How is it that on one hand Dubas overpays then on another he's not willing to sign Rielly over a NMC?
It can't be the case that he gives in to players and at the same time doesn't. Rielly is our best defenceman why on earth would anyone have any issues giving him a retirement contract at a team friendly AAV with a NMC? It would be agreed upon in a heart beat.
Even his comparable at the time of this "rumor" was somewhat Parayko and he has a NTC for every year of his contract.
What is most likely true is this nice AAV deal with a NMC simply doesn't exist. So far seems like something made up just to make Leafs management look like villains.

The Marleau and Zaitsev contracts are the very definition of incompetence and bad contracts.

What the hell are you going on about? He didn't sign Rielly to the contract he has now....the one that walked him to FA. Campbell is almost 30 and was never a starter.
Try again. Your takes are lacking in everything.
Clearly your not very competent… Just because Dubas wasn’t the GM who signed Rielly to his current contract doesn’t mean he can’t walk him straight to free agency.
When your blue line is questionable to begin with, Dubas should have either re-signed Rielly before training camp or dealt him. Now we risk loosing him for absolutely nothing, just like many players over the past few years.

I agree that D men don't grow on trees but what is Rielly? An Elite skater that can skate the puck out of trouble and is solid at zone exits... Solid 1 on 1 d man because of his skating..
He is not a penalty killer, he is not a plus player on the power play and he is less than stellar at dealing with odd man rushes... Brodie is a tremendous partner for him as he excels at dealing with odd man rushes or dealing with high danger chances... things Rielly is not great at.
Is that worth the massive deal he will command or do we have Sandin pick up the PP piece and find a cheaper FA defender that can do a bit of everything?... I don't think it is carved in stone that Rielly stays.

Kerfoot likely goes (3.5 m)...also have Kessel's 1.2 m off the books.

Shanahan needs to be fired too in that case. He does nothing. The only 1 who I wouldn't fire immediately is Keefe. Let the new GM decide his fate.

Gotta say, this coming offseason is gonna be a nail biter. Rielly and Campbell are crucial pieces for us, both UFAs, and both are gonna need MAJOR raises. Sandin and Lily both RFAs needing small raises. Cap space will still be very, very tight.
Kinda pissed at Dubas for giving Mrazek 3 years, $3.8 mil AAV, and Ritchie 2 years, $2.5 mil AAV. Two players that I just don’t think are going to bring much value for us, and that $6.3 mil in cap space could cost us one or two MUCH more important players in Rielly/Campbell. Not to mention acquiring McCann just to keep Seattle from taking Kerfoot - include Kerfoot’s salary and that $9.8 mil for pretty minimal value in Kerfoot/Mrazek/Ritchie.

Rielly is not the kind of D-man you sign for 9M+
He seems more like a forward playing D, isn't physical at all and always screws his D partner because somehow Rielly always ends up leading the rush and gets caught out of position. I've never seen a D man that goes to the opposing teams corners in my life, and it's not a good thing. He cheats way too much.
For 9M+ you want a bonafide #1 two-way D man. Like Seth Jones. Rielly is not Seth Jones, he's more like a slightly higher IQ Jake Gardiner.
I have 0 issues letting Rielly walk/trading him if we can get another TJ Brodie kind of d-man. The team will be better for it

yeah, hard to tell right now, but with the way the global economy is trending (i.e. inflation before inevitable crash), I'm quite bullish on 2.5-3 million. That means that I'd try to lock in Rielly at 8.5M X 6 now with a partial no-movement clause. Realistically, he's gone though. Someone is going to pay him $10M this offseason
