Ron MacLean Sucks

Hahaha I like Ron and his classic take on the game. I also like the Canadian music he endorses and has on Hockey Night in CANADA.

I definitely don’t want hockey to go the American way and trying so hard to sell it to young folks that they present them game with sheer arrogance and what’s “cool” today.

He’s not super exciting but I’ll keep him and the cbc crew if the other choice is having obnoxious hosts and ex players yapping pure rhetoric filled click bait.

I guess I’m an old man that likes old school.

The nhl will never ever compete much more in North American popularity and I’m ok with that.

I can take or leave him. What's really scary is who will replace him, might be some 30 year old idiot whose main concern is getting followers on Instagram.

Ron McLean is so PC it is sickening. For example, on last night's broadcast, he couldn't even say, the Edmonton Eskimos, or even say, the team that was then the Eskimos. As if just saying the word Eskimos was some type of racist pseudo-sin. No wonder he was so fast to throw long-time college Don Cherry under the bus.

Yeah it's wild he didn't stand up for his Xenophobic and Racist buddy. It's sad when that happens.
He through Don under the bus hard. If your friend f***s up you don't need to double down on his screw up, but you don't join the pile on. If you join the pile on, that isn't your friend. Ron owes his fame and career to his partnership with Don.

Ron is a coward and a snake.

Eskimo is considered racist term by the Inuit, hence why the team changed their name to Elks.

"Hard"? If saying your friend said something bad is "throwing them under the bus", lord. I would WANT my friends to tell me that I've done something bad or that I should think about what I said.

It's crazy how soft a guy like Cherry is that he can't even take that level of criticism. Rock 'em Sock 'em indeed.

In the immediate aftermath of Don's firing I remember Ron making a smarmy speech on the broadcast about it. I don't even disagree with shit canning Cherry. If Strombo or some faceless Rogers suit said the exact same thing on the air I wouldn't have had a problem with Ron just standing there and hosting the panel next intermission.

Ron chose to be a corporate mouth piece in that moment. His association with Don gave his bosses cover.

I hope if you ever screw up that your friends are just as loyal to you as Ron was to Don.

I hope so too. If I keep repeating the same things and keep getting in trouble for them over decades, I wouldn't expect my friends to just keep standing there being loyal to me. At a certain point it isn't worth it any longer and you get tired of having to defend your asshole buddy.

So Ron is pc because he's respecting what a community didn't want a team to be called and so he doesn't say it as it's not a term considered racist by the Indigenous peoples in those parts that derogatory term was used. I find it interesting that the blokes that are triggered by this most are never from the actual communities. It's like when someone tells me "I don't mean to be racist when I say this..." For anything related to black lives when talking to me, chances are it's followed by something insanely stupid coming from their mouths next.

This entire thread is showing it's true colors for some that feel Don Cherry was thrown under the bus for being a racist and xenophobe for years while Ron would try to change the topic to keep the broadcast going as per their producer's direction.

And in your case, I have not forgotten the tweet you posted in another thread alluding to racism, I get the sense I know where your intentions lie and I'm more shocked a moderator allows someone to keep posting given that.

First if I ever say racist or xenophobic shit for years and then finally get called out, it was a long time coming and I have no leg to stand on for how shitty of a human I'm being because in Don's case, he didn't just ride off into the sunset of old Caucasian racists that were found out and now hide from all media. He leaned harder into his hate as "I didn't do anything wrong" type of bs and his podcasts and other bs didn't really help anyone endear him to any sort of misunderstanding.

As for Ron, he had a choice. If he also quit it alludes to him being an enabler of the behavior and agreeing with it and siding with his friend or he speaks out on it because now ratings don't matter and his pal went too far and the producers and show runners had enough. In the end Ron also answers to people above him and he can carry on his career and atone for the fact that he should have said more before vs just trying to change the topic to get Don off his usual xenophobic rants that needed someone to moderate him.

The real fault is producers and companies allowed Don to get away with it for years because of ratings and Ron had to keep the show moving as a moderator on the air being directed to do so by a producer.

I don't particularly care about Ron but I don't think he's this betrayer that most paint him to be.

I have zero issues with betraying a friend that is a trash human being. Don deserved 100% of the backlash he got because he said shit that earned it.

Don Cherry is a punk, f*** him

I mean, it's not even a hypothetical discussion. We've literally tried the younger, hyped up version of hosting and everyone hated it and we're happy they went back to Ron. It's what we want.

He'll host through the next HNIC contract wherever that goes and eventually retire on his own terms. You're in the minority, not close, if you don't like that. Straight facts.

So you think racism and xenophobia works like that huh?

I don't even know why I'm shocked.
Here's what I do know:

That if your definition of racism and xenophobia includes people kissing each other on live TV, that maybe your definitions of racism and xenophobia aren't ones that I care about.
