Good post, I appreciate the actual lay out of your thought process. RNH's production will go up. He was on a 50 point pace last year through an injury riddled season despite playing 2nd fiddle to Draisaitl and McDavid for the year. His biggest issue this year has been poor shooting luck, and poor play from line mates. Pouliot has played horrible and has been his most common linemate, and his RW has been a revolving door of rookies in Puljujarvi (when he was struggling early in the year) and Slepyshev, and role-players in Kassian/Pitlick. He's now on a line with Maroon and Eberle and that line looks great. They've been a scoring threat every night since being reunited and if Eberle could hit the damn net with all his high quality chances and Maroon could get some puck luck (has like 3 or 4 posts in the last few games) then RNH's production would have already taken off. I still think he'll score around 50 points when the seasons all said and done (assuming he's healthy). His play away from the puck and in puck battles has been outstanding.

It's from all of the years of arguing Stastny's value, and how much his production fluctuated depending on how dangerous his wingers were. He'd always elevate guys, but he couldn't put the puck in the net for them as well. Stastny was also asked to play against more difficult competition during that time too.

Stastny made 6.6M, and we were fine with him most years. He was a touch overpaid, but not enough for us to trade him for Bozak + 2nd lol.

RNH makes 6M, and is way younger with more potential, so it's easy to see. That and MacK's chemistry with RNH is probably why more Avs fans have come around to being ok with RNH for Barrie.

If you judge RNH by his PPG, you are doing it wrong. Very wrong.
its not his ppg. It's that he has seen it drop for 2 straight years. He's a good player that's not getting points like he should. But it's worrying that he hasn't developed offensively very well since being drafted. I expect him to get 50ish pts but, if he wants to be worth his contract he's got to product a bit more. Hopefully he can get it going. I do realize he's the oilers best defensive player(forward) on most nights, so that helps take flack off of him. Still, I think he's not valuable enough to gett leddy or hamonic from the isles. Boychuck is someone the oilers don't want, and calvin de haan will probably be an underpayment. I don't see a trade to be made.

Nyi and oilers no longer make good trading partners. Oilers took the hit on the Hall trade and nyi fans want them to take a similar hit on a nuge deal. OuR top 4 out larsson, klefbom, Sekera and Russell may not be the best in the league but it us far from being the worst.

Nurse at 5 is developind and 6 are players getting moved in and out till Davidson is back.

RNH is a solid 3C, bottom end 2C and is paid like a top end 2C bottom end 1C. You won't get Hamonic for him even if they had the same salary. RNH did not look good last night and is on a 40 point pace. 6 mill for 4 years will skew his value and hurt the return.

His ppg really didn't drop that much last year when you consider that he was constantly injured, came down with a bad flu, and was playing 2nd and 3rd line C for the first time in his career. His drop in production this year can easily be explained by poor puck luck (mainly shooting %) and poor play from his line mates. The league has changed a lot. 50+ points is elite 2nd line numbers bordering on 1st line. As for the players mentioned, I really have no interest in any of them. Leddy is good, but he's a lefty and isn't much of a PP QB. Hamonic is redundant after the Larsson trade, and again is no PP QB. Boychuk's contract is one I'm very thankful to not have on our hands.

I agree with your last point. I don't see a trade to be made here, but its not because the Islanders are shutting down the Oilers, its because there's no reason for the Oilers to have any interest in trading RNH to the Islanders.

I'd be open to that type of trade, but not 100% comfortable trading RNH right now. The team is doing well and a lot of it is due to centre depth. I think maybe this could be revisited in the summer depending on how Caggiula plays for the remainder of the year. If he can prove himself capable of a good 3C, and Draisaitl can prove he can be the two-way centre that Nuge is, then I'd certainly be willing to listen.

Solid basis for an argument.

Isle have nothing that might be available that would entice me to trade rnh there.

The oilers will probably go with McDavid rnh and drai down the middle until the cap forces a change.

Hilarious now RNH is a 3rd liner. If that's the case the Islanders have Tavares and all 4th liners behind him as he's better than every forward on the Islanders besides JT

1) The rumour was sketchy from this summer but it was either that the Islanders would only take Hall for Hamonic, OR, they wanted Chiarelli to add to Hall. Why would they trade him now for an underperforming RNH?

2) I really just can't see Edmonton making a big move for a dman this year. Their young guys are looking good, and right now they're in the best shape of any team in the NHL going into the expansion draft. Chiarelli make might some small deadline moves (Iginla?) this year, but I imagine he waits until after the expansion draft to finalize his cup contending roster.

unfortunately for you guys, it'll probably be another Hall for Larsson type of deal.

uh, no

We wouldn't be the desperate team this time. We're on top of the division. It's the Isles that would be the instigators of this deal out of necessity. We're not throwing away RNH for Strome+ just to save cap space we don't even need. Draisaitl has been very inconsistent this year. We have a lot to lose in trading RNH for lesser pieces and not much to gain. The only way it makes sense is if we're getting a bonefide top 4 D with some offense.

