I mean, this is the playoffs. Aside from the nonsense Alberta teams, that means closer checking, higher pressure, fewer grade A opportunities for everyone, every game.

Every team is good enough to win every night. Every team. Every night.

"The team isn't trying" takes are just silly. It's a chess match, one of the most physical and grueling chess matches on the planet. It's going to take every bit of physical and mental fortitude to win every single game against another team that will be exerting every bit of their own physical and mental fortitude. Ebbs and flows are natural and expected.

It's also a sixty minute game, and giving up on your team when it's 1-0 in the third is just silly. But of course y'all know that, and that's what the GDT is for, I guess. Just don't get too caught up in it :)

Rod's words:

We’re not gonna get away with that - not playing through 2 periods and expect to win a game especially this time of year against that team.

Give credit to the Rangers. They played a perfect road game in the first period. Took the lead, gave the Canes (and their fans) nothing to be happy about after 20.

It's certainly better than our road approach of "God, let's hold this lead before we take 7 penalties and lose 5-1"

If we do we're probably toast. I know we did not play our best until the third, what I don't know is if the Rangers played their best.

All stars, except Aho in the 3rd, for both teams were unusually quiet last night.

Don't know if anyone knows this but we did out hit the Rangers last night 40-31. So, yes, bring it on NY.
As far as hits, it seemed like we were going out of our way in the first two periods to get a body on them, almost awkwardly so. Wonder if that was part of the plan but did it take it us away from just doing what we do best. Could be completely wrong, but thought this as I was watching last night.

Boston was not a typical M1 vs. WC1 matchup. Beating the Bruins in particular had to mean something to this group. It's not a reach to think that there was a 2 period hangover from that series.

Agreed. Boston was one of the hottest teams in the 2nd half of the season especially the final month. They had climbed within 3 pts of TBL, and won 7 of their last 10 games. Had the season kept going I have little doubt they would have taken the 3rd spot in the Atlantic. Defeating Boston was a big deal.

Pick and choose quotes if you want. He also credited the Rangers for taking the team out of the game they wanted to play for those first two periods. If you're being honest, quote that part too.

The point is that ebbs and flows are part of the game. No person on earth is at their absolute best every single moment. You just have to hope that you're at your best more often than they are.

The flip side of that is due to the Canes not bringing an appropriate effort through 2, NY was allowed to play a near perfect 2 periods. We saw how that changed drastically in the 3rd when they rose to the occasion. I'm not disagreeing with your point of ebbs and flows, simply suggesting that the "try harder " take isn't necessarily silly when the coach himself said the same thing.

There were two women up in our section who left with about 4 minutes to go. A couple of Canes fans were like, "Where are you going? It's not over for us yet...." They said they were parked 2 miles away and had a long walk. Probably a surprising end of their walk when they turned on their radio.

Also, I believe there was a bit of mental hangover from the Bruins series. Much of what happened in the first two periods last night was the result of us playing into the Rangers hands (game plan). Our passes were not crisp, we often passed one too many times, and our dump and chase where we have a high intensity forecheck was more like dump and scramble.

I didn't see anything like a lack of effort. It felt more like we were not executing....maybe we were overthinking things, but a lot of it had to do with how the Rangers were playing us and our lack of adjustment. The Svech/Tro/Necas line late in the game was very dangerous and very fast. It contributed mightily to our hard charging 3rd period.

Putting a real playmaker back on the Aho line opening things up for him and Jarvis was big as well. Hopefully those two moves help create space on the first line, give the Tro line some net front going forward, and just give us too much for the Rangers to deal with going forward this series.

And, frankly, even with Svech's improvement on defense, Turbo is very good in that regard and makes that line stronger defensively for specific match ups.

I think we as fans tend to overestimate "effort" and underestimate things like matchup and momentum and fatigue and the other team. I mean, sometimes effort is one of those factors, but in the playoffs I think it's the difference between "super effort" and "super extreme effort".

My take on last night is thank you Raanta for keeping it close long enough for the Canes to find some momentum in the offensive zone. Good on Rod for making an adjustment - wasn't the board complaining about that in the last series. I'm interested to see if he goes with that tomorrow.

Mostly, I'm glad we won in overtime, otherwise it would have felt like two losses.

On another note, other than one mouthy asswipe in our section, who thanks to his wife didn't get asked to leave, we had no problems at all with the few visiting fans.

Of course.

You don't get more nsync than that unless your Justin Timberlake.

Sorry. The dad joke was just sitting right there.

Or maybe "effort" is more a summation of the problems especially when people are commenting in the moment as is the case with a GDT.

Agree. I'm a little surprised that fans on other boards are saying we should've easily gotten through Boston. Uh no, Boston has playoff pedigree and like someone else said they were one of if not the hottest teams in the NHL since Jan 1st in regards to points and wins. They were never going to be an easy opponent and anyone who thinks they were does not know what they're talking about.

Not discounting the Rangers but I think Boston would have been the toughest team to beat in these playoffs besides Tampa Bay (not sold on Panthers yet)...if they had gotten through Carolina.

I don't think the Rangers will be as difficult as Boston. Again, not discounting NY; they nearly beat us last night.

If we didn't have home ice in that series we probably don't win the series, unless we had eeked one out on the road.

I’m not sure how frequently this occurred, but what I noticed is the Rangers did very little to pressure 200 feet, instead preferring to stack up at the blueline. Because of this there were very few carry-ins and a lot of dump and chase…and the chase didn’t generate a lot of zone time (Staal’s line being somewhat of an exception). Because of this, Trocheck’s line with Domi and TT was less effective…neither wing could regain possession.

Replacing them with Svech and Necas (ironically) seemed to do the trick, as they used their speed to get in and size to challenge the clears. That allowed Trocheck’s line to generate a cycle that is the Achilles heel of the Ranger’s defense.

What’s not clear to me was how Aho’s line was affected…I don’t have clear memories of how things were clicking before and after the line shuffle.

Anyway, just something I took note of during the game, not sure how universally true it was throughout.
