Mesar was selected because of his nationality (matching Slaf's). That was a mistake when Kulich was still on the board and the higher ranked prospect with size.

Much better showing for Mailloux. Still lots of work to do in his own zone. But he's got some serious tools including speed. I would like to see at least 2 x years in Laval. No need to rush him.

We draft bad players because they are french canadian or slovakian, we're not drafting good players because they are russian, what should we do with austrians?

Agreed, he went right around where he was projected to go. I think the organization drafted him with more of a direct speed game in mind where he could attack defenders and collapse defences on the rush. He is too perimeter and east/west right now but that can absolutely be changed/fixed and writing him off is just a childish hot take.
Do you see him being able to make the adjustment in Laval? Fans aren't wrong for wanting draft picks to show stuff out of the gate. We are constantly having to come up with reasons why they aren't. If it's a purely physical thing fine but that may never change. I'm not very high on a number of our forwards who are all in the small but skilled category. It would be nice to draft more players who are already fixed to begin with. :sarcasm:

I sort of got the impression that Hughes was going all in on Slovak friends as well, but Kulich was a polarizing player last year. Maybe the habs took the other pole.

Oh, I'm not writing him off at all. I just don't see top 4 potential but he may very well be a solid 3rd pairing player. Average skating and slightly undersized for a dman are huge limitations and make rising any higher in the lineup very difficult especially with no plus traits even if he is solid all around. There is no doubt that he has NHL potential but I think that it is very unlikely to happen in Montreal at least not in a long term scenario.

I think he has the potential to be a more solid defender but in terms of his upside/downside from 5th to 7th D I agree.
Every time I see Trudeau he stands out to me. With the puck at least. But I think you’re right on his ceiling. I don’t think he’s quite special enough. Definitely still a win if he’s an NHLer. Even just a placeholder for a year or two. Always good to do that internally

I hope they don’t bring him up.
Yeah I’ve seen that movie before. Too many times lol.

Whoever told you that never saw Mesar play.

Mesars game is skating, hands and playmaking. He also has a quick release that he can get off in traffic.

Everyone gets mad when we don't draft skill and then we draft skill and get mad about that too. Mesar was a fine pick for the late first round and writing a kid off in one year is just so stupid.

Chill out.

And to add, Kulich also hit a wall a few times during the season, which is normal. But because he's not a Habs prospect, people only look at his overall stats. If he was a Habs prospect and he was followed game-by-game, people would be questioning if he was the right pick whenever he hit dry spells.

Kulich would have been a good pick. But I don't think it means taking Mesar was a mistake.

Mesar will need to have a coach who makes him realize he’s north-south, not @Bombshell11 ’s dangler par excellence. If he does accept this, he will make the show. It’s all about understanding what role you will have in the show.
I think Newhook/Byron will be perfect models for him.

I just think there's a hint of lack of self awareness and resilience in his attitude, and that could be a deciding factor in his development.

Realistically speaking our top 6 moving forward already has:

Suzuki - 24
Caufield - 22
Slaf - 19
Dach - 22
Newhook - 22

So we really have spots for 1 maybe 2 top 6 moving forward which should be a top end talent for us to really be in position to compete.

A lot of these kids will be trade bait. Roy - Farrell - Beck - Mysak - Heineman - Mesar either make the team as a 3rd line (Mysak, Beck, Roy possibly) or will be trade baits for that missing top 6.
Interesting thoughts by Marco d’Amico on the subject of the Habs’ organizational needs. We picked a D in a forward heavy draft this summer so why not buck the trend again by picking a forward in next year’s D-heavy draft:

Not sure how D-heavy draft is next year....for far it's about half od the top 10 and not even sure if one will make it top 2.

Having said that, we are full at every position. Every single one.
We do have a lot of the same and what we need is not more of that same kind of prospect.

Next draft I would trying to hit homerun at every pick, no matter the position, even if I would end up with nothing, I would take giant dumb swing.

You can look at this video, basicly Mesar is the same player from last year but without the confidence. Like some one else said, he needs to be more self aware. His positioning and feet movement without the puck were bad before, they're as bad now if not worst.

I think he still has the offensive talent to excel in the AHL and learn from the pros, i dont think the OHL is the place he'll learn waht he needs to learn, specially not on a team that is run like a boys scout club. And he'll be closer to his buddy, so its a win - win - win situation

Writing the kid off? No.

But how long would you say is a reasonable timeline to find out which of Mesar and Kulich was the better pick?

I was basing it on earlier draft prognostications as well as our forum discussions in June where most were saying that 2024 was a D-heavy draft. Of course, we all know how often those lists will change by the time we near the 2024 draft.

Looking at BobbyMac’s early rankings, he has 5 Ds in his top 10. Maybe there’ll be more on his future lists, who knows: Get To Know Bob McKenzie’s Top-16 2024 Draft Prospects

Agreed that while it’s too soon to pass a definite judgement on him, he doesn’t project as someone aware that he needs to step up if he doesn’t want to go back to CHL

Of course it will change but as of now, it wouldn't be off the board to take a forward either.

So I assume we'll be seeing all of our top guys tomorrow after the day off. I wonder if there will be any line juggling because some of those groups just didn't work.

This board is really insufferable right now. Christ. I've never seen the whining about prospects at the level it's at right now.
Having an opinion on a player is not whining by the way. Fans are completely entitled to like or dislike a player or type of player. It's kind of normal that in a rebuild that you'd much prefer to see better results than otherwise.