At any rate, I think this Eklund idea belongs with other Eklund ideas. The Isles would not be as desperate today as we were over the summer. I know their team is off, but they have time to put it together without drastic measures. If he wanted to seem smart he should have said the Isles were after Hanzal, then Strome + makes some sense

Nuge is playing 17 to 20 minutes a night--he is not playing 3rd line minutes. He is mostly playing against the other teams top line and players and getting double shifted. He is being used to shelter Leon D and McJesus in many sitautions

Cizikas and Hamonic. Edm gets a 3rd line center and top4 defensemen in return who both are 2-3 years older than RNH. Works with the cap aswell.

Islanders have "NOTHING" of interest to the Oilers BUT Hamonic, and if reports where true that Garth Snow turned down Taylor Hall for Travis Hamonic swap (what an idiot ) then there is no way RNH gets you Hamonic either......if there was a Hall for Hamonic deal on the table then Snow needs his head examined. Just makes the struggles they are going thru now more entertaining.

Adding Cizikas to the deal would be a win win for the Oil. 3rd line center locked up at a reasonable cap hit of 3.3mil and not to mention Hamonic is a steal of a deal @3.85mil. would fit in perfectly with other cost affect guys already locked up in Klefbom and Larsson. The Oilers blueline would be cost controlled for the next 3-4 years. I would also think Mark Fayne would have to be added to the deal as there would be no room for him on the blueline, plus getting rid of his salary would be a godsend.

C - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 6mil (5 years remaining)
D - Mark Fayne 3.6mil (2 years remaining)

FOR

C - Cizikas 3.4mil (5 years remaining)
D - Hamonic 3.8mil (4 years remaining)

NEW ROSTER:
Lucic - McDavid - Puljujarvi
Maroon - Draisaitl - Eberle
Caggiula - Cizikas - Pouliot
Pitlick - Letestu - Kassian
Ex. Hendricks/Slepyshev

Klefbom - Larsson
Sekera - Hamonic
Nurse - Russell
Ex. Gryba

Talbot
Gustavsson

Now I don't want to move RNH, but it probably makes the overall "team" better similar to the move of Taylor Hall. I also think RNH would flourish in the smaller Eastern Conference. Again if reports where true that Hall for Hamonic was turned down by the Islanders, I don't see this going anywhere. UNLESS there is more value from a Center then a Left Winger, (RNH vs Hall)

EDIT: Forgot to add, Eklund is a KNOB, No way this is true, but it was fun dissecting it.

True, because he is a vet, not because he is a 1C/2C.

Any interest the Oilers had in Hamonic evaporated the day they traded for Larsson, who in my opinion is a better fit for the Oilers then Hamonic. They need a RHD with a cannon who can produce points from the back end.

I'm sure the Isles would love to add a player of RNH's type but at this time the Oilers are playing well and likely have no interest in moving RNH.

Parroting the same thing over and over doesn't make it anymore true. Show me a stat aside from a slow start this season in terms of production that proves RNH is a 3C. Unless of course you also think Toews is a 3C because of his slow start.

If one of the best (if not the best) even strength wingers in the game in Taylor Hall fetched Larsson then what would RNH get? Oh boy

Luckily we won't have to find out because he's not available, while Hall was openly available in the summer. If someone wants RNH they can overpay because we don't have any reason to trade him right now.

In times like this I wait for literally anybody else except Eklund to give credence to the rumor. Eklund's had like 12 failed rumors involving the Isles so far this season.

It's Eklund so take it with a grain of salt, By all accounts Snow is looking for a RW to play on Tavares wing they already have Ladd as a LW and RNH is a Center/LW don't see Nuge as a fit with the Islanders just don't.

I think it's more likely the other way around (Nugent-Hopkins won't be traded for Hamonic), but I guess the end result is the same.

Considering Edmonton was allegedly willing to give up hall you're probably wrong

And Snow once again proved how inept he is by not taking that offer and running with it.

I do wonder what's happened to that train of thought Oilers fans were subjected to even as late as this summer- "You suck LOL You need to lose a trade to be better!11!!". In that case, they weren't even "hockey trade" proposals like Hall for Larsson/Hamonic; it was straight-up garbage and/or picks for our best players.

Just a teensy bit curious no one is trotting that one out for the Isles, who are now 29th with a bullet and in danger of missing the playoffs for the 7th time in ten years.

Yeah, that was before we had Larsson. We were dealing from a position of weakness then, we wouldn't be now (not that this has any validity).

RNH despite his lower than hoped for production is easily our 2nd best forward. He isn't being moved.

Completely agree. It's also before we signed Kris Russell who's played admirably in the #4 spot. Not to mention Nurse has also improved upon last season.
