The high hit after the initial was the right call. Just dumb play.

The Hughes hit was a penalty but that looks from Hughes a similar thing we’ve seen with Slaf in Montreal and some other young players coming in unprepared for the level of physicality in the NHL. So often that exact type of approach by Colton and Hughes in a puck race to a corner leads to both players skating/bumping into each other. Pretty easy to see that Colton thought was coming there. Not sure what Hughes was doing but it did end up being boarding.

Good on the refs calling it a major initially so they can review it

Right call too. The boarding was a result of Hughes turning away from the hit (and yes, I'd be pissed if it was against my guy). The crosscheck was pure stupidity and deserved a major.

The hit was pretty bad and dangerous imo. Hughes didn’t turn much at all it’s pretty much numbers the whole way and Colton really put all his weight into it.

As someone else said, the hit should have probably been the major and the “crosscheck” moreso getting the stick up should have been the minor imo.

Either way the penalty quantity was appropriate.

Seems Hughes tried to prep for a reversal back up the LW side, while Colton expected him to keep straight and engage shoulder to shoulder. An unfortunate result, but Luke probably won’t leave his body completely unbraced next time

Shoulder to shoulder, hit on Hughes wasn't that bad. He got the major for the cross check.

Yes, the shoulder of the lower back and hip. Regardless, it's interference with dangerous contact into the board. Probably gets more than 2 if he didn't follow it up with more stupidity.

They weren't going to give him two majors. Calls as a whole were fair. Probably gets a game or two.

i feel like hughes needs to be ready for that contact, almost looked like he was starting to brace for it too. just can't assume everyone's gonna go halfsies on a stick checking play there, some guys don't play the game that way and are gonna look for contact

no excuse for that crosscheck though, that's just stupidity and a well deserved ejection
