come July 1, power winger Matthew Knies is eligible for restricted free agency and team president Brendan Shanahan's contract is also up.

But in the immediate aftermath of another Game 7 loss — a 6-1 drubbing by the Florida Panthers on Sunday that marked the Maple Leafs core's eighth straight winner-take-all defeat — many eyes trained onto Marner, the hometown winger whose contract status has been a topic of conversation throughout the season.

In Monday's edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said there will be "lots of interest" in Marner on the open market.

He added that the fit to return to the Maple Leafs may not be so simple.

"As we sit here right now on Sunday night with the Leafs losing Game 7, there's a lot of pain, there's a lot of anger, there's a lot of heartbreak, there's a lot of emotion and I could see how it's gonna be very hard for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Mitch Marner to see eye to eye on a deal unless one side really changes their bargaining position," Friedman said.

......................

"I've heard some people say, 'Oh Marner's hurt his value, Marner's value won't be the same.' I'll say this: I think there's a lot of teams out there who really believe he'll be a better player outside of Toronto. That he'll go away, it'll be quieter and he will thrive," Friedman said.

"That doesn't mean that all those teams are gonna offer him what he might want at the top, but I think there's gonna be a lot of interest in him."

Meanwhile, with Shanahan in limbo, Friedman pointed to Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment CEO Keith Pelley as one of the people who could determine the future of the team.

"Keith Pelley has some decisions to make. I think (head coach Craig) Berube is going to have a big voice about the players," Friedman said.

You can have one or two supporting talents but you cant have five (Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Rielly) pushed into the top spots on your team.

The current leafs are no different than the Kessel/Phaneuf era teams. Only difference is there are more of them. Kessel and Phaneuf went on to find success soon after leaving the leafs on teams where they were supporting true alpha talent. Phaneuf become the middle pairing D with Karlsson & Methot as the top pairing, and Kessel with Crosby & Malkin as the top centers.

Keep only Matthews & Nylander for next season while removing Tavares, Marner and Rielly.

Pelley needs to be brave here.

But I kind of doubt that he has the hockey acumen to realize that Treliving and Berube are also part of the issue.

If we can move on from Rielly,Marner Jarnkrok, Kampf, resign Tavares for 5x3 Bennett + Ehlers+ Provorov+ Frederic we will be a much better team.

Ehlers. Matthews. Nylander
Knies. Bennett. Domi
Frederic. Tavares. Cowan
Lorentz Laughton. Mcmann

McCabe. Tanev
Provorov. Carlo

I don’t think the Leafs will manage to sign that many high profile free agents at once. Usually never happens.

Seems likely to stay in the States and head to Minny. He's going to be 34 years old too and had a pretty bad playoff performance. But maybe?

Seems a reasonable take ... and Tavares re-signing for a reasonable 2-3 year deal, at a rate you pay for a very good 3rd. line center.

Filling out the line-up is going to be interesting if they cannot land another middle 6 center.

But as has been discussed Ehlers should be a prime target, but he probably stays in Winnipeg?

Well, in the wake of whatever the f*** that was last night...

Here is our yearlong roster

I've been doing this the past few years, but something tweaked with the Leafs media team this year. They're definitely less open under Treliving, but this year their PR team was asleep. As accurate as I could get.
