I love Roy's game around the boards and in transition , he really knows how to protect his puck and make smart area passes after his first touch, that one play he made to spring a two on one yesterday is the type of plays that are going to make him successful as a pro , not worried about his offensive game but if he keeps making smart plays in all 3 zones he can be a legit 2 way winger with a scoring touch , now we need to see him do it in preseason when the speed / tempo goes up a notch. Since footspeed has always been an issue , the IQ is great tho I think he can overcome it

Mailloux is feast or famine. Has all the offensive tools you could ever want, and his wrist shot is at an elite level already. Good size and speed, he is a force out there when he’s “on.” Defensively, he is below average. He has improved, but that will have to be the focus of his development moving forward. You can teach defense though, and playing time will only help - you can’t teach experience.
First off, I pretty much agree with all your observations on the players.

I will focus on Mailloux here. Looking at him with the puck yesterday, I would often mistake him as a winger. He is one case where I wonder if he could be better suited at that position, given his shortcomings on defense. He is big, skate well, good shot. I know we often come with this kind of comments with some of our Ds, but in Mailloux's case, I really could see it.

Maillot really showed his play as the tourney went
This last game he was superior to Reinbacher
By quite a margin which surprised me
They are different player. Maillloux is an offe sive Dman. Reinbacher an all-round. Mailloux had better offensive instinct, he has a great shot.
But I found Reinbacher better in his own zone and for the first pass.
Mailloux is also 2 years older. This is enormous. And, I believe that Mailloux has a good NHL career in front of him. However, Reinbacher will become a dominant one. You will need it when you need a goal and when you need to protect the score.

Also Roy is Toffoli 2.0
I've been thinking the same, skilled not fast but knows where to be in all zones - that can compensate a lot for lack of foot speed and obviously has in his case so far. I would not bet against him being a solid NHLer. Would love to see another Roy in a Habs jersey

Trudeau is really interesting.. leadership wise I mean
He is directing players pre face off and during shifts themselves
He suggested to Reinbacher they should switch sides RIGHT before the ref dropped the puck to help with their handedness to better receive one timer passes since they were in the O zone

And mid shift he alerts his partner To catch the other team on a line change, which we ended up doing

I can see why he has the C
Another guy I would not bet against having a solid NHL career. Unlike say, Farrell or Kidney

I wasn't happy when he was hired, and he worries me pretty frequently, but he seems to be doing well with the prospects.

Development of prospects is less in the hands of the AHL coach. HuGo (Molson) have invested significantly in resources (Hockey Development / Analytics / Sports Science) that less is dependant on the AHL coach for player development. Houle can focus on implementing systems that correspond to the NHL team requirements.

Habs prospects have a better understanding of what it will take to make the NHL. Strength and compete level is #1 - above all, and if you look at the NHL roster you quickly realise that making the team will require considerable improvements from every player that attended the rookie showcase. It was also evident that Trudeau, Simoneau and Mysak greatly benefitted from playing pro last year.

I disagree as an AHL coach imo can have a major impact on development depending on how much time they get to work with said prospect.

While the development staff can help prospects for sure, they likely won't have as much direct contact with your average prospect.

Granted I don't know what new things are being used in today's game and I admit that I never really bought into analytics in sports at least to the degree that at least in MLB has taken over. Not that it doesn't have it's place as all information should be included when making tough choices but I guess I'm too old school.

Sorry I have disagree
Maillot was pretty good on his own zone carries puck well out of zone
Considering he's only played in Jr
And Rein has played with in professional men's league
Maillot is very impressive very impressive
I don't see much dominance with Rein
He didn't even dominate raw junior players

Offensively? Sure.
Defensively? Not even close.
Saw the game maillot had no trouble bringing puck out and was good passing in his zone
He will only get better in both ends of ice
His offensive ability is way above Rein

Farrell seems smart and skilled but incapable of implicating himself in the man's game. Many such cases, the jump to adult hockey isn't smooth. A season in the AHL will get him up to speed on the physical demands of pro hockey. We can see then if he has it or not. So I don't think we can count on him or consider penciling him in anywhere.

I don't like these neither-here-nor-there prospects of whom we suddenly have too many: Mesar, Farrell, Mysak, Kidney, etc. Hope to see some clear delineation between some of these guys and some news of progress from a few of them at least.

He is small and doesnt have a quality shot. It gonna be hard for him. Unless he is a king of playmaker. Kidney is in the same mold but 2 years youngers and kidney is 6ft. This a different than 5ft 9 in farell
