I only watched the 3rd but it was interesting how often Topping's name was called - not all in a good manner (late penalty and then got crushed by an Avs skater) but he was in on a lot of action. I wonder what we have in him. Scouting reports questioned his skating and overall skill level.

Overall the Sharks have a few prospects who are intriguing.

Hatakka had some good sequences.

Kind of envious of the Colorado rookie team zone entry. Lots of skating and quick passes with touch. The Sharks system and skill players didn't seem at that level. But, there is some more size and speed and that seemed to make the dump and chase more effective (in this small snapshot).

I hate reading Sommer’s assessments of our prospects. It’s always like, “this guy was good he didn’t try anything fancy, real simple, nice hits” — he feels like a dinosaur to me. I want to hear him compliment a player’s creativity, hands, etc. not how little they did and thereby didn’t make as many mistakes. I hate it.

Sommer coached Guolla in the minors. Guolla is 48 years old now. Sommer is most certainly not on the cutting edge of coaching strategies.

One of his quotes was something like "if Ibragimov and Robins are fighting for a 50/50 puck Ibragimov wins that battle 8 out of 10 times." Who f***ing cares when Robins is 10x better than Ibragimov at everything else?

Yea like I get that hustle is important and a big part of being a professional hockey player, but you can't win with just a team full of Michael Haleys.

Base on the transcription from Sheng, there was no comparison. So no need to shit on Ibragimov

Of Ibragimov: “I thought this was his best game in the tournament. He’s getting it. Strong, big body, heavy on pucks, a north-south kind of guy. He’ll go in and get pucks for a guy like a Tristen [Robins].

“Put him in a corner. Eight out of 10 times, he’s coming out with the puck. He’s got a good engine on him too.”

But Sommer is the most Winningest coach in AHL history! Ignore that his Win-Loss record actually isn't that great.

I know there all these calls to get rid of DW, but how Sommer is still in charge of the AHL team and development of young players is beyond me.

I was following Sheng’s Twitter and he tweeted that Weatherby is walking around and is fine. I don’t recall hearing about him getting injured…did I miss something? He was on the ice and assisted Eklund’s ENG yesterday.

Sharks rarely have guys play all three games (so they can see all the guys on the roster play at least one game).

Could be the designated sitee.

The rookie team did look like clones of Goodrow, Sorensen, and Melker. Though, they did lose . . . so point stands. ;)

My own completely arbitrary, mostly made up, ceilings for the players this week:

Eklund- first line winger
Gushchin- second line winger
Ozzy- second/ third line winger
Robins- third line center
Raska- fourth line winger
Coe- fourth line winger
Cardwell- not even data, gonna say third line winger
McCue- really not enough data- AHL center/winger possibly
Reedy- fourth line winger/center
Lord Jasper Weatherbody I- fourth line center
Ibragimov- AHL winger/ callup
Hamaliuk- AHL winger

Merkley- 2nd pairing
Kniazev- 2nd pairing
Hatakka- 3rd pairing
Laroque- early, AHL callup

Gaudreau- 1B starting goaltender / backup goaltender
Emond- AHL backup

I was hoping McCue would be an x-factor who came out of the OHL layoff with top 6 athleticism. But, it didn't look that way.

The reality is outside of the top 2-3 prospects that is what those players need to do to become NHL players. Those guys lack the talent to make the NHL based on creativity and skill alone, they need to lock down the simple stuff. Hell, even the top-end prospect need to learn to do the simple stuff before they can ever become NHL regulars.

Great assessment!

Eklund has centre potential however unlikely to be 1C so I see his ceiling at a really good 2C (for me 2C > 1W)
Merkley's ceiling is a 3rd pairing PP specialist
Kniazev & Hatakka have a similar ceiling as 2nd pairing
